The main'object of the invention, gener-A t ally stated, is to provide an improved con-- struction and arrangement of parts whereby the elements .o f each type action are functionally and structurally coordinated tov facilitate printing `in an' improved manner.
' More specifically stated, one of the objects of the invention is to provide improved and highly eiiicient type actions for printing without producing the noise that- -ordinarily results from the operation of the 1 5v type actions.

Another' object of my invention is to so construct and arrangetheparts that each type block at the last portion vof its printing guide and effect an imprint with substanti-y ally a straightline movement. A further object of thevinvention is ,to provide improved means for arresting the return movement of each type bar and the parts connected therewith in a substantially noiseless manner and without rebound.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations' of devices set forth in the following descriptionand particular# lly pointed out in the appended/claims.

lhave shown my invention embodied in the present instance in a Remington-Noiseless No: 6 machine,l but have only shown so much of said machine asis necessary to"- arrive at an understanding of the `invention in its embodiment therein. It should be understood, however, that the invention is not restricted to embodiment in such machin-e, but may be employed in typewriting orlike machines generally, wherever found available.
The present invention has some of the same general objects inview as the structitl operated by either one of two keys. lEach pair of keys actuate a single front-stroke type bar in a substantially noiseless manner to normally selectively print from one or another lower case type on the type bar, depending on which of two keys is actuated, or to selectively printV from one or another upper case type on the same type bar after a relative case shift has been ellected be tween the platen and type bars.
ln the present construction l have modified the means for controlling the paths of movement of eachv type bar so that each bar moves at the last portion of its printing stroke in substantially a straight line into the centerguide, and to the printing point,
as distinguishedfrom a type .moving in an up or down curved path throughout its travel tothe printing point, as disclosed in my hereinbefore mentioned application, Sr. No. 3,365. This change provides for more accurate guiding ot the type block and the provision of better alignment of the imprints.
In the present construction l also have provided improved and highly ciiicient means for substantially. noiselessly arresting each type b ar and the connected vparts in their return to normal position, and for preventing rebound irom such normal position.
ln the present embodiment of my invention the frame of the machine may be said to include a base 1 and so-called frame member 2 on which various working parts of the machine, including the type actions, are sup ported. lt will be understood that the type bars are arranged in a substantially hori- -zontally disposed arc in front of and around the printing point as a center, so that each type bar moves but a short distance in a radial plane to the common printing center, as inthe constructions disclosed in my said eo-Apending applications. rllhe controlling means for each type bar, with the possible exception in some instances of the key levers therefor, move in the same plane as the plane of movement of the associated type bar, or as close to and parallel with such plane as the assembled parts will permit.
With the foregoing general statement lwill proceed to describe a single type action, it being understood that allactions are alike, orsubstantially so, except that they are mounted indifferent planes that vradiate from the. printing center. rlhe description of one Vtype action applies to the others.
Each type action 4comprises a flat substantially horizontally disposed type bar or type carrying member 3 provided with a plurality ot type blocks 4 and 5 fixed thereto. rlhe type block 4 has a lower case type 6 and an upper case type 6a, whereas the type block 5 has a' lower case type 7 for printing a diil'erent character and a companion upper case type 7a, the printing neoaeeo faces of the types on the two blocks being arranged in converging planes. Each type bar is guided against sidewise displacement in its printing movement by three fixed arcshaped guide combs, c, a1, a2, having radial slots in which the type bars move. Each type bar is supported by a pair of links 8 and 9 pivoted respectively at 10. and 11 to the type bar at diderent points in the length thereof; the link 8 being pivoted to the type bar nearest the rear or type-carryingend thereof. The link 8 extends as one continuous member from the pivot 10 down to the lower end of the link -(see Fig. 5) where it is provided with a laterally projecting pivot pin 12. A spring retaining member 8a is riveted near one end to the link 8 and at the opposite end is spaced apart from the link and is adapted to bear on the tree end et' the pivotpin 12, and thus detachably connect the link 8 tothe member on which the link is supported and pivoted.` rlhe lower end of the link 9 is mounted to turn on a pivot pin 13, and the links 8 and 9 are thus mounted to swing respectively on the centers of the pivots 12 and 13 in the movement of the type bar from normal to printing position. ln the present construction the pivot .pin 13 always remains iiXed during. the travel of the type bar to printing posi-l tion, but the pivot pin 12 is arranged to be displaced Jfrom normal posi'fcvj :elw-vnd" Fig. 2,*dnring the travel of the compa-.

The other arm ot the lever 20 is pivoted at 23 to a link 24 pivoted at its upper end, as at 25, to a leverarm 26 pivoted at 27 on the associated hanger 16. rlhelink 24 and 'lever arm 26 constitute two elements or 'reoaeao members of atoggle broken from its straight line position by one of the two printing l keys of the. type action and by which the position 'ot' the pivotal center of the link 8 is controlled. But the closer the approximation to the points indicated the better will the mechanism respond to the requirements pointed out.

