APPARATUS FOB CLEANING PLATE-GLASS POLISHING RUNNERS.
Application filed March 23, 1923. Serial No. 627,084.
The invention relates to apparatus for polishing` plate glass and particularly to that form of apparatus in which the glass 'to be polished carried beneath a series ot polishers on cars or other carrier apparatus. After a certain iieriod ot' use, the toits o t the runners become calmed with 'the rouge or other polishing nuiterial and their efticieney is reduced. The principal object of the present invention is to provide` a simple, convenient arrangement i'or washing the Jfelts o i the various machines at intervals' without interfering with the continuous operation of the apparatus,
In its preferred 'torni the apparatus com prises a 'pan mounted for n'iovement longitudinallgY ot' the series ot polishing` machines and adapted to be moved beneath each setot 'runners carried by each machine, the runners being tirs-t raised to permit the positioning oft the pan as to receive them. The cleaning may be accomplished by rotating the runners in a cleaning liquid in the poner by applying jets ot' water upward from the bottom o-l the pan against the lower faces of the runners, ln either ease, nieehauica'l means such as brushes may be employed to assist in loosening the rouge from the telts. Certain embodiments of the invention are illus,
trated in the wherein: 4
Figure l is 'transverse section through the ajjiparatus showing the 'meshing devices in position l'or use. Fig. 2 is a plan View ot a part; ol' the apparatus with the washing derice removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the washing' dei/ice by itself. Fig'. l is'an enlarued transverse'seetion'through u part of one side ot the apparatus. and Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section through a modified form ot' construction.
Referring to Figs. l'and l?, l-l are a serits ot tables or trut-lts mounted upon the. track il and carrying' a series of sheets of glass placed end to end which are to be polished. Arranged in series above the tables or trucks are a series of polishing machines. two of which are illustrated in Fig. These polishing machines comprise a siu'iportiug` trziimeivorlt E made up ot commerciai sei/'tier as illustrateth and carrying the rotatirff" "frames i'ww-t upon which the polishiuu mers are carried. The run ners curr the polishino,` telus ti upon their lower si l. mul are .mounted upon spindles 7 accompanying drawings slidable vertically through the frames l so that the weight ot the runners is imposed upon the glass when the supporting frames are lowered. The trames 4 are rotated by m xuns ot' the spindles S provided with the spur gears J and driven from the pinions lt). llach machine preferably has its own operatiuu' motor 1l mounted upon the top of the framework and arranged to drive the spindle t through the belt l2 and gears i3 and l-i; the latter ot which is keyed to the shaft l5 which carries the pinion itl. The method of driving the spindles 8 is immaterial in so tar as the present invention is concerned.
Provision is made 'ior raising and loweriurv the ruimer 'Frames h'l hy means ot the levers ltl pivoted upon the brackets 1T and engaging tht thrust hearing member itl, the upper hilt' of which secured to the shaft o. The outer end oi the lever is provided with the threaded rod 19 which is moved up and down thri'iugh the nut 2() carried upon the bracket 2l by means ot' the hand wheel 'l'his part of the apparatus is employed in raisinmr and lowering the runners to permit. ot' the washing operation, as hereinafter described. Any other desired means might be employed tor securing this vertical movement ot the runners.
The Washing:r device consists et .the pan preferablyY in the form of a casting carrying upon its bottom the pertoratei'l spiral pipe 2l and the brushes rl`he pan is mounted upon four wheels or rollers Q6 and these rollers are carried upon a trad; 2T extending` longitudinally ol the apparatus. lVater is supplied to the spiral pipe from the pipe 2S having the controlling valve 2i) and connected to the flexible pipe 30. ln ordc'r to position or index the pan in proper position, it is provided at its sido edges with a pair ot pioneers Si normali)Y pressed down hy the springs 32 and adapted to cir rage recesses suitabl;r located in the rails 2T. In order to prevent splashing' from the machine during the washing operation. the shield l-'l is preterabhr employed, si-eh Kshield being made in two or more seeth and applied to the pan utter it is in position i'or use. The shield is inclined as indicated in lille'. and is held in position hy means. ot
`brackets 35 whose lower ends `engage :i
groove extending' around the periiihery oi' the pan. The shield 3lis preferably made in two or more sections, which are removed llt) by lifting them vertically, thus withdrawing thc lower ends of the brackets la l(Fig. l) i'roni the `groove `in the edge ot the pan. The pan is provided with a suitable drain pipe '36 for removing' the mixture ot' ivater and rouge which collects therein.
ln carrying out the Washing operation, the pan is nioved successively under the series of runner 'l1-ames, vthe washing occurring at intervals such as are found necessary in order to keep the i'elts in proper Working condition. lIn order to position the pan between the runner trame l and the glass carried on the tables therebeneath, this runner traine is raised by means of its lever 16 to a height such as to permit the pan to be run between the glass and the runners, atter which the shield 25% is placed in position and the valve 29 leading to thefspiral pipe opened so that the vvatcr trom lthis pipe is directed upwardly against the lower faces of the t'elts. At this time the runners are lovvered so as to bring their faces into contact with the brushes 25, thus loosening' the` rouge upon the telt and speeding up the cleaning operation. The spindle carrying the runner trame and runners continues to revolve so that the felts are carried across the brushes and past the sprays of water from the pipe 24. lt desired, the outlet from the drain pipe 36 may be closed so as to provide a bath ot liquid in the pan in which the lelts rotate. After the telts are suiiiciently cleaned, the runner trame is raised., the shield 3l removed and the Washing pan moved on to the next machine Where the cleaning cycle, as above described, is repeated. lt will be seen that the cleaning ot the successive runners ot' the series may be carried on without discontinuingy the polishing operation of the series as a Whole7 only one runner being out 'of commission at any one time.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modification in which the brushe: 25 otl Fig. l are removed and in place thereot the metal at the bottom ot' the pan is roughened, as indicated at 37, for engaging the lovver faces of the :telts in order to loosen the rouge. Various other means might be employed for securing the applicaltion of liquid to the bottom ot' the runners and for mechanically engaging the felts 'to loosen the rouge.
