C. FRANZ DESIGN'COMPOSING AND REPRODUCING DEVICE Filed Sept. l, 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS QM i my@ Patented Oct. 5, 1926.
UNTED CHARLES FRANZ, ornonnis, NEW Yoniz.
DESIGN COMPOSING AND REPBODUCING DEVICE.
Application nien september i, i925. serial No. 53,961.
This invention relates to devices for creating or composing new and original designs or patterns.
The principal object of the present .invention is toprovide a device for creating or composing newand original designs or patterns made up of design elements embodied by blocks or units whic may bev conveniently arranged and rearranged in the de sign or pattern creating operation at the will of a person, and it may be utilized for determining color schemes without unnecessary waste of materials.
Another object of the invention isto provide means of the character described which may be used repeatedly and with which newly created designs or patterns may be reproduced and transferre The nature of the invention and its di stinguishing features and advantages will appear when the followin specification is read in conjunction with t e accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view embodying the features and appurtenances of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially onthe line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a collective view of several blocks or units utilized for obtaining the design or pattern ensemble.
Fig. 4 is a view illustrating an ensemble of blocks embodying a new design or' pattern, and showing one of the tracing papers in position for carrying out the design or pattern reproducing operation. l
Fig. 5 is a view of'a fragment of the tracing paper withthe new design or pattern inscribed thereon.
In accordance with the present invention use is made of a folder 10 which consists of covers 11 and 12 which-are hingedly connectedA as at 13. Arranged on the cover 11 is a chase or frame 14. Use is also made of a multiplicity of blocks or units 15 which may be of different sizes, but each of which is essentially of the same thickness. Certain of the units 15 have printed on one face thereof a design element 16, while certain other of the units 15 are without design elements and are used for filling the spaces between those unts having the design elements thereon. If desired some of the unitsv 15 may have more than one design element 16, that is to say eac/h may have design elements on the opposite faces thereof. It is also to be understood that there will besimilar design tern will be embodied by an ensem elements on a number of units 15 to constitute a group so thatmore than one similar design element may be included in the design or pattern ensemble of the units 15. As shown in Figure 1, the units 15 are arranged at random in the frame 14 and completely fill the space between the sides of the frame.. By removing-the units 15 and rearranging them according ,to the fancy new and original designs or atterns may be created or ,com osed as s own in Figure 4. When the units 15 are arranged in the frame 14 the upper face thereof will be iush with the sides of the frame 14 to resent an even surfacetherewith. A sufficient number of units will be provided so that space or spaces between the units 15 having the .design elements 16 thereon may be filled in to not only prqvide an even surface throughout but to maintain the units 15 having the design elements 16 thereon in the 'desired ensemble. The designelements 16 will be printed so that they may be easily traced, and said design elements may be merelyinoutlineor may be an outline having therein a certain color or combination of colors.
In order that the newly created or comi posed design or pattern ma be reproduced there is provided a plurality ofl sheets of tracing paper 17 which are arranged in folded condition at one side of the frame 14 so that one fold at a time may be arranged Aover the frame 14, as shown most clearly in Figure 4, for carrying out the tracing-- operation. In the present instance thev sheets 17 are held in place by the use of a cord 18 whose opposite ends are attached to the frame 14. If desired the frame 14 may be attached directly to the cover 11, or as in the present instance the frame14 may be removable.
It is to be understood that the folder 10, frame 14, and the units 15 may be made of any referred material, such as stout cardsize and shape with no limit to the number of units to be used.
From the foregoing it will Hbe apparent that means are provided whereby new and original designs or patterns may be created or composed by the use of the units 15 which may be arranged and rearranged at the will of a person in the attainment .of the ,new deor pat-- e of the units which will be maintained for carrying sign or pattern; that the new 'desigi 100 boar and that the units 15 may be of any out a tracing operation; 'and .that color schemes may be, Worked out Without incidental Waste of materials and Without requiring redrawing of-the design or pattern since the newly created design or pattern Will always remain until the units are again rearranged.
I claimi 1. A device of the class described comprising a multiplicity of units of equal thickness, certain of said units having a design element printed on a face thereof, a chase for holding said units, and ,sheets of tracing paper carried by said chase at one side thereof.
2l A device of the class described comprising a multiplicity of units of equal thickness, said units being divided into groups, the
tom for said frame on which the units rest;v
sheets of tracing paper carried by said frame at Ione side thereof, and a tphingedly conl nected to saidv bottom capable of being brought over said frame. CHARLES FRANZ.
