lhave shown my invention embodied in the present instance in a Remington-Noiseless No: 6 machine,l but have only shown so much of said machine asis necessary to"- arrive at an understanding of the `invention in its embodiment therein. It should be understood, however, that the invention is not restricted to embodiment in such machin-e, but may be employed in typewriting orlike machines generally, wherever found available.
The present invention has some of the same general objects inview as the structitl operated by either one of two keys. lEach pair of keys actuate a single front-stroke type bar in a substantially noiseless manner to normally selectively print from one or another lower case type on the type bar, depending on which of two keys is actuated, or to selectively printV from one or another upper case type on the same type bar after a relative case shift has been ellected be tween the platen and type bars.
ln the present construction l have modified the means for controlling the paths of movement of eachv type bar so that each bar moves at the last portion of its printing stroke in substantially a straight line into the centerguide, and to the printing point,
as distinguishedfrom a type .moving in an up or down curved path throughout its travel tothe printing point, as disclosed in my hereinbefore mentioned application, Sr. No. 3,365. This change provides for more accurate guiding ot the type block and the provision of better alignment of the imprints.
In the present construction l also have provided improved and highly ciiicient means for substantially. noiselessly arresting each type b ar and the connected vparts in their return to normal position, and for preventing rebound irom such normal position.
ln the present embodiment of my invention the frame of the machine may be said to include a base 1 and so-called frame member 2 on which various working parts of the machine, including the type actions, are sup ported. lt will be understood that the type bars are arranged in a substantially hori- -zontally disposed arc in front of and around the printing point as a center, so that each type bar moves but a short distance in a radial plane to the common printing center, as inthe constructions disclosed in my said eo-Apending applications. rllhe controlling means for each type bar, with the possible exception in some instances of the key levers therefor, move in the same plane as the plane of movement of the associated type bar, or as close to and parallel with such plane as the assembled parts will permit.
With the foregoing general statement lwill proceed to describe a single type action, it being understood that allactions are alike, orsubstantially so, except that they are mounted indifferent planes that vradiate from the. printing center. rlhe description of one Vtype action applies to the others.
Each type action 4comprises a flat substantially horizontally disposed type bar or type carrying member 3 provided with a plurality ot type blocks 4 and 5 fixed thereto. rlhe type block 4 has a lower case type 6 and an upper case type 6a, whereas the type block 5 has a' lower case type 7 for printing a diil'erent character and a companion upper case type 7a, the printing neoaeeo faces of the types on the two blocks being arranged in converging planes. Each type bar is guided against sidewise displacement in its printing movement by three fixed arcshaped guide combs, c, a1, a2, having radial slots in which the type bars move. Each type bar is supported by a pair of links 8 and 9 pivoted respectively at 10. and 11 to the type bar at diderent points in the length thereof; the link 8 being pivoted to the type bar nearest the rear or type-carryingend thereof. The link 8 extends as one continuous member from the pivot 10 down to the lower end of the link -(see Fig. 5) where it is provided with a laterally projecting pivot pin 12. A spring retaining member 8a is riveted near one end to the link 8 and at the opposite end is spaced apart from the link and is adapted to bear on the tree end et' the pivotpin 12, and thus detachably connect the link 8 tothe member on which the link is supported and pivoted.` rlhe lower end of the link 9 is mounted to turn on a pivot pin 13, and the links 8 and 9 are thus mounted to swing respectively on the centers of the pivots 12 and 13 in the movement of the type bar from normal to printing position. ln the present construction the pivot .pin 13 always remains iiXed during. the travel of the type bar to printing posi-l tion, but the pivot pin 12 is arranged to be displaced Jfrom normal posi'fcvj :elw-vnd" Fig. 2,*dnring the travel of the compa-.
