BATTERY TONGS.

Our invention relates to battery tongs adapted to remove the connectors clamped about the terminals of a battery to which the battery leads are secured.
As is well known, after a battery has been used for some timethe terminals become corroded and the connectors become so securely fastened to said terminals that great diliiculty is experienced in removing said connectors whenever it becomes necessary to substitute a new battery or remove the old for the purpose of recharging. With the use of our improved tongs, it is possible in most instances to remove said connectors almost fort.
It is an object of our invention to provide apair of battery tongs in which a pair of relatively movablemembers has associated therewith means for clinching a battery terminal at the top and also at the side, underneath the battery lead is secured, which members when relatively moved will cause said connector to be instantly removed from said terminal.
A further object of our invention is to provide a novel form of battery tongs having a pair of relatively movable members, one of which has associated therewith a stationary jaw and a movable jaw, which movable jaw, when said members are relatively moved is adapted to co-act with said stationary jaw to remove forcibly the electrical connection secured to a battery terminal.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a novel form of battery tongs comprising a pair of relatively movable members, one member of which has associated therewith a stationary element provided with a pair 01 prongs, and also a movable element provided with at least one prong, said prongs, when said members are relatively moved, are adapted to grip the terminal of a. battery to remove forcibly the electrical connection secured to said terminals.
It is also an object of our invention to provide a novel form of battery tongs in which a pair of pivoted members is adapted to be relatively moved so that one of said members may be caused to actuate a movable element associated with the other, to co-ac-t with a stationary element, also associated with said other member, whereinstantly and with scarcely any of connector to which theby when said elements are caused to grip the terminal of a battery, and said members are relatively moved, the electrical conneetor secured to said terminal may be expeditiously and quickly removed.
It is also an object of our invention to provide a pair of tongs in which one member of a pair of relatively movable members is provided with a means for renderingel'i'ective a movable jaw co-acting with a stationary jaw whereby when said mem-' bers are relatively moved said tongs may be caused to remove forcibily the leads from a battery terminal.
A further object ot our invention is to provide a pair of battery tongs comprising a pair of relatively movable members, one of which is provided with a pair of jaws, the other member is provided with means whereby it may be assured that said jaws will forcibly remove the electrical connector secured on a battery terminal.
It is also an object of our invention to provide a pair of battery tongs comprising relatively movable members, one of which has extensions projecting therefrom, one of said extension having associated therewith a means for embracing the terminal of a battery, another of said extensions having a movable means adapted to grip the top of said terminal, said movable means having associated therewith a means for retarding its movement, another of said members also having an extension, which extension has mounted thereon a means, which means, when said members are relatively moved, said movable means is adapted to co-act with said means for en'ibracing said terminal, whereby the electrical connector secured to said terminal may be quickly and expeditiously removed.
It is moreover an object or our invention to provide a novel pair of tongs comprising a pair of pivoted members, one otwhich is equipped with a stationary jaw and a movable jaw, said movable jaw having associated therewith a retarding means, which jaws are also provided with means for clinching an article therebetween, said jaws when said members are relatively moved maybe caused to remove said article from its fixed position.
It is also an object of our invention to provide a novel form of'batter'y tongs which are simple in character, easy and inexpensive to manufacture, du'able, thoroughly practical and efficient in operation, not easy to get out of order, and composed of a minimum number of parts.
Further objects and advantages of our invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds.

