UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
PEMBERTON B. HORTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SADDLE-TREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 160.196, dated February 23, 1875; application file d October 31, 1874.
GAsE No. 2.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PEMBERTON B. Hoa- TON, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Saddle-Tree and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanyingdrawin gs are suffieient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap saddle-tree, which will be strong and durable.
My improvement consists in casting the saddle-tree in a mold out of saw-dust, mixed with glue or other adhesive substance, which will agglutinate the particles into a solid mass.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A is a saddle-tree, which is composed of sawdust and glue compressed into the desired shape in a suitable mold, and covered in the ordinary way with raw-hide or other suitable covering.
Usually I shall make only the side bars and cantle of saw-dust and employ a metal bow, B, for the pommel-pieoe, but in the present case I have constructed the whole of saw-dust. The bow or pommel-piece can be secured to the side bars with screws or rivets when made of metal.
A saddle-tree made of the above described material can be very cheaply manufactured, and will be equally as durable as wood.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A saddle-tree, formed of saw-dust and glue or other agglutinating'agent compressed to the desired shape in a mold, as a new article of manufacture.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
