UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
OTTO J. E. PALM, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTAL TRANSFER-SHEETS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 60,224, dated February 23, 1875 application tiled J auuary 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO J. E. PALM, of Oincinnat-i,county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented a Transfer-Striping, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to manufac-- ture a striping by means of the process known as decalcomania or transfer, for lining, strip-- ing, or ornamenting any article, vehicle, conveyance, implement, or manufacture which requires a neat stripe, and to make one sheet of the same answer the purpose of transferring a stripe or line of any desired width, whether oneeighth, one-sixteenth; one-half, or two inches wide; and it consists in a conibination of a transfer or decalcomauia sheet, a a a a, solidly printed or covered with color, or with gold, silver, or metal leaf b b b b, with parallel lines O C O O printed or drawn across the face of the sheet, as shown in the accompanying drawing.
In the figure of the accompanying drawing, a a, a a represent the sheet of transfer or decalcomania paper, the prepared face of which is solidly printed or covered with anyidesirable color, or with gold, silver, or metal leaf, as shown by b b b b. The portion ofthe sheet between a a a a and b b b b may be left blank, and is merely a rim or border. On the surface of the color or leaf thus printed or laid on said paper are printed, drawn, or stamped parallel lines C O O C 0, extending across the portion of the sheet b b b b, or the entire sheet a a a a, as shown by lines C and 0", if desirable, it being optional whether said lines be a sixteenth, eighth, or half inch apart from each other. Said lines may be in any desirable color, different, however, from the color or leaf first printed or laid on said sheet.
By cutting' a strip off the sheet with a scis sors or knife at the line C', a sixteentl1-inch stripe will be secured; by cutting a strip off at line O an eighth-inch stripe; and by cutting a strip at the line O a quarter-inch stripe, Sta-that is, provided the lines are a sixteenth inch apart from each other, as in the drawing. Should the lines be an eighth inch apart, as a matter of course a strip out at O will make a quarter-inch stripe instead of an eighth-inch. Sto.
After having cut the strips the desired width they may be easily and readily transferred to any article or manufacture requiring a neat stripe for nish.
It will be evident that having cut a strip off the sheet at O', the lines C and C will be invisible after having transferred the strip, as they (the lines) will be hidden from view by the color or leaf first printed or laid on the sheet, as above set forth.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, a transferpaper sheet for use in decalcomania, when provided with a ground-color, or a covering of gold, silver, or metal leaf, and having parallel lines printed or otherwise produced upon the face thereof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