type bar under the actuation of one of its two printing keys. rlhe pivot pin 12 is mounted on a controlling member lll in. a,

as willbeunder'stood from an inspection of Fig. 2. llhe free end of this lever is pivoted at 17 to the upper end of a curved link 18 pivoted at its lower end, as at 19, to one arm of a bell crank lever 20. rlhis last mentioned lever is pivoted at 21 on a stationary arm 22 that may be adjusted'to diderent set positions on the companion hanger 16,
as will hereinafter more clearly appear.`
The other arm ot the lever 20 is pivoted at 23 to a link 24 pivoted at its upper end, as at 25, to a leverarm 26 pivoted at 27 on the associated hanger 16. rlhelink 24 and 'lever arm 26 constitute two elements or 'reoaeao members of atoggle broken from its straight line position by one of the two printing l keys of the. type action and by which the position 'ot' the pivotal center of the link 8 is controlled. It will be seen that whenthe toggle is in the Fig. 1 substantially straightline holding position` line passes substantially -through the pivots 23, 25 and 27, the pivotal center 12 will be held fixed `at its highest elevation. However, when the toggle is broken to the Fig.
2 position the center 12 is lowered to a dii.-
ferent elevation: y 1 from a comparison of Figs. 1 and 2 and `from a consideration ofFig. 8 that in both these positions thel center 12 is approximately on the same vertical line, and is at'substantially equal distances respectively above and belowa horizontal line passing through the iulerum 15 of the-lever 14; y
The diagram represented in Fig. 8 is intended toshow the disposition of the links 8 and9 and their pivotal points .when the parts are-in printing position under the ac-l tuation of either of the two associated printing keys` Referring particularlyto this figure, it will be seen that due to the specific Construction, and to the relative arrangement of the parts shown, a straight line u drawn through the pivots 10 and 12, when the last mentioned pi-vot remains fixed and 'companion type bar is in the printing position, will when extended, intersect a straight line @..drawn through the pivots 11 and 13 of the link 9. This point of intersection w i will be on a line ai tangential to the platen f Apoint of intersection co the present instance of a\ whether the at the printing point, and at a distance in inches above the printing point.- Moreover, this point of intersection w between the lines in question will be the mately the same, whether vthe pivot 12 be in the Fig. `1or in the Fig. 2 position. This is indicated in Fig. -8 wherein the line y `is' shown passing through the pivots 10 and 12 (shown in dotted lines) when they have been moved down to their Fig. 2 position. -The in question ymay be said to represent the instantaneous center on which the type bar moves near and to the printing point, and which gives. a substantially rectilinear movement to the effective type near the printing .point at the last p0rtion oi. the printing movement'of the bar. The substantially rectilinear movement .in question isf-'one in which the effective-.type-I` type bar is actuated byone or the other of its two printing keys, moves substantially in a straight linewhich if projected would pass through the printing point and the axis oi the by the line e. It may be here pointed out, however, that this construction and arrangement of the linkage to secure the results stated is an Vimportant Vfactor ofA the present invention. `VVhile` theA diagram shown in' Fig. represents I correct construction and disposition ot' the points to give the proper substantially rectilinear movement in question tothe enlective' typeas it approaches the printing point underl the actuation of either' of its two printing keys, it .should be understood that in lpractice these points'may be slid'ably deviated from Iwithout suiiiciently interfering with such movement in question as to make it objectionable. For example, if the lines' u c y should not all .converge at the point w,- or exactly on the tangential line w, good results may be obtained nevertheless. But the closer the approximation to the points indicated the better will the mechanism respond to the requirements pointed out.
I have hereinbet'ore pointed out that each type bar is operated selectivelyv` by two printing keys. @ne key automatically brings one of the upper lower pair of printing position. arrange the printing-keys 28,29, 30 and 31 in four banks,- with the key 29 in the second bank and the key 31 in the fourth bank 'connected to one type action, as shown. The next type action willi-,have its keys 28 and 3() in the first and third banks respectivelyl con` nectedt to the associated type bar. In moving a type bar to printing position under the actuation of the key 29 the type 7 will follow a curved path indicated substantially by the dotted line ,ifthe parts have been properly adjusted. On the other hand, when ,the type bar is moved under the actuation ot the key 31 the type 6 will follow a curved .path 'of the general character indicated by These curves are oppos'itel-y disposed and converge in front otand in line with the printing point, and complete their print-ing movement `from thenceto the platen substantially with arectilinear movement substantially coincident with the lineI a theoretically pair and' theother lone of the types on the type bar to fthe` f' In practice I prefer--t`o"j4 paths of-nlovement ot' a type bar are eonl trolled include in part features which have been described, including the lever 14 by .which the pivotal center 12 of the supporting link 8 may be shifted up and down from the Fig. 1 to the. Fig. 2 position. I will now describe in detail how each type bar has .its path oit/movement controlled from its two. printing keys.I
, trolling toggle, as previously set forth.
