Application file d February This invention relates to rail joints, and has for one of its objects the provision of a structure of this character which shall include a joint member similar in transverse contour to the corresponding; contour of the rails, wherein theends of the joint member and rails shall be interiitted in a manner to prevent the joint member and rails from having any vertical and horizontal movements relatively and to prevent the pounding of the wheels of a train as they pass over the joint, and wherein the joint member can be firmly connected to the ends of the rail without the aid of fish plates or angle bars.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and desig nated in the several views of the accompanying drawings, by similar reference characters. In the drawings, A designates a pair of rails of which 2 are the bases, 3 the websand 1 the heads. In accordance with my inven tion, the bases 2 are provided at their ends with extensions 5, the webs 3 at their ends with extensions 6, and the heads 1 at their ends with extensions 7, all of which are of the same length. The base extensions 5 are horizontally disposed and are equal in width to and of less thickness than the bases 9;. The web extensions 6 are vertically disposed and provided with openings 8. These extensions are equal in width to the webs 3 and their thickness is less than the corresponding dimension of the webs. The base extensions 5 are situated below the upper sides of the bases 2 to space their flat upper sides from the lower edges of the web ex- JOINT.

The joint member B comprises a base 9, web 10 and head 11, the transverse configurations of which are similar to the corresponding parts of the rails A. The base 9' is provided in its under side with terminal recesses 12 which open out through the ends and side edges thereof and are provided for the reception of the base extensions 5. The web 10 is provided at the ends thereof with vertical recesses 13 for the reception of the web extensions 6, and with openings 14 for the reception of bolts 15 which also pass through the openings 8 in the web extensions 6. The head 11 is provided at its ends with horizontal recesses 16 which open out through the ends and sides thereof and are provided for the reception of the head extensions 7.
The base extensions 5, web extensions 6 and head extensions 7 snugly fit in the base recesses 12, web recesses 13 and head recesses 16, respectively, and due thereto the rails A and joint member B are held against relative vertical movements. The rails A and joint member B are held against relative horizontal movements by the bolts 15, only four of which are necessary to hold the rails and jointmember against such relative movements. The joint member B may be readily connected with the rails A by first placing it on the ties in parallel relation therewith, then moving it on the ties in the direction of the rails until the extensions of the rails are received in the recesses of the joint member, and thereafter applying the bolts 15. The web extensions 6 contact with the upper side of the base 9 and the lower side of the head 11, and due thereto prevent the bending of the base extensions 5 and head extensions 7 during the passage of a train over the joint.
It should be understood that the drawings are merely illustrative and do not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawings are illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed is 1. In combination, rails provided at their adjacent ends with horizontal base and head extensions and vertical web extensions, and a joint member positioned between the ends of the rails and provided with recesses for the reception of said extensions.
2. In combination, rails provided at their adjacent ends with horizontal base and head extensions and vertical web extensions, and a joint member positioned between the ends of the rails and provided in the under side of its base with recesses for the reception of the base extension and in its head with recesses for the reception of the head extensions, and said joint member being provided extensions and vertical web extensions spaced 20 from the base and head extensions, all of said extensions being of the same length, a joint member positioned between the ends of the rails and having a base, web and head provided with recesses for the reception of 2 said extensions, and bolts engaging the web oi the oint member and web extensions.
