Description

w. F, COLE SURGIGAL INSTRUMENT Filed Sept. 8, 1921 A TTORNE YS WITNESSS Patented Oct. 12, 1926.
UNTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FRANKLIN COLE, OF WACO, TEXAS.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENT.
Application filed September 8, 1921.
My invention is an improvement in surgica instrumente, and has tor its object to provide an instrument of the character specified by means ot which enemas may be given in a sitting position and without the necessity tor the patient assumin` a reclining position.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved instrument.
Figure 2 is a side view with parts in section.
In the present embodiment of the invention, a curved tube l is provided having at one end a ball shaped head 2, and having at the other a lateral tubnlar extension 3.' The bore 4: of the tube is continuons with the bore 5 ot" the extension, and the said bores communicate on a curve as clearly shown in Figurc 2 so that no impediment is offered to the passage of the liquid.
At the free end 01" the tubular extension 3 there is provided a ball shaped head 6, and it will be noticed by referring to Figure 2 that the bore 5 is choked at the head 6. The extension 3 is toward the concave face of the tube, and at the connection between the extension and the tube the tube is enlarged in a ball-shape as shown at 7.
The extension 3 may be integral with the tube as shown, or it may be detachably connected therewith as may be desired In use, a ho'e 8 as shown in Figure l, may be connected with the head 2 by slipping the end ot the hose over the head, and this hose may lead trom any suitable source of snpply. While the extension 3 hasan oliveshaped tip, it is obvions that any desired tip might be used.
In peration, the improved instrument may be inserted Without the necessity for the person upon whom it is used to recline, and while such person is in sitting position. Neither is it necessary to pass the hand down heneath the closct seat since the stern l is i'igid and serves as a handle'tor handling the tip. It will be observed that the tube l is (IUI'VCCl tor the greater part ot its length froni its junctnre with the tnbnlar extension 3 to lie substantially along` the arc of a Serial No. 499,139.
circle extending throughapproximately 90 and that the tubular extension 3 extends on the concavely cnrved side of the arcuately curved portion of said tube snbstantially at right angles With said tube. The tube l is cnrved for' the remainder of its length reversely to the curvature of the first named portion thereof, Whereby the last named or free end portion of the tube may serve as a handle and is thus adapted to be grasped and manpulated by the user when the latter is in sitting position to permit the convenient and effective use of the device Without there being any necessity of the user passing the hand grasping the tube beneath the closet seat.
Since the portion of the tube l on Which the tubular extension 3 is tormed curves along an are of approximately 90 and the tubular extension 3 extends substantially at right angles to the tube at the inner side of the are, it Will be manifest that an upward pull on the tube Will cause axial movement of the tubular extension in an npward direction also. The tubular extension 3 therefore can be Conveniently and easily moved to and from applied position by the user of the devce while he is in a sitting position.
I claim:
As an article of manufacture, an instrument of the character described comprising a tube having a portion thereof curved substantially along the are of a circle extending through approximately 90 and having a straight tnbular extension at one end of the arcuately curved portion, the bores of the straight tubular extension and the arcnately cnrved portion being continnons one with the other and the straight tubular extension extending on the concavely curved side of the arcuately cnrved portion of said tube substantially at right angles with said tube, the latter also including a portion at the other end of the arc curved reversely to the first named arc, said tube being enlarged externally at the juncture of said straight tubular extension and said arcuately curved portion, to have substantially the shape of a sphere.