' at 40 to the companion key The key 31 is carried by a key lever 32 fulcrumed at 33 in the base of the machine and provided with an individual returning spring 34. This spring is adjustably con# nected at one end to a depending arm 35 on said key lever, and is connecte-d at its other end with a bar 36 that extends beneath all of the key levers and is adjustably mounted by suit-able means in the base of the machine. The key lever 32 isdetachably connected to a link 37 by a pivot 38 carried by .sa-id lever and received in an opening1 in the lower end of said link. Asidebearing spring-plate or clip 39 is Apivoted lever and bears laterally at its free end against the link 37. This clip holds the link connected to the lever` whenthe clip is in the eective position shown, and' enables the link to be detached from the lever when the clip is turned vdown around its pivot 40. The upper end ofthe link is pivoted at 41 to' an actuating member, sublever or lever arm 42 pivoted at 27 on the right-hand side of the bracket 16. This 'lever extends rearwardly beyond* its pivot to' form a second lever arm 26 which constitutes, one member of the con- Tn order to limit the movement of a toggle member 26, and the parts connected therewith, in both directions, T -provide an opening 43 in said member 26 to receive a stop pin 44 fixed to and projecting laterally from one side of the bracket 16.V This stop pin co-acting with one side wall of the opening 4 3, as shown` in Fig. 1, will limit the return movement of the member 26 and the parts connected therewith. This prevents the toggle 24," 26 in its return movement from breaking beyond the substantially straight-line normal position. The effect of maintaining the toggle in` the substantially straight-line position, is to hold the pivot 12 quiescent in the position shown in Fig. 1 when the` type bar is moved to the printing position by the actuation of the key 29. However, )the depression of thev key 31 results in moving the member 26 to the position shown in Fig. 2, where the opposite side wall of the opening 43 coacting with the stop pin 44 limits the movement of said member 26 and the parts connected therewith including the key 31. Thisdepression of the key 31 results in breaking the toggle from the substantially straight line holding position, shown in Fig. 1, to
l the operated position indicated in' Fig. 2,
'thereby lowering the type bar supporting link 8 to change y the pivotal center 12 of the path of movement of the type bar to the printingposition. The proper positioning of the pivot 12 in the Fig. 2 position, and the holding of it in such position by the toggle, is effected before the linal printing movement of the typebar takes place.
The @am printing key 29 Orth@ type' The lever arms 42 and 48 forward of the pivot 27 are parallel with each other and are of like construction, except that the arm 43 is provided `with a depending lever arm 49. This arm 51 which Lhas its rear end pivoted at 52 to a lever 53. The lever 53 is pivoted at 54 on the left-hand side of the bracket 16 and is bent or off-set laterally to form a yoke portion 55 above the bracket and is thence bent downwardly .to form a lever arm 56 onA the left-hand side of said bracket and overlying the lever arm 26, for purposes which will now appear. From an inspection of Fig. 2 it will be seen that the lever arm 4S) is provided with an opening 49, the walls of which coact with the stop pin 58 on the hanger 16 to limit the motion of the member 43-49 and vthe parts connected therewith in both' directions, like the corresponding stops of the member 26, 42.
