My invention relates to devices for use 1n connection with liquid dispensing pumps, and more particularly gasoline pumps such as are used at filling stations, to cause the -pum'ps to dispense a quantity or volume of the liquid according to a price named by the custom er. It will be fully understood from the following description, in which apreferred form 'of the device is referred loto yin connection :with the accompanying drawings, in which:

The device of the present invention isA employed in connection. with gasoline dispensing pumps or other liquid dispensing pumps, which, have hitherto been so constructed as to provide limiting stops for the 3U operation of the pump, these stops being set to cause the pumps to dispense xed volumes of lliquid; Ifor example, the gasolinev dispensing -pump at resent most in use is provided with a fixe stop so arranged that the pump is caused to dispense, say, five or ten gallons of gasoline. The price of such volumes of gasoline ordinarily amounts to sums`invoivin odd cents and their sale frequently entails inconvenience and loss of time inmaking change and in `handling small currency. In accordance with the present invention, such a dispensing pump is. provided with-a device whereby volumes of gasoline may be dispensed ac cording to ixed prices named by the cus tomer, suitable means being provided fordetermining the volume of the liquid dis-. pensed in accordance with current prices of unit volumes of the liquid, In the preerred form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, it'is embodied in a separable and readily applicable attachment which- ,may be employed in connection with an ordinary gasoline dispensing pump set to dispense xed volumes of gasoline, the pump Fig. 4 is a sectional View through a modi- 1923. serial No. 652,533.

Thisxed lug 11 is rovided with a threaded opening'through w ich passes a screw 12, the end of this screw forming the stop for determining the volume of gasoline normally dispensed. The plunger rod of the pump (not shown) is provided with a projecting lug 13, which rises during the pumpf ing operation and, at the momentthe predetermined volume of gasoline has been dispensed, engages the end of the screw 12. The po'sition of this screw is variable, as is readily apparent, and it may be adjusted to insure accuracy of the volume of gasoline to be dispensed.
In the illustrated form of device for my purpose, a rod or bar 14 is provided, having graduations 15, these graduations indicatingl the price per gallon of the gasoline dispensed. A range of prices from 21 to 25 cents per gallon by tenths of a cent is indicated by the graduations. The bar 14 is preferably square in cross-section and may be made ,of any suitable material, for example, brass, duralumin, or the like.
The rod is provided at one end with suitable means ior attaching or clamping it to the iixed stop member 11 of the pump. This may suitably be a spring clamp, formed by a projecting member 16 rigidly secured as at 16l to the bar 14 at a predetermined distance from its end, and a rojecting flat spring 17 secured to the .en of the bar 14, as by a screw 18. The fixed projecting member 16 has formed in its upper surface a depression 19, into which the endof the fixed gallonage screw 12 is adapted to fit, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The fixed gallonage screw, which is' provided with a notched head 20, may also be provided with a central conical. projection 21, passing through an aperture in the flat spring 17. The rigid member 16 and the s resilient member 17 .thus form together a clamp, by means of which the entire device may be readily attached to and detached from the fixed gallonage stop of the pump.
In Figs. ,4 and 5 a modified form of spring retainer 17El (corresponding to the resilient member 17 of Fig. l) is shown, this form of retainer bein adapted' for use in connection with the xed gallonage screw provided with the notched head, but not having the conical projection illustrated in Fig. 1. In Figs. 4 and 5, the numeral 12a indicates the fixed gallonage screw, which is provided with a notched head a having a fiat top. The numeral 14a indi cates the upper portion of a graduated rod p corresponding to the rod 14. The flat spring 17 is shown to be secured to the top of this rod by screw 18a, this corresponding to the mode of attachment shown in Fig. l. To the end of the iat sprin 17=1 there is pivotally secured a small at late 17", which may suitably be of genera triangular form, and from the bottom of this plate there depend thezspaced buttons 17 c, adapted to enter adjacent notches of the head 20a. This form of spring device may be employed in connection with flat-headed ixed gallonage screws.
A second laterall projecting member 22 is slidably mounted7 to be adjustable upon the rod 14. This projecting member is provided on its under side with a recessed portion 23 in which is set a hardened button 24, the dimensions .of the surface of which are substantially the same as those of the end surface of the fixed gallonage screw 12. This button 24 is so disposed as to be in exact alinement with the xed gallonage screw 12, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2. The laterally projecting member 22 is also provided with a threaded opening 25, through which works an adjusting screw 26 having a notched head 27 to abut against the lower surface of the fixed laterally projecting clamping'member 16. The
' adjusting screw 26 may be retained in any desired position by means of a lock in 28, which is slidably set in a hole bored t rough the rod 14 to engage the head 27, and is held in position by means of a removable pin 29. A notch 30 is provided in the rod 14, into which the head 27 of the adjusting screw 26 partially enters. A set screw 31 is provided to aid in holding the laterally projecting stop member 22 in place.
In operation, the fixed gallonage stop 12 is adjusted so that, in the normal use of the pump, a fixed amount of gasoline, say ive gallons, is delivered when the member 13 is raised by the action of the pump until `it engages the end oft the stop. In normal operation. the pump therefore delivers, with a full stroke of the plunger, ve gallons of gasoline. In instances,v such as occur,
aecasaa where the customer asks to have delivered to him a certain Worth of gasoline, say a dollars worth (instead of requesting a certain gallona e) and the value of which per gallon may e, for purpose of illustration, 22 cents, the rod 14, the movable stop member 22 on which has previously been set to the 22-cent mark on the rod,'. as indicated, is clamped upon the fixed gallonage screw 12 in the' manner shown in Fig. 1 (or in Fig. 4). The position of the graduations on the rod 14 are calculated in accordance with the dimensions of the pump, and the stop 24 instead of the screw 12, becomes the limitin stop for the movement of the plunger ro, being engaged by the projecting member 13 at recisely the same art of the latters sur ace as is engaged yy the end of the screw 12 in the gallonage dispensing operation of the pump. When the stop button 24 is thus engaged, the operation of the pump is stopped, the pump having at that time delivered the volume of gasoline corresponding to the fixed price set ($1.00).
Although the present invention has been described in connection with the specific details of a device embodying it, it is not intended that these shall be regarded as limitations upon the scope of the invention except in so .far as included in the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a liquid dispensing pump having a fixed plunger-rod sto a supporting member provided with a gra uated scale indicating price of unit volumes of liquid, a stop device adjustably mounted on said supportin member, means for retaining said stop evice in a predetermined position on the sup orting member. and means for clamping t e supporting member on said fixed plunger rod stop.
2. In combination with a liqluid dispensing pump having a fixed gal onage stop, means for dis ensing volumes accordin to stated prices t erefor, said means inclu ing a supporting member, means for clamping the supporting member to the fixed gallonage stop, a lug slidably mounted upon saidsupporting member, said lug having a stop button Vin substantial alinement with the fixed gallonage stop, a graduated scale being provided indicating prices of unit volumes of the liquid, and means for securing the lug in a predetermined position on the supporting member in accordance withindications on the scale.
3. In an attachment for dispensing volumes of liquid ata stated price by means of a pump provided with a fixed gallonage stop, a' rod provided with a graduated scale indicating prices of unit volumes of li uid a lug slidably mounted on said rod, a xed lug mounted on said rod and s aced from' the end thereof, aspring inem r secured mtl to the end of said rod, the fixed lug and the spring member being provided with means for" engaging the fixed gallonage stop of the pump, and means for retaining the slidable lug in set position on the rod.
4.
