My invention relates to a new and novel nonreusable dispensing container adapted particularly as a combined shipping and dispensing receptacle for plastic substances, such as lubricating greases and the like.
My invention relates more particularly to a new and novel dispensing device for lubricating greases adapted to exude the plastic lubricating grease from a combined shipping and dispensing nonreusable container into the grease gun or other pressure devices commonly employed for the application of lubricating grease to parts of machines, such as the bearings of automobiles.
My invention relates more particularl to such types of dispensing containers for lubricating grease, which embody a new and novel nonreusable feature, whereby the grease receptacle when once emptied by the normal process of exuding grease therefrom into the grease gun cannot again be refilled without destroying, damaging or leaving some marks thereon, which would indicate that such container had been refilled.
With the above ends in view, my invention consists of a novel nonreusable dispensing can of substantially cylindrical or other shape having therein an inner follower lid or piston provided with a central opening therethrough and a short slightly tapered annular flange around said opening, for the reception of the mouth of the barrel of the grease gun or other pressure feeding device, said can having a bottom rigidly and permanently fixed to the walls of the container, which bottom has a contour precisely. the same as that of the inner follower lid, including a central projection adapted to be seated within the central opening of said inner follower lid, when the latter has been 7 forced down to the bottom of the container, whereby said inner follower lid will be retained upon and by the bottom of the container in a substantially permanent manner, thus preventing said container from being reused or refilled in the original manner.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same have been foilnd in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be un- -derstood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organizel and that my invention is not. limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalltles as here1n shown and described. Referring to the drawings:
1 designates my novel nonreusable dispensing container or can, comprising the cylindrical or other shaped wall portion 2, an upwardly dished bottom portion 3 and an upper dished removable cover or lid 4. Within the container 1 is positioned an inner follower lid 5, which consists substantially of a disc 6, having an outer peripheral packing or guiding ring 7 integral therewith, and
extending upwardly from the peripherythereof. A central opening 8 is provided in said inner follower lid 5, for the purpose of exuding therethrough the grease or other contents of the container, the size of said opening dependin on the mouth of the receiving receptacle 1nto which the contents of the container is to be transferred, such as the barrel of the grease gun 9, indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1. In order to assist in centering and seating the mouth of the grease gun barrel firmly and accurately thereon, said openin 8 is provided with upwardly extendmg, s ightly tapered perip eral rim or annular flange 10 forming an exit nozzle around said opening 8 upon which the mouth of the grease gun seats. Thus in forcing the inner follower lid 5 from its normal position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, down towards the bottom of the can as shown in full lines of Figure 1 and finally into the lowermost position indicated in Figure 4, the contents or the material origina y confined between the inner follower lid 5 and the stationary bottom 3 of the container to the contact between said flange {I and the" wall 2 of the container. The flange 7 also functions as a packing thereby to prevent any material from adhering to the inner sur faces of the wall 2, thereby preventing any of the material from being exuded from between the inner surface of'the wall 2 and the follower lid 5, thereby preventing any wastage due'to these causes. In the use of my device, I superimpose the mouth of the barrel of the grease gun 9 or other pressure feeding device into which the contents of the container are to be transferred upon the nozzle 10 of the inner follower lid when in its uppermost position, seen in dotted lines in Figure 1, and force said gun downwardly against said inner follower lid .5, thereby pushing both the gun and the inner follower lid together towards the stationary bottom 3 of the container, thereby forcing the contents of said container from between the inwardly moving follower lid and the stationary bottolnf out through the opening 8 into the barrel of the gun 9. In order to prevent any waste whatsoever of the grease or other contents of the container, the inner follower lid 5 has preferably the contour shown in Figures 1 and 4 thereby producing a slightly upwardly inclined annular area or surface, which. will. act to compress the plasticcontents of the container towards the central opening 8, thereby reducing or minimizing the total resistance offered by the material in or during the dispensing the same.
It will further be-'11oted that the bottom 3 of the container is also provided with an upwardly dished annular portion 11 of prec sely the same contour as the annular port1on 6 of the movable inner follower lid, and isalso provided with a central upwardly extending projection 12 having its top 13 closed, and having a slightly inclined or upwardly converging annular wall 14, adapted to sit snugly within the opening 8 when the can 2 has been emptied and the parts are in the position seen in Figure 4. Thus after forcing the inner follower lid 5 down to the bottom of the container into the position shown in Figure 4, said inner follower lid 5 becomes snugly seated in close contact with the stationary bottom 3 of the container and contacts therewith throughout its entire area as indicated in Figure 4, thereby forcing out substantially all of the material contained or confined between the inner follower lid 5 and the stationary bottom 3 through the central opening 8. When in its lowermost position, as
seen in Figure 4, the portion 10 of the inner follower lid 5 is seated below the projection 12 of the stationary bottom 3 and'owing to .the'close fit between the walls of the central opening 8-and the walls 14 of the projection 12, said inner follower lid 5 will be held to or against the bottom 3 by frictional engagement between the projection 12 and the inner wall of the nozzle 10, thereby preventing the removal or withdrawal of the inner follower lid 5 from the bottom of the container and further preventing the refilling of the container. -The inner follower lid 5 is retained in its bottommost position shown in Figure 4 by the natural suction created between the stationary bottom 3 and the closely fitting follower lid 5, which is augmented by the slight film which is confined between the juxtaposed contiguous surfaces'of the stationary bottom 3 and follower lid 5 is in-the position shown dotted in Figure 1 with the grease or other material confined between said inner follower lid 5 and the stationarybottom 3, the convexed cover or lid 4 serving to close the top of the container, so as to prevent access to the'in 'ner follower lid 5'and the contents thereof,
and said lid'also provides ample room for the upwardly extending nozzle 10 of said inner follower lid.
By my novel construction of dispensing container, I have further provided a novel means, whereby said container cannot be reused again in the original manner, as shipped by the manufacturer since I prevent the replacing or substitution of the original contents with an inferior material or grease, so as to defraud the buying public, since any attempt to lift the inner follower lid 5 out of or away from the bottom 3 of the container, will result in the serious damaging or marring of the walls of the containeror inner follower lid or both, which would on its face be a warning to the purchaser and in practice satisfactory and reliable results,
it is to be understood that such embodiment is susceptible of modification in Various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, a can, a bottom therefor, having a central upwardly projecting portion, and an inner follower lid having a central opening, said opening being of suitable diameter with respect to said projecting portion, so as to permit the latter to project therethrough, and to seat therein snugly, and frictionally to engage the follower lid when said can is empty and said inner follower lid is in its lowermost position, so as to retain said follower in its lowermost or empty position against said bottom.
2. In a dispensing container, having substantially parallel walls, a stationary bottom having an upwardly dished annular portion and an inner movable follower lid within said walls and contacting with the inner surface of said wall throughout its periphery, said inner follower lid having an upwardly dished portion of precisely the same contour as the upwardly dished portion of the stationary bottom, a central nozzle extending upwardly from said inner follower lid, a corresponding central projection extending upwardly from said stationary bottom and adapted to-fit snugly within said nozzle thereby frictionally to engage the same and thus to retain said follower lid in its lowermost position.