llt will be understood that after each breaking of the toggle 24, 26 from the Fig. 1 to the Fig.y 2, position by an actuation of the key 31, the returning spring key isintended to return the toggle to normal straight-line position when the operator releases the key. However, it may happen at times that the toggle 24, 26 has not completelyreturned to such position before an actuation of the type bar by the other key 29 takes place. It is in order to rectify the position or insure the complete return of the toggle,"and thus t0 maintain an aecurate positioning of the pivotal center 12 in the Fig. 1 position, that T provide the lever 53, 56 operating in the manner described. Thus, it will be understood that a depression of the key 29 will, lthrough the intermediate train of connections 46, 48, 49, 51, and 53, lower the arm 56. 1f the toggle 24, 26 had not been fully returned after the preceding operation of the type bar by the key 31, then the part 26a ofthe member 26 will extend in the path of the arm 56, and as the latter is moved` down under the actuation of the key 29 the member 26- will be forced to the limit of itsgreturn movement, or until it coacts with the stop 44 in the F ig. 1 position. This occurs before the type bar reaches the printing position under the action of the key 29, and 1nsures the proper positioningl of the pivotal 34 for said' 49 is pivoted at 50 to a link lll) v the associated bracket 16. In the present construction, like those olisclosedv in my-said copending applications, AI employ a single train yof driving means or cnnections for each type action including motion governing means having la momentum accumulator, said governing means being arranged to decelerate the final printing movement ot the type 4bar and'to translate into pressure against the platen the kinetic such means combined with the parts pre viously described that an -imprint may 4be effected in substantially a noiseless manner.
Operating motion is transmitted to `each type barfrom botli ol' its printing keys through the above-mentioned single train of driving means, to a'ctuate each type bar with a substantially uniform :touch from both `its `keys and to provide a` uniform, or substantially uniform, touch on the keys throughout the-system.
It has' been explained that the independe ently operating lever arms-42 and 48 for- Ward ot' their common pivot 27 are `of uniform character' and are mountedto move in parallel p lanes. A main driving'flever 57 is provided in each type action, this lever being pivoted at 57a to a depending arin on struct each` of these levers from vtwo correspondingly 'shaped members spaced apart aiid'lield together in spaced relation by suitsuch as shouldered rivets.' In order to insure contact between the. `co-, acting lever arms 6l, 42 and 48, ,I provide in the present construction a guide comb 65 secured at its upper end, as at66, to the associated .hanger 16.l The coacting lever arms work in guide slots 67 in the comb and. are thus maintained against relative lateral displacement. Referring more particularly to Figs. `8 and 4, it will be seen that a' pair of toggle members or links 81 and 82 are united at their adjacent ends by a headed pivot pin 83. This pivot is rivetedto the link 82 and works loosely in an inclined slot 84 in the link 81.
The width f this slot is such that the'pin maybe received `therein with a free sliding fit. The slot extends longitudinally upwardly and forwardly towards the forward end of the link 81 at slightly less than a right anigle to a straight line f (Fig. 8) that passes through the pivots 83,85 and 86 of the links when the, parts areI in the normal position, shown in Fig. 8. The reary end ofthe link 81 has a corresponding slot 87 except that it 0l is inclined'in the opposite direction from the slot 84. The 'slot 87 receives a headed pin 85 secured'to the associated bracket'or hanger 16 to which the pair of linksis anchored.
The headed pivot pin 86 is fixed to the weighted member 79 and the link 82 which.
is pivoted on this pin is maintained spaced apart from the weight by a spacing sleeve 88. The forward end of the link 82 extends beyond its pivot 86 and forms a forwardly tu extending stop projection or finger 89. 'I his stop vprojection is adapted,' under certain conditions, to coact' with a laterally projecting stop pin 90 on the member 7 9, but is normallv out of Contact therewith. Gravity and i lili the reaction of the parts tend to maintain the" parts so that each of the pivot pins 85 and 88 is normally seated in the'upperend of'its respective slots 84, 87, but under certain'con'- j ditions there may be a change inthese rela- In the operation of the stop links, the returnof the type bar and its train of driving l connections from a projected position, such as is shown in Fig. 2, will tend to bring the w links 81 and 82 from Ithe angular position shown in said figure to a `substantially straight-line position, shown in Fig. 8. lVhen the parts reach this last' mentioned position the links 8l and 82 will eflfcct a dead center pull`against the fixed pivot 85 and arrest further movement of the parts in substantially a noiseiess manner` and 'without rebound. By arresting the return movement ot'k the parts in the manner described the. straightened links absorb the spring of the moving-parts a-nil there is practically no bound or noise produced in effecting the ai-rest; lf for anyrcas0n lthe pivot pins 85A placement to break the links from their,
straight-line position and prevent the links .from locking the action against operation or from interfering with theA printing move-- ment of the parts.
