Our present invention relates generally to sewing machines and more particularly to the shuttles and under-thread supply thereof, our primary object being the provision for a materially increased thread s ipply tending toward an elimination of the frequent necessity it'or bobbin filling which exists at the present time and a further object is the pro vision of an arrangement or this nature which will be highly effective and efficient in use.
Gui. invention further aims to provide for an under-thread source in the form of a center feeding cop or ball, as well as a bobbin case or holder and a shuttle body, the former having means to tension the thread passing avially therethrough from the stationary ball or cop and also having means cooperating with the shuttle body to detachably support the case or holder in effective position.
By slightly enlarging the shuttle body except as to its race engaging hook, and correspondingly enlarging the bobbin case or holder as well as doing away with the usual metal spice consuming bobbin, we greatly augment the underthread supply and it is a still further object of our invention to do this in such manner as to still permit of the use oi. a metal bobbin in the bobbin case or holder in case this is desired.

Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figure l we have shown certain parts of a sewing machine including an upright shuttle race in which, no the type of machine to which we have shown our invention applied, the shuttle oscillates by virtue of its actuation by an oscillating shaft 11 seen in Figure 2, which is mounted below the. bed 12 seen in Figure 1 and provided at one end with a bracket 13 having oppositely outstanding and curved arms 1% forming a segmental yoke adapted to lie along a portion of the periphery of the shuttle body 15 between the ends of its hook 1.6 which latterare engaged by the ends of the arm 14 so as to impart oscillating movements of the shaft 11 to the shuttle in operation.
According to our improvements the relation and interengagement of these parts are not varied in any way, our improvements lying wholly in the shuttle body 15, the bobbin case or holder 17 which in operation is de tachably mounted within th shuttle body, and the source of. thread supply which is disposed within the case or holder 17.
The shuttle body 15 has the usual chamher 18 within which the case 17 fits and in accordance with our improvements this chamber is substantially larger or in other words of greater diameter than that usually employed and has its wall provided with an internal annular groove 19 and a short axial groove 20, the latter providing for the introduction of a lug 21 outstanding at one point from the peripheral wall 22 of the bobbin case or holder 17 so that this lug can be thus introduced into the internal annular groove 19 and will form with these grooves 19 and a bayonetconnection serving as a lock to detachably hold the bobbin ease within the shuttle body, upon partial rotation of the bobbin case or holder within the shuttle after its lug 21 is within the annular groove 19.
Figure 4 shows the shuttle complete and detached and illustrates the same provided in certain of its walls with openings 23 in order to lighten its weight, it being obvious that the relative arrangement and position of these apertures may be varied at will as occasion demands.
The bobbin case or holder 17 is substantially closed at one end as at 2 1-, this end closure having an opening or openings 25 therein to lighten its weight and to permit its rib 26 between the openings 25 to be utilized as a handle in rotating the bobbin ase or holder into and out of the shuttle lOOC We have also shown in Figures 2 and 5 in particular a thread supply in the form of a cylindrical cop or ball 27 whose ends are covered by paper disks 28 connected by lengthwise covering strips 29 along he periphery of the cop or'ball, the latter being thus of a form adapted to slidably interfit the bobbin case or holder 17 and being also adapt-ed to admit of the withdrawal of the thread from its center through an opening as for instance an opening 30 centrally of one of the end covering disks 28.
To receive the. thread centrally from the cop or ball 27, the bobbin case or holder 1'? is provided with an opening 31 there-through near its center and beneath the :tree end oi a tension finger 32 held by a screw upon said end wall, the latter also having a slot 3-1: leading to the opening 31 and in cominunication with a slot 35 through the peripheral wall of the. case, through which the case may thus be threaded, the thread from the cop or ball passing directly out through the opening 31 as plainly indicated in Figure 2.
The above structuredoes not however preclude the use of a thread holding bobbin 36 of the usual type shown in Figure 3, from the periphery of which the thread "feeds, inasmuch as we propose to slot the peripheral wall oi the. case 17 partly therethrough at one point, as indica ed at 37, through which the thread is passed to a feed opening 38 at the inner end of the slot 37, the thread from this point passing upon the exterior of the case 17 to the tension plate 32 beneath which it is extended so that it finally passes from the bobbin case in the same manner as does the thread when the cop or ball 27 is employed.
In so far as the use and support of a bobbin 36 is concerned our invention simply provides for the personal preference of those who do not object to the more or less frequent refilling of the bobbin but it is obvious that by providing for the use of a cop or ball 27 we not only avoid all necessity tor the refilling of bobbins but we are also enabled to greatly augment the possible capacity of a bobbin with its metal space consuming side walls and its cylindrical core, and eliminate a number of small parts necessary in the usual construction.
We claim:
A shuttle for sewing machines having an enlarged chamber provided in the wall thereof with an annular groove and a longitudinal groove connecting with the annular groove a bobbin case having a peripheral wall within the chamber and an outer integral end wall and open at its inner end, a center tee-ding thread cop non-rotatable in the said bobbin case, said peripheral wall of the bobbin case having a lug movable into the grooves of the shuttle for detachably holding the bobbin case within the shuttle chamber, and said peripheral wall and the end wall of the bobbin case having thread guiding slots leading to a feed openine; adjacent to the axis of the outer wall ot said case through which teed opening the thread from the thread cop directly feeds axially of the bobbin case.
