Application filed March 14., 1921. Serial No. l52Jl32.
My invention relates to an oil or grease nipple for allowing the application of 111-.
bricant. One object of my invention is to provides. means for retaining a dust cap about an oil nipple or the like, in such a manner that its accidental displacement is prevented, even when the device is subjected to heavy jars and vibration, but so that t ma be easily removed when lubricant is to he applied to the nipple. 1
Another object is to provide members of such form that they may be quickly and economically manufactured. Another 0bect is toprovide a means for preventing loss of the cap,'even if the operator neglects to replace it upon the nipple. Other objects oi the invention will be apparent in the course of the following description, and features of novelty will be pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings in which a device embodying the principles of my invention is illustrated, Fig. 1 alongitudinal section through such a device; Fig.2 is
r a longitu inal section of a slightly ditierent form of device; Fig. 3 is a sectionltalren on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig.
' 4; is a section talren on the line H; of Fig.
2; Figs. 3 and i illustrate features common to the forms of the device as illustrated both in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view of a different form of dust cap which may be employed. 6 is a longitudinal section through a device embodying the features of my invention showing a slightly different method of attaching the chain to the nipple.
Referring to the parts in detail, the devices illustrated include respectively nipples 10 and 10, which are similar in form, each having an enlarged end forming a cup 11. Within each of the nipple members there is a check valve, two slightly difi erent terms being illustrated as will be described subsequently. Each oil the-cup members has a circumlerentially extending groove 12. lin this groove the. straight end of the spring is adapted to extend, 'lhis will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. l. This spring is arcuate for the greater art of its extent.
in order toprotect t e oil nipple a dustcap is provided which is adapted to enclose the cup and has formed on its inner lace a cireumterentially extending groove portion of the spring memberwill be deflected outwardly slightly beyond the restrained position shown in Fig. 4: as the spring member is carried upwardly by the cap member.
An car 27 maybe stamped out of the material of the cup adjacent .its open end to "form an eyelet, while surrounding the nipple and abutting the shoulder thereon, is a member 28 having an opening in its central portion through which the nipple passes and having one end bent up and an opening stamped therein to form another eyelet. The cap member may be made of such a length as to have its end seat upon this member 28 when the'cap is in the spring held position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. A chain 29 may be connected to the two eyelets to proill) wall of the cap 40. A short length of wire bent into ill-shape may be employed and the most convenient manner of attaching this piece to the cap, ll. find to be electric welding. This method of construction is very simple, and has the further advantage in not leaving any opening for" dust to pass into the interior of t "e cap.
in Fig. 6 it have illustrated a nipple which is similar to that shown in Fig. 2 except that the chain attaching member of the nipple consists of the strip of metal or loop of wire l2, suitably secured as by welding, to the nipple 43. ll also preier to provide an annular member 4st suitably attached to the nipple and serving as a seat for the dust cap, 25.
reoaaea said second member, adust cap adapted to surround said cup member and seat on said second member, an expanding spring carried by said dust cap, a groove in said cup member, adapted to receive said spring, an eyelet formed by stamping up a portion of said cap, and means for connecting said eyelets.
9. In a device of the class, described, a lubricant receiving nipple having a contracted threaded portion at one end and an enlarged valve chamber at its other end, said enlarged portion having an annular groove formed exteriorly thereof, a-slip-onv dust .cap having an annular groove formed interiorly thereof, a Washer member mount-r ed on the contracted threaded portion of the nipple, an expansible spring member mounted in the groove of the dust cap and having an inwardly extending portion for engaging the groove formed in the enlarged portion of the nipple, the respective grooves being formed in the dust cap and the nipple in such a manner that the spring member may maintain the dust cap with the lower perimeter thereof substantially in contact with said Washer member. a
In testimony whereof, I hereunto ailix my signature.
