IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TURKISH AND VPR BATHS.
Spcciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,412. dated March 2, 1875 5 application filed June 3, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. FIRMAN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and use-- ful Portable Improved Turkish Bath and Vapor-Bath Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is a portable bathing apparatus adapted for either hot air or vapor, or both; and it consists mainly in a special arrangement of pipes, cocks, and other appliances, by means of which the bather is enabled to use the apparatus without the services of an attendant, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved bath; Fig. 2, a central sectional elevation; Fig. 3, a side elevation; Fig. 4, a partial perspective view, showing the doors closed; Fig. 5, a plan view of the perforated diaphragm; and Fig. 6, a top plan view, with a portion of the top broken away to show the arrangement of the pipes within.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the inclosin g case or box, coni structed of any suitable size and form, and of any proper material, but preferably made of zinc or sheet-iron, in about the form shown in the drawing. It is provided with a suitable bottom, of the same material, which may be either xed or removable, as desired. a a represent doors, suitably hinged to the sides of a proper opening in the front of the case, as shown, the edge of one of which overlaps the other, as indicated in Fig. 4. al represents a cover, suitably hinged, also, to one side of a proper opening in the top of the case, which is provided with a flange, a2, adapted, when shut down, to hold tightly closed the doors in front, as shown in Fig. 4. One side of this cover is so constructed as to form, in connection with the top plate of the case, a suitable opening for the neck of the bather, as shown. An arm-hole is also suitably located in the top plate in proper relation to the neck-opening and the top cover, and is provided with a hinged cover, a3, Fig. 2, adapted to be opened from the inside, as shown. a4 represents one window, suitably located in the top plate in proper relation to the neck-opening, and a5, Fig. 3, another window, placed in the rear side of the case. a represents an exhaust-pipe, projecting through the top plate, and provided With a cock above and below. a7 represents a thermometer, the bulb of which is held Within the chamber, and the scale of which is conveniently exposed to the view of bather, as shown. a represents the head-rest, pivoted to the top plate and made adjustable by means of the arm a9 and the set-screw al, as shown. b b represent pipes, each communicating upon the outside with suitable generators, one of which is adapted for hot air and the other for vapor, and terminating at proper points upon the inside, the same being provided with regulatingcocks upon the inside and outside of the case, as shown in Fig. 6, the cocks within being located within convenient reach of the bather. c represents a cold-air opening, provided with a suitable damper and valve, the handle of which projects within convenient reach of the bather, as shown. D represents a seat, suitably located within the case and made adjustable by means of the threaded standard, as shown, to accommodate the apparatus to persons of different heights. E, Fig. 2, represents an apparatus for generating heat or vapor, which is adapted to receive gas through the pipe e, provided with the regulating-cocks el e2 within and without the case, as shown. F
represents a diaphragm, interposed between' the person of the bather and the places where the heat or vapor is generated or discharged into the chamber, which is provided with a series of perforations, as shown in Fig. 5, to insure the equable distribution of heat throughout the bath.
' The operation is as follows: The apparatus having been properly prepared the bather places himself within it and closes the doors and the top cover. lf the vapor or hot air is admitted from without the proper cocks are turned and regulated to obtain the temperature desired.
An inside view of the bath can at all times be had by means of the windows, and the temperature therein ascertained by means of the thermometer.
By means of the cold-air pipe or entrance, the exhaust-pipe, and the heating-pipes, the precise temperature desired can be readily obtained. By means of the arm-hole the bather is enabled to personally adjust or rewet the cold compress Worn on the head during the bath, or to use the arm for other purposes. If the heat or vapor is generated Within the bath the amount of flame may be regulated by turning the proper cock.
1f desired, a spirit-lamp may be substituted for the gas apparatus shown.
For convenience of transportation, the case may be made in sections, if desired.
Some of the advantages of the described construction are as follows: It is simple in construction, and can be manufactured for a price that will place it Within the reach of persons of moderate means. It is adapted for either hot air or vapor, or both combined, and can be used without the services of an attendant.
2. The arm-hole, relatively arranged as de-V scribed, and provided with the hinged cover, adapted to be operated from the inside, as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 29th day of May, 1874.
HENRY S. FIR-MAN.