The stops 89 and 90 prevent the links from accidentally jolting upwardly a' material distancg beyond the straight-line position in the return of the parts to normal. position. By having the stops normally out of Contact, and having them coact only occassionally when the connected ends of the links jolt up too far, l avoid the slight` noise that 'might result by reason of the stops contacting at every operation of the type bar.
Y In the present construction the alignment of ther type bars is obtained by an inclined adjustment of the supporting arm 22 by vwhich the. pivot 21 is carried. f The degree of the angle of this adjustment in the present instance differs from that in my application Sr. No. 3,365, due to other changes made in the. present type action, but the result obtained is-the same. In the present instance I employ this one'adjustment only of the member 22, andto effect it ll provide inclined slots 9,1 and 92 in the member 22, the inclination of the slots corresponding to the line of adjustment ofsaid member 22. Two guide pinsi 98 and 94, the latter` being headed, are received in the slot 91, whereas two guide pins 95 and 96 are received in the slot 92, said pins projecting from the left-A hand side of the associated bracket or hanger This' is due tothe inclined slots slotted ends of 16. An eccentric 97 is received in a slot 98 't in the member 22, said slot extending lengthwise at'substantially right angles-to the slotsv 91 and 92. 'The eccentric 97 is provided'with a hexagonal head by which it may be turned to adjust the member 22 in the direction of the length of the slots 91 and A92 therein. A

The adjustment of the arm 100 lto different set positions-on the bracket 16 and around the pivot 101, results in raising or. lowering the pivot 13 ofthe link 9.- As
hereinbefore indicated ythe adjusting'me'ans herein disclosed lhaveV the saine objects lin view as the corresponding adjusting means disclosed in my copending application, Sr. No. 3,365.
It has-been explained that a separate supporting bracket or hanger .16 is provided foreach type action. These brackets are-radially disposed around the printing point, means Vbeing provided Awhereby each bracket, to-
gether with the parts ofithe type action carried thereby, may be individually introduced into and removed from the machine as a separate unit, and may receive an individual adjustment radially towards and from the' printing point. The construction that enables these results yto be obtained is'the same as disclosed in my copending application; Sr. No; 3,365, and is as follows: V The. forwardhorizontally disposed porl tion ,105 of each bracket 1 6 is received in a of the machine.

The guide comb of each type action being individual thereto, and to the hanger or bracketby which the associatedtype action is supported, enables the above mentioned results to be readily atlThe present invention contemplates effecting a' relative case shift movement bev 95 tween the platen 114 and the type bars. Any suitablemeans may be employed for j this purpose, such for example as the pliaten shifting mechanism disclosed in my application, Sr. No. 14,100 filed March 9, 1925. In ^the present construction a shift key 115` (Fig.- 1) maybe assumed to actua-te suitable means (not shown) to shift 'the platen froml the lower case full-line to the upper case dotted line position shown inFig. 1.` In 95. Fig. 2 I haveshown a lower case type 6 on the type block 4 at the printingpoint under an actuation of the key'31. A-depression of the key 29 will bring a lower case type 7 on the type block 5 to -the printing point when 100 the platen isin the full-line Fig. 1 position. When the platen is shifted to' the 'upperl case dotted line position, then one ofthe upper case types 6a or 7 a will be selectively' moved to the printing point, depending on which of the two associated printing keys 29 or 31 'rolling tread on this lever eoacting with the companion-'rolling tread on the double arm A61.0f the driving lever 571gives a variable acceleration. to the motion. of the latter and also providesl a llost motion connection be- '115 This lost motion is brought aboutwhen 'the motion of the .lever 48, land thekey 29 by which it is actuated, a-re brought to rest at. the end of their stroke. "At this time, the driving lever 57 12,
