RAIL FASTENING.
Application led February 3, 1926. Serial No. 85,688.
This invention relates to improvements in railroad ties, particularly concrete ties, and 1t is the principal object of my invention to provide rail fastenings for these ties adapted to absorb the shocks to which they are subjected by the rolling stock Anotherl object of the invention is the provision of a. railroad tie equipped with resilient rail fastening plates particularly well adapted to absorb shocks atswitchcs and crossings.
A further object of the invention is the provision of railroad ties equipped with longitudinally extending shock absorbing means adapted to greatly prolong the life of the tie.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of adjustable fastening means for the rail foot flanges on the tie of ex- 2U trenicly simple and inexpensive construction.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically defined in the appended claim. i
In the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a. top plan View of two railtracks diverging at a switch and equipped with shock absorbing rail fastening means constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof with the rails in section.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
As illustrated on the drawings, particularly in Figures 1, 2 and 3 the rails 10, 11 and 12, 13 of two converging tracks at a switch point are supported by metal plates 1li to which thefoot flanges of the rails are secured by means of a plurality of bolts 15 carrying the customary nuts 16. yThe metal plates are somewhat wider' than the tie 17 to provide for a certain elasticity of support for the rails under the weight of the rolling stock traveling over the rails, and are secured to the tie preferably by means of thev bolts 18 carrying nuts 19.
The ties are of concrete reinforced or strengthened by a plurality of longitudinally extending bars or metal rods 20 having their ends projecting beyond the ends of the ties Vand fastening nuts 21 or the like at these ends secure the rods in place. The rods may be embedded in the concretefof the tie Within suitable tubes such as indicated at 22 or the like. The bolts 18 may extend through the body of the tie and have a lower foot part 23.
The operation of my device will be clearly understood from the above detailed description thereof without further explanation, and it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the general arrangement of the rail fastening and in the construction of the minor details thereof as come Within the scope of the appended claim without in any way deviating from the construction of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,
and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a rail fastening of the 'class described, the combination with a concrete tie, of a plurality of elastic supports for the rails on said ties, each of said supports comprising a foot plate extending beyond both sides of the tie to increase the elasticity of the rail support, means for securing the plates to the ary A.
