H. P. MEREDITH SHIPPING DEVICE Filed March 15, 1925 ERED/TH .lg Hmgry ATTORNEY Patented st. 19, 1926.
UNITED STATES:
HARRY P. MEREDITH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SHIPPING DEVICE.
Application filed. March 13, 1925.
It is the primary object of my invention to provide a strong, compact and easily handled device for supporting motor vehicles when they are being shipped.
In furtherance of this primary) object, l have constructed a device of tapering forn'iationlarge at the bottom and small at the top-which may be said to generally resemble a half cone and which may be stamped from sheet metal in a single piece with the possible exception of the vehicle engaging fitting. In addition to the rigidity, compactness and cheapness of my improved de vice, its construction permits the unitary tying together of the entire supporting means coupled with a floor engaging area which permits nailing of the device to Various boards in the floor with the consequent result that the injurious effect of one board being in bad condiition does not materially detract from the holding ability of my de vice.
My invention consists in the arrangement, combination and construction of my improved device as described in the specification, claimed in my claims and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which;
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved device, shown attached to a vehicle axle or hub.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of my improved device without the vehicle attaching.
Fig. 4 is a detailed view in section illustrating the form of supporting platform utilized in connection with my device.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a slightly modified form of my device, showing the same in a semi-conical form.
I have shown a floor consisting of a plurality of boards 5 and a vehicle wheel 6 having an axle or hub 7 engaging a fitting 8. The fitting 8 is secured toa platform 9 by means of bolts 10.
The platform 9 is an integral part of a main supporting element indicated generally as 11. The supporting element .11 consists of a single piece of sheet metal stamped to provide a reinforcing edge 12 at the front thereof. A horizontally disposed floor, engaging fiange 13 around the bottom thereof, and is bent intermediate its edge as at 14 and 15, so as to assume a general cone shaped or pyramidal appearance. A plurality of sections 16 are cut from the face of the Serial No. 15,182.
support in order to lighten it. A cross member 17 is extended across the inner side of the supporting element being secured to the flange 12 at either side thereof at 18 and 19.
The platform 9 is formed of. double thickness, by bending the tongue 20 upon itself. The free end of the tongue 20- is positioned along the inner face of the supporting element and. may be secured thereto by welding or. otherwise. i 7
It will be readily seen that my improved device has great rigidity because of its shape and because of the flanges 12 and l3, as well as the bends 1d and 15. It will be further seen that when the device is nailedto the floor boards 5 by means of a plurality of nails 21, the staggered relation of the flange 13 to the boards utilizes a largenumber bf boards for securing the element in place so that a weak or rotten board will have no material effect upon the whole. This is particularly true in View of the fact that the supporting element consists in a single piece of material.
It will be further seen that my improved device may be easily returned and re-used inasmuch as its shape is particularly adapted to nesting one Within another. A group ofthese supporting elements after being nested, may be tied together thru the openings 16 and returned for re-use.
I desire to point out the particular strength of my device which is given by the semi-pyramidal shape thereof. It will be understood, of course, that a semi-conical shape is the full equivalent thereof and my claims are to be construed in that light.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the arrangement, combination and construction of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims such changes as may be reasonably included within the scope thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A shipping support comprising a single piece of sheet metal of substantially semi-pyramidal form having a relatively wide base and a converging top, and means for securing said top to the aXle of a vehicle.
2. A shipping support comprising a single piece of sheet metal of ubstantially semi-pyramidal form having a relatively wide base and a converging top, means for securing said base to a floor and means for securing said top to a vehicle.
single piece of sheet metal of substantially semi-pyramidal form having a relatively Wide base and a convergent top said sheet having angular bends therein for reinforcing it and giving it a semipyramidal shape.
l. A shipping device comprising a single piece of sheet metal having a relatively Wide base and a converging top, said sheet being bent in a vertical plane to present a semipyramidal shape.
5. A shipping device comprising a single piece or" sheet metal having a relatively Wide base and a converging-top, said sheet being bent in a vertical plane to present a semi.- pyramidal shape and a cross piece tying the vertical edges of said sheet together.
6; A shipping support comprising a single piece of sheet metal or" substantially semi-pyramidal form having a relatively wide base and a converging top, a horizontal flange on said base for securing the sheet to a floor, and means for securing said top to a vehicle.
7. A shipping support comprising a single piece of sheet metal of substantially semi-pyramidal form having a relatively wide base and converging top. flanges on the horizontal and inclined edges said device, and means for securing said top to a vehicle.
8. A shipping device comprising a single piece of sheet metal having a relatively Wide base and a converging top. said sheet'being bent in a vertical plane to present a semipyramidal shape to it, and said sheet having plurality of openings cut in it to lighten it.
9. A shipping device comprising a single piece of sheet metal having a relatively Wide base and a converging top, and a strip or" metal on the top of said sheet, return bent to provide a double thickness seat.
10. A shipping device comprising a single piece of sheet metal having a relatively Wide base and a converging top, and a strip of metal on the top of said sheet, return bent to provide a double thickness seat one end of said strip being bent along the vertical surface of said sheet and secured thereto.
ll. A shipping deviee comprising a single piece or" sheet metal having a relatively Wide base and a converging top. and a strip of metal integral with the top of said sheet, return bent to provide a double thickness seat and having its free end disposed ad jacent the vertical portion of said sheet.