and the parts connected therewith, including the typebar, are permitted to continue their operation independently' ofY the lever 48 and under their own momentum', to effect an imprint'withut the impetus of theactu- 125 atedf key 29 and the parts connected therewith at the final portion of the printing stroke. The motion thus transmitted to the` type bar 'is in the nature of a thrust exerted through the toggle members 73 and .74 .pushmi cated in ing the typebar to the printing point and by the final .expenditure of energy apply a powerful printing pressure. rlhe printing operation of the type bar by anl actuation of thev key 31 is accompanied by a displacement of the pivotal `center 12 of the supporting'link 8, as shown in Fig. 2'. This is accomplished by breaking the toggle 24, 26 from its substantially straight' line position, shown in Fig. 1., to the position represented in Fig. 2, due to the actuation of the lever arm 42 with which the toggle has direct mechanical connection. This results in turning the lever on its pivot 21 and lowering they support-ing lever from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 2 position, as hereinbcfore explained, tlicreby changing-the position of the pivotal cen.- ter 12 of the supporting link 8 and causing the type bar to travel through a different curved path from that which it follows when actuated by the key 29, als indicated by a comparison of the dotted lines I), c in Fig. 1.
An actuation of the type bar b v the key 29 produces a like movement of the single train of connections from-the driving lever 57 to the type bar. In this instance, however, the toggle 24, 26 remains at rest in the substantially straight-line position, as indi- Fig. 1, thereby holding the lpivot 12 fixed against movement while the' link 8 turns thereon. Thisresults in the type bar moving in a curved path. indicated substantially by the ydotted line b in Fig. 1, to print from one or the other of the types or 7a,
depending on `whether the platen is in the lower or upper case position to receive the impress of the corresponding type. A return movement of each type bar and the4 driving connections therefor to normal posi@ tion, whether actuated by the associated key 29 Ior 31, is arrested by the links 81 and S2,
as hereinbefore explained.
In the present construction I am enabled to employ a center type guided that closely 'and effectively guides the type blocks both up and down, as well as sidewise, by reason of ythehereinbefore described substantially straight-line movement given to the 4type block at the last portion of the printing .1novement, and while it is entering the'type guide (Las will be clearly understood .from
aninspectionof Figs. land 7.' vAs shown in Fig'th'e fixed centerguide d has upper anl important and. 'lower guide walls 11G, 117 respectively and oppositely disposed side 'walls 118 and 1719 which cf'i'act with' ,each type block- 4 or 5 as'iit'squarely lenters the guide and accuitA tov the printing point` thus providing'foraccurate alignment. This is factor in a, machine of this character andfthe said striglit-line rnove-l ment. of the effective type block at the last part v'ofthe printing 4movement renders it feasible to thus accurately guide the type.
. Corresp 1t will be seen thatA in the present con-y struction the supporting and guiding links 8 and 9 merely act as suclf'at all times, the driving operation of the type bar being never effected through. said links, and that whether the type bar. be driven by the actuatiorrof one or the other of the keys 29 or 3-1'such driving ope-ration, as such, is effectedindependently of saiddinks, and always through the separat-e and distinct single driving train from and including' 'the lever 57, which eX-. erts at all operations a thrust on the type bar to move to .printing position always in a uniform manner.,
1t will be understood, moreover, that the pivotal support for the link 9 is at all times nuiintainedfixed during the printing operation, whether operating the type action from the key 29 or 31, and that the present contion, aud results to a high degree in a snnple,.uniform accurate, noiscless and reliable printing operation .thatmay be controlled by a standard keyboard.
Vhile I have described in considerable detail the constructional form of the 'vari- Vous members which go to makeup each type action, vI am aware that various changes may be made in the construction, and that certain parts. may be employed without others, without departing from. my inven 'tion as it isv defined in the accompanying claims. However, the form of construction shown and described/ has proven reliable and eificientin use.
YV-hat I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz
