ELECTRIC TORCH.
Application filed ma the provision of an electric torch adapted to throw light in all directions from the bulb of the incandescent electric lamp, and this, by preference, by the use of certain elements in combination with other elements common to the conventional electric flash light.
Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawing, of this specification, in which The figure is a view partlyin elevation and partly in diametrical section illustrative of the torch constituting the preferred em bodiment of my invention.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I employ a cylindrical casing l of the same general form as the casing body of an ordinary flash light, the said casing 1 being equipped with a switch 2 of the ordinary type or of any other approved constructi on compatible with the purpose of my invention, and being exteriorly threaded at one end as indicated by 3.
' In the casing 1 is a battery 4, preferably of ordinary type, and provided with a central end terminal 5, and also in the casing 1 is a grounding terminal 6 which extends in the usual manner to the end of the casing 1 as designated by 7. A conductive collar 8 is threaded on the end of. the casing 1 and has a flange portion ,9 in contact with the terminal 6. and threaded on the said collar ately fixed in the inner'end of the tubular postl12 and occupying the mentioned central aperture in the disk 11 is an insulatingplug 15 and arranged in the said plug 15 is a conductor element 16 which is designed to con-.-

At 18 is the transparent hood, of my improvement, the said transparent hood 18 being .p referably of molded glass and cylindrical in form with its outer end closed and with a flange 19 at its inner end interposed between the flange 10 of the collar 9 and the disk 11.
The lamp 14 of my improvement is controlled through the medium of the switch 2 in the manner common to ordinary electric flash lights. and it will therefore be understood that the gist of my invention resides in the employment of the tubular post 12 with the lamp 14 at its outer end, and the transparent hood 18 resting outwardly beyond the lamp and entirely surrounding the lamp 14 and the post 12, this in order that light will be thrownfrom the bulb of the lamp 14 in all directions from the said bulb, that 1s to say, longitudinally outward and also laterally and entirely about the bulb 14so thatthe torch may be held for the illumination of objects at the side of the torch as well as objects opposite the end of the torch. It will also be appreciated that the globe or hood 18 of molded glass will'afl'ord adequate protection to lessen the liability of the globe 14 being broken in use, the said hood 18 being possessed of the quality of a fender so that the hood 10 may be thrust intoopen portions of machinery without liability of any portion coming into contact with the globe 14.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the major portion of a flash light may be employedin the fabrication of my novel electric torch, and therefore, when deemed expedient a flash light of conventional type may be expeditiously and easily converted lnto an electric torch adapted to utilize the bulb 14 of the incandescent electric lamp for the illumination of objects disposed about the said bulb 14.
It will further be apparent that my improvement is extremely simple and inexpen sive in construction, and with renewal of the battery 4'at intervals, the device is adapted to last and to be used to advantage foran indefinite period of time.
I have specifically described the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding 'of the said embodiment in all of its details.
I do not desire, however, to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement of elements as shown and described, my invention being defined .by my appended claims within the scope of which modifications may be made Without departure from my invention. I
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, a casing, a disk of conductive character arranged in opposed relation to one end of the casing and having a central aperture and also having an outwardly extending tubular post fixed to it and surrounding said aperture, an incandescent electric lamp detachably secured in the outer end of said tubular post, a plug of insulating material disposed in the .inner end portion of said tubular post, a conductive element terminating at the inner end of said plug and adapted to make contact at its outer end with a filament terminal at the inner end of the incandescent electric lamp, a hood of transparent material closed at its outer end and surrounding the lamp and the tubular post and having at its inner end a flange opposed to the said conductive disk, a collar secured on the casing and having a flange opposed to the outer side of the flange on the hood, means in the casing for supplying current to the said conductor element in the insulating plug and the tubular post, and means in the casing adapted in cooperation with the said conductive disk to ground the current from'the lamp filament.
2. In combination, a casing a disk of I conductive character arranged 1n opposed relation toone end of the casing and having a central aperture and also having an outwardly extending tubular post fixedto it and surrounding said aperture, an incandescent electric lamp detachably secured in the outer end of said tubular (post, a plug of in sulating material dispose in the inner end portion of said tubular post, a conductive element terminating=at the innerend ofsaid plug and adapted to make contact at its outer end with a filament terminal at the inner end of the incandescent electric lamp, a hood of transparent material closed at its outer end and surrounding the lamp and the tubular'post and having at its inner end a flange opposed to the said conductive disk, a collar secured on the casing and having a flange opposed tothe outer side of the flange on the hood, means in the casing for supplying current to the said conductor element in the insulating plug and the tubular post, and means in'the casing adapted in cooperation with thesaid conductive disk to ground the current from the lamp filament;
the said means for supplying current to the conductive elementein the tubular post being in the form of a dry battery disposed in the casing and having a terminalin contact with the inner end of the said conductive element, and the same means for grounding the current from the filament of the lamp being in th form of a terminal disposed in the easing and electrically connected with the said conductive .disk.
3. In combination, a, conductive disk having a' central aperture, a tubular conductive post fixed to and extending from said disk and surrounding the aperture therein, an incandescent electric lamp detachably secured in the outer end portion of said post, a dielectric plug secured in the inner portion of said post, a conductive rodlike element'extending through'the dielectric plug and the post and contacting at its outer end with one terminal of the filament of the lamp, said rod-like element adaptedat its inner end to contact with one termiand the tubular post, and having a flange at -its inner end opposed to said conductive disk, and a collar having an-inwardly di rected flange surrounding the hood and restg at the outer side of the flange of the hood.' t