Describing our invention more in detail, 1 indicates one of the members of our tongs, which member has formed integral therewith, or secured thereto in any preferred manner, a stationary jaw or extension 3, which extension is bifurcated, forming a pair of prongs 5, said bifurcated portion being adapted to embrace the terminal T of a battery BL It is, of course, understood that the shape of the extension 3 as well as the character of the prongs 5 and the cutaway portion forming the same may be any that is in practice found desirable. The member 1 is also provided with an extension l, either integral therewith or secured thereto in any preferred manner.
The extension t has a passage formed therein in any suitable manner, which passage is adapted to receive the pin or movable element 9, which has a spring or retarding means 10 surrounding the same. Said pin or movable element is screw threaded at one end, which end is adapted to receive the cap or cam member 11. The other end of said pin or movable element 9 has formed integral therewith or secured thereto in any preferred manner a head 12, which forms the active member of the movable jaw of our tongs. "On the head 12 may be formed at least one prong G, which may be associated with said head in any manner found desirable, either integral therewith or secured thereto in any way preferred.
The member 1 is preferably, though not nece sarily, flattened, as indicated at 1%, to provide a bearing surface for the other member 53, which is adapted to be pivoted to the member 1 by any conventional form of bolt or screw indicated at 8, the member 2 being also provided with a complementary fiattened portion 14. It is of course understood that any means for pivoting the two members together may be substituted for that shown. It will be clear that the n'iembers l and 2, forming the grasping means by which the tongs are operated, are in practice of considerable length, so that it will be possible for the user to reach down in a motor vehicle in order that the battery and its terminals may be easily reached.
The member 2 is formed with an extension 7, preferably, though not necessarily integral or secured to said member in any preferred manner. In the form shown, the extension 7 is integral with said member and bent at substantially right angles thereto. Said extension has formed thereon a cam or eccentric surface 13, which surface is adapted to coact with the cam member or ap 11 to provide for an eccentric or alternating movement, the pin or movable element 9 being rendered active when the high portion of said cam surface has been reached as the movable members are operated. it will be clear that the shane of the cam su face 13 and the cam member or cap 11 immaterial.
To provide an additional means tor insuring that the electrical connection to the battery terminal is removed therefron'i, especially when said terminal has been so corroded that the connector is securely fastened thereto, 1 either form integral with the extension 7 or-secure thereto in any preferred manner, a projection 2 which may be tapped by a hammer or other implement, a or our tongs have been applied to the battery terminal.

Vi e claim as our invention 1. In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of members associated for relative movement, a pair of extensions extending from one of said members, one of said extensions being adapted to form a jaw, an element adapted to be reciprocated through the other of said extensions, a jaw on said element, a removable cam member positioned on the other end of said element, a spring also positioned on said element and adapted to be compressed between said second extension and said cam member, and a second cam on said second member cooperating with said cam member whereby when said members are relatively moved said jaws may be made to coact to remove the leads from a battery.
2. In a pair of tongs, in combination, a pair of members associated for relative movement, a pair of extensions extending from one of said members, one of said eX- tensions being provided with a bifurcated portion, the other of said extensions being provided with a passage therethrough, a movable element adapted to be reciprocated through said passage, a head on one end of said movable element, a removable head positioned 011 the other end of said movable element, retarding means associated with said movable element and adapted to act be tween said other extension and said removable head, and an extension projecting from the other of said members co-operating with said removable head whereby when said members are relatively moved said element may be reciprocated against the action of said retarding means.
In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of relatively movable members, one of said members being provided with a pair of prongs adapted to encircle a battery terminal, a movable element also associated with said members and provided with a prong adapted to be forced into said terminal, a cam mounted on the other of said members to engage the movable element, whereby when said members are relatively moved said tongs may be caused to remove forcibly the lead of a battery.

In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of relatively movable members. a bifurcated portion associated with one of said members for embracing the terminal of a battery, a spring-pressed element also associated with said member and adapted to be moved in parallel relation with said member, means on said element adapted to be forcibly engaged withthe top of said ter-' minal, and means positioned on the other of said members whereby when said members are relatively moved said element may be caused to coact with said bifurcated portion to remove forcibly a battery lead.
5. In a pair of battery tongs, in combina tion, a pair of relatively movable members, means associated with one of said. members for engaging the sides ofa battery terminal, means associated with the other of said members for engaging the top of said terminal, and penetrating means associated with said second means for sinking into the top of said terminal when said members are relatively moved.
6. In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of relatively movable members, means associated with one of said members for gripping the side of a battery terminal, means associated with said member for gripping the top of said terminal, and means on the other of said members, free from said second means, and adapted to be oscillated, when said members are relatively moved, to operate said second means.
7 In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of relatively movable members, means associated with one of said members for engaging the sides of abattery terminal, reciprocating means also associated with said member for clinching the top of said te minal, and means integral with the other of said members and free from said reciprocating means for rendering both of said means operative for forcibly removing the lead associated with said terminal.
8. In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of relatively movable members, a stationary jaw associated with one of said members for engaging the sides of a battery terminal, a longitudinally movable jaw also associated with said member for engaging the top of said terminal, and cam means in tegral with the other of said members and free from said longitudinally movable jaw, said cam means, when said members are relatively moved, being adapted to cause said jaws to coact for forcibly removing the lead associated with said battery.
9. In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of relatively movable members, means on one of said members for engaging the sides of a battery terminal, movable movable means also positioned on said member for engaging the top of said terminal, means on the other of said members for rendering both of said engaging means effective when said members are relatively moved, and means on the other of said members for receiving the blow from a hammer or the like to insure that the lead associated with the battery may be removed.
10. In a pair of battery tongs, in combination, a pair of relatively movable members, a
