srnr HOUSING."
Application liled March 20, 1926. Serial No. 9&287.
lViththe above and other obiects.;in-view,.
the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through my patented disappearing step Patent Number 1,542,113 illustrating the manner in which the improvement is attached thereto and used in conjunction therewith.
Figure 2 is a perspective of the housing or cover.
Figure 3 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective of an additional modification with parts broken away and illustrating the construction thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the step part, 11 the riser part and 12 the pivot bolt for the step upon an appropriate portion of a motor vehicle illustrating telescopic rod 13 and hanger 1 1 positioned beneath the motor vehicle floor boards 15 and in turn associated with the vehicle door 16; all of the above being the identical subject matter of my patent as issued Jan. 16, 1925 patent number 1,542,113.
The invention resides in the provision of various methods of housing the step part 10 and riser part 11 when folded. in the position as clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing to prevent the accumulation of errtraneous matter upon the outer surface thereof whereby the said step, as completed, may be extended outwardly upon the opening of the vehicle door 16 and free from deposits of extraneous matter thereon. The housing consists of end plates 1? having apertures 18 arranged within the lower side edges thereof and adapted to be secured to the forked brace members 18 forming part of my patented structure as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing while the top and rear side edges of the end plates 17 forming a continuous curved portion 19 and having secured thereto a corresponding curved portion formed upon the inner side of a cover plate 20, the loweredge thereof falling short of the respective lengths of the end plates 17 where by such lower edge will rest upon the upper side edges of the forked brace members 18.
The upper and forward edges of the cover" plater2O having a plurality of transversely disposed cutout portions 21 provided therein for the reception of the hangers 14; and a rod 22 fitted within the upper end of the telescopic rod 13. As will be readily seen and understood from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing'the said housing is intended tobe rigidly secured and remain in one position while the step part 10 and riser part 11 may freely swing upon their common pivots 12.
In Figure 3 of the drawing I have illustrated a modified form of the invention contemplating the provision of rectangularshaped end plates 17 also providing a row of apertures 18 within the lower edges thereof for securement upon the forked brace members 18 while the upper and rear side edges of the end plates 17 have a top cover plate 20 and a rear cover plate 20* while the forward edge of the top cover plate 20 has a multiplicity of cutout portions 21 therein for the reception of the hangers 14. and rod 22.
In Figure 4; of the drawing I have illustrated another and additional modification of the invention consisting of a frame like structure providing downwardly extending apertured ears 18 upon the lower ends of the end frames for securement upon the forked. brace members 18 in a similar manner to that of the association of the end plates 17 and 17 respectively; the forward edge of the housing as illustrated in Figure t of the drawing being a length of wire 20 bent upon itself at appropriate points in the length thereof to correspond with the cutout portions 21 and 21 in Figures and 3 respectively while the upper side, rear side and ends of the structure being closed by coverings 21 preferably formed and constructed of Water proof material, such as canvas, and having snap hooks or similar fastenings, such as indicated at 22, provided upon the respective side edges of the cover ill) ings and secured to the side members of the frame structure.
It will thus be noted from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the preferred and modified forms of the in vention may be equally and effectually as well applied upon my patented structure such as illustrated in Figure l of the drawing to prevent the accumulation or deposits of extraneous matter upon the outer surfaces of the step part 10 and riser part 11 from the under side of a motor vehicle, not shown, when the latter is in transit over muddy and wet roads. A clean step and riser therefor may always be exposed upon the opening of the vehicle door 16 whereby the tonneau of the vehicle may not be littered by trackings from the step part 1Q.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its'form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right'is herein reservedto make such changes as propermatter upon the outer surfaces of the step tread and riser therefor, end plates carried by the housing and secured to the supporting apparatus for the step, a cover plate secured to the top and inner side edges of the end plates and having its lower edge falling short of length of the end plates and resting upon the upper side edges of the supporting apparatus, and the forward side edge of the cover plate having a plurality of cutout portions provided therein for the reception of the operating apparatus for the step.
In-testim-ony whereof I afiix my signature. CARL HENRY VOGEL.