This spring is adjustably con# nected at one end to a depending arm 35 on said key lever, and is connecte-d at its other end with a bar 36 that extends beneath all of the key levers and is adjustably mounted by suit-able means in the base of the machine. The key lever 32 isdetachably connected to a link 37 by a pivot 38 carried by .sa-id lever and received in an opening1 in the lower end of said link. Asidebearing spring-plate or clip 39 is Apivoted lever and bears laterally at its free end against the link 37. This clip holds the link connected to the lever` whenthe clip is in the eective position shown, and' enables the link to be detached from the lever when the clip is turned vdown around its pivot 40. The upper end ofthe link is pivoted at 41 to' an actuating member, sublever or lever arm 42 pivoted at 27 on the right-hand side of the bracket 16. This 'lever extends rearwardly beyond* its pivot to' form a second lever arm 26 which constitutes, one member of the con- Tn order to limit the movement of a toggle member 26, and the parts connected therewith, in both directions, T -provide an opening 43 in said member 26 to receive a stop pin 44 fixed to and projecting laterally from one side of the bracket 16.V This stop pin co-acting with one side wall of the opening 4 3, as shown` in Fig. 1, will limit the return movement of the member 26 and the parts connected therewith. This prevents the toggle 24," 26 in its return movement from breaking beyond the substantially straight-line normal position. The effect of maintaining the toggle in` the substantially straight-line position, is to hold the pivot 12 quiescent in the position shown in Fig. 1 when the` type bar is moved to the printing position by the actuation of the key 29. However, )the depression of thev key 31 results in moving the member 26 to the position shown in Fig. 2, where the opposite side wall of the opening 43 coacting with the stop pin 44 limits the movement of said member 26 and the parts connected therewith including the key 31. Thisdepression of the key 31 results in breaking the toggle from the substantially straight line holding position, shown in Fig. 1, to

The proper positioning of the pivot 12 in the Fig. 2 position, and the holding of it in such position by the toggle, is effected before the linal printing movement of the typebar takes place.
The @am printing key 29 Orth@ type' The lever arms 42 and 48 forward of the pivot 27 are parallel with each other and are of like construction, except that the arm 43 is provided `with a depending lever arm 49. This arm 51 which Lhas its rear end pivoted at 52 to a lever 53. The lever 53 is pivoted at 54 on the left-hand side of the bracket 16 and is bent or off-set laterally to form a yoke portion 55 above the bracket and is thence bent downwardly .to form a lever arm 56 onA the left-hand side of said bracket and overlying the lever arm 26, for purposes which will now appear. From an inspection of Fig. 2 it will be seen that the lever arm 4S) is provided with an opening 49, the walls of which coact with the stop pin 58 on the hanger 16 to limit the motion of the member 43-49 and vthe parts connected therewith in both' directions, like the corresponding stops of the member 26, 42.
llt will be understood that after each breaking of the toggle 24, 26 from the Fig. 1 to the Fig.y 2, position by an actuation of the key 31, the returning spring key isintended to return the toggle to normal straight-line position when the operator releases the key. However, it may happen at times that the toggle 24, 26 has not completelyreturned to such position before an actuation of the type bar by the other key 29 takes place. Referring more particularly to Figs. `8 and 4, it will be seen that a' pair of toggle members or links 81 and 82 are united at their adjacent ends by a headed pivot pin 83. This pivot is rivetedto the link 82 and works loosely in an inclined slot 84 in the link 81.
The width f this slot is such that the'pin maybe received `therein with a free sliding fit. The slot extends longitudinally upwardly and forwardly towards the forward end of the link 81 at slightly less than a right anigle to a straight line f (Fig. 8) that passes through the pivots 83,85 and 86 of the links when the, parts areI in the normal position, shown in Fig. 8. The reary end ofthe link 81 has a corresponding slot 87 except that it 0l is inclined'in the opposite direction from the slot 84. The 'slot 87 receives a headed pin 85 secured'to the associated bracket'or hanger 16 to which the pair of linksis anchored.
The headed pivot pin 86 is fixed to the weighted member 79 and the link 82 which.
is pivoted on this pin is maintained spaced apart from the weight by a spacing sleeve 88. The forward end of the link 82 extends beyond its pivot 86 and forms a forwardly tu extending stop projection or finger 89. 'I his stop vprojection is adapted,' under certain conditions, to coact' with a laterally projecting stop pin 90 on the member 7 9, but is normallv out of Contact therewith. By having the stops normally out of Contact, and having them coact only occassionally when the connected ends of the links jolt up too far, l avoid the slight` noise that 'might result by reason of the stops contacting at every operation of the type bar.
Y In the present construction the alignment of ther type bars is obtained by an inclined adjustment of the supporting arm 22 by vwhich the. pivot 21 is carried. f The degree of the angle of this adjustment in the present instance differs from that in my application Sr. No. 3,365, due to other changes made in the. present type action, but the result obtained is-the same. In the present instance I employ this one'adjustment only of the member 22, andto effect it ll provide inclined slots 9,1 and 92 in the member 22, the inclination of the slots corresponding to the line of adjustment ofsaid member 22.
