UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
STERLING I-I. CAMPBELL AND FRANK H. IIETZSCI-I, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, AS- SIGNORS TO RAILWAY DEVICES COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORA- TION OF MISSOURI.
ANGLE-COCK HOLDER.
Application filed August 25, 1922. Serial No. 584,254.
Our invention relates to an angle cock holder for railway cars and has for its object the production of a simple, cheap and strong holder which may be used to effectively support the angle cock at a substantial distance in front of the face of the car. llerctofore it has been customary to make the angle cock holder integral with the striking block or to form it of a casting attached to the striking block, end sill or other con venient portion of the car. Such construe tions are satisfactory when the angle cock is to be supported only a short distance in front of the car. hen, however, the angle cock is to be positioned a considerable distance in front of the car end they are not suitable. To meet this latter requirement the hereinafter described holder has been designed.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of holder made in accordance with our invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the device attached to the end sill of a car, Figure 2 is a view on a reduced scale, partly in section and Figure 3 is a side view, the angle cock being omitted.
5 indicates the end sill of a railway car. A plate 6 of Wrought iron or steel forms the body of our holder andis provided with a turned over web 7 adapted to bear against the face of the sill 5 and secured thereto by rivets 8 or other fastening means. The plate (3 and web 7 are so formed that the plate will be positioned at an angle to the vertical and will project forwardly at an angle to the plane of the car end and at an angle to a horizontal plane. The plate is provided near its forward end with a pair of holes for receiving the arm of a U-bolt 9, which arms are threaded to take nuts 10 by means of which the U-bolt is clamped around the angle cock 11 forward of its body portion to hold it firmly against the face of the plate. The angle cock 11 is provided with a handle 12 of the self locking type, the projecting rear end 13 of which would strike against the plate 6 if provision were not made to overcome this difiiculty. To obviate this objection we form in the plate 6 an opening 14 providing a recess for the passage of the pro ecting rear end 13 of the handle, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
It will be evident that our construction produces a strong and simple holder by means of which the angle cock may be supported at any desired distance in front of the car and which will firmly hold the angle cock in the proper angular relation to the car.
The positioning of the plate with its width lying in a plane at right angles to the end of the car causes the forward strain on the angle cock when the air hose is uncoupled to be substantially in the direction of the Width of the plate and consequently the plate may be made lighter than if thestrains were of such direction as to tend to bend it transversely.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A device of the class described comprising an elongated metal plate adapted to be secured to the end of a car and projecting lengthwise forwardly and downwardly therefrom and also inclined laterally, said plate being arranged with its width lying in a plane substantially at right angles to the end of the car and with its length lying substantially in the direction of the pull of the brake hose and means for securing an angle 7 cock against one face of said plate at the forward end.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands.
