HANNAH GREEN GAUNT, OF VIGTORIA,'BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
STOVE-FLUE GL ANING DEVICE.
Application filed April 1, 1924, Serial No. 703,552, and in Canada September 18, 1923.
This invention relates to devices for cleaning the flues of domestic cooking stoves, particularly where soft coal is used for fuel and soot is rapidly formed and deposited within and around the walls of the Hues; such flue cleaning is usually performed by a simple scraper, but with flue scrapers as ordinarily used much nuisance is caused owing to the fine and feathery particles of soot escaping into the room, but with my invention which consists of a scraper in combination with a special mop-like appliance the line soot is collected by the device and prevented from escaping into the apartment.
In the drawings herewith Fig. 1 shows a front view, Fig. 2 a side View, and Fig. 3 an end view of my device. a is a stout wire handle of convenient length and form, secured to a folded flat plate clip 12, within the folds of which are securely clamped and held a flat or nearly flat series of fibre strands c forming a fringe to one of the. scraper edges, somewhat after the fashion of a mop, this fibre fringe is conveniently made from binder twine.
The simplest method of making such a device as shown in the drawing is to take a rectangular pieceof fairly stiff iron or steel plate and fold the same equally about its longer centre line, pierce the double plate for the rivet in the position shown, lay the fibrousstrands between the fold taking care that the strands pass on the inner side of the rivet, the head extremity of the handle is formed into a loop through which the rivet is passed, and the three portions. firmly riveted together, the portion of the scraper head .at the fold being flattened to-provide a scraper edge. f
The method of using the deviceis to immerse theworking end in a pail of water and after shaking off the surplus to pass'the scraper-mop along and about the stove fiues, when the fine particles of soot and'espeoially the filament of soot which usually give the most trouble will readily adhere to the moistened fibre strands and are then easily disposed of by a rapid rinse in the pail of water; this process is repeated a few times depending on the state of the fiues' and the latter are left in excellent condition'for a clear' draught, the process having created littleor no nuisance in the way of dust or soot; the opposite edge of the scraper device is used in the ordinary way in case there should be any pieces of soot adhering to the flue that are not removed by the previous process.
What I claim as myinvention and de sire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A flu-e cleaning device comprising a head formed of a metal plate folded over in U- shaped fashion, a fringe of fibrous strands securely clamped between the opposed walls of said head, the portion of the head at the fold being flattened to provide a scraper edge, and a handle connected to a side wall of said head and extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom.
HANNAH G. GAUNT.
