IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR STUFFING MATTRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [60,289, dated March 2, 1875; application filed March 17, 1874.

in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Stuffing Mattresses, having for its object to improve the construction of said devices, and furnishing a machine simple in construction, efficient in use, and not liable to get out of repair.

And it consists in the construction of the holder in which the material is placed, and the combination of the holder and presser, and the locking device, and in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out by the claims; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings with letters of reference marked thereon forming a part of this specification, in Which Figure l is a plan view of a machine embodying my invention. The frame consists of two bed-pieces, a, having six standards, b-three upon each side, and three cross-bars-the rear and center bars being composed of two bars, or one bar slotted, as shown at b. The front uprights or standards extend a sufficient distance above the cross-bars to allow a rock-shaft, G, to be journaled therein, to which shaft is hinged the side bars B of the holder. To these bars B the bottom plates B are rigidly attached, while the center bottom plate B is secured to the cross-bars, so that the side bars B, with plates B, may be moved to and from each other to adjust the size of the holder, which is held in proper position, when filled, by keys'N and wedges S, the keys passing through the slotted cross-bars, placed in proper position, and held by the wedges S, the upper part of the key coming in contact with the outside of the side bars B. A represents the central bar of the presser, attached to the rock-shaft Gr, having a metal plate, A, secured on the under side of the bar A, while the side bars D of the presser are also attached to the shaft G at their front ends, and are provided with guides c, which enter slots in the bar A, so that the side bars D can be adjusted to or from each other, thus adjusting the presser to the required size to accommodate itself to the side of the holder. ()n the bottom of the holder, at the front end, is a guide, 0, which receives the handle or bar J of the follower, which rests and slides upon the bottom of the holder, and has a head, a, and springs e, as shown. The follower is operated by the shaft K and wheel L, the shaft being journaled in the forward standards I), as shown at W, and the follower-handle connected to the shaft K by a cord. To the bed-pieces a; and central standards are secured supplemental standards y, which extend upward a sufficient distance above the holder, and are provided with suitable journals to receive the shaft H, which is provided with a pulley, M. Ropes or cords d are secured to the shaft H, and. extend backward to the rear portion of the presser, and are secured thereto, by which means the presser is elevated, when desired. To the outside of one of the bed-pieces a hook, P, is pivoted, said hook extending upward nearly to the top of the presser, when the presser is down. On the opposite side of the machine, to the rear standard, is pivoted a lever, B, having a hook, P, pivoted thereto. Said lever is held down by a stop, U, on the center standard. These hooks P P, and lever B are for the purpose of forcing the presser down into the holder, which is accomplished by the assistance of the bar P, as presently described.

The operation of our invention is as follows: The holder is adjustedin width to correspond to the size of the mattress to be filled, and held in such position by the keys and wedges described. The follower drawn back, and the presser being elevated, the material with which the mattress is to be filled is placed in the holder. The presser is then let down, and the bar P is placed under the hook P and over the rear parts of the presser, as shown in Fig. 1, and the lever B raised until the hook P is sufficiently high to catch the opposite B, substantially as and for the purpose here in set forth.
