My invention relates to a grinding member made 0t abrasive material, and has to do more particularly with abrasive members such as are used for grinding gears.
In its specific aspect, the invention is concerned with a grinding member of annular face mill type for operating on gears having teeth curved lengthwise, or curved slots of. other similar articles, and has for its purpose to provide an abrasive member that will operate successfully under continuous working conditions, so that the grindin surface will not become lazed or clogge and thereby rendered ine cient after operation for a time.
To these ends, the invention comprises the structurethat will appear clearly from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel featuures being pointed out in the claim following the description.

The invention may be successfully performed in diderent ways, and for purpose of illustration, i have shown one term of grinding member incorporating the improvement, and intended for use in grinding curved tooth gears,-although the application of the invention is not confined to this par= ticular structure, which is intended only by way of example.
lln the structure disclosed, 1 designates a grinding member or wheel attached by suitable intsrumentalities to a head or support 2. The grinding member 1 is in one piece and formed of suitable abrasive material, as usual in this class of construction. It is or annular face mill type such as employed for grinding the sides of lengthwise curved teeth on spiral or curved tooth gears and has a tapered cross-section to make it suitable for operation on generated involute gear teeth.
It has been found that where a continuous unbroken grinding surface is employed in 3, thus aiiording a series of spaced grinding members 4, and with such an arrangement,
continued operation of the grinder does not affect the grinding surface, other than to wear it away. V.
The grinding member 1 is adapted to be rotated by suitable mechanism in a grinding machine, as usual in this type of apparatus, and the principle of my improvement may be likewise applied to other types of rotary grinding members, such as circular disks in which the outer edge constitutes the grinding portion. Also, the result can be accomplished in other ways than cutting away or notching the grinding surface, so long as the efie;t is to produce alternately disposed grinding portions and spaces, so that the grinding portions come into action successively upon. the work being treated, instead of having a continuous and uninterrupted contact therewith.
While the invention has been described with reference to a particular embodiment, this application is intended to cover any modifications or adaptations of my improvement coming within the underlying purpose of the invention or the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
A grinding member adapted for finishing the sides of teeth on curved tooth gears, consisting of an annular one-piece abrasive member having operative surfaces in convergingrelation to eachother and engageable with adjacent groove bounding tooth faces, the outer ed e of said abrasive member being provide afiording alternately arranged grinding surfaces and spaces on both said converging operative surfaces.
