My invention relates to sewing machines adapted to make Zig Zag stitches and of the general character of the machine described in my former Patent 1,461,428, of July 10, 1923. In the machine of my said former patent the needle guide and loopers are provided with mechanism, by means of which they can be shifted to form zig zag stitches of varying length, or held in the position in which they will form a series of straight stitches, the mechanism, generally speaking, consisting of a vibrating block provided with a pin adjustable in the vibratory center of the block to more distant position, through which pin, when shifted from the vibratory center of the block, the desired vibratory movement is given to the mechanism which in turn vibrates the needle guide and the loopers. In the mechanism of my Q former patent the position of the pin in the vibrating linlcis controlled by a cam formed so that during a portion of the sewing of a button hole the pin is held concentric with the pivot of the block. During another portion of the sewing of the button hole the pin is shifted to aposition where it gives the needles and loopers the vibratory movement-s needed for the sewing or" the Zig zag stitches of the sides of the button hole, and during other portions of the sewing of the button hole the pin is shifted to a position where it gives to the needles and the loopers the vibratory motion needed for the forming of barring stitches at the ends oi the button hole. The object of my present invention is to relieve the pinactuating cam 01 my former machine from the duty of shifting the pin to the barring stitch position and to effect this positioning of the pin by means of a separate and independent cam preferably made adjustable so as to vary the periods during which the machine shall operate in making barring stitches, and my invention consists in the new combination of mechanism by means of which the desired movements are given to the adjustable pin sliding in the vibrating lock.
The nature 01 my improvements will be best understood as described in connection with the drawings which illustrate portions of the machine of my former patent provided with the new improvement in the mechanism for actuating the adjustable pin, and in wh1ch Figure l is a horizontal sectional plan enerally, similar to the right hand portion of Figure 2 of my former Patent 1,461,428, but showing in addition the adjustable cam which constitutes an important feature of my present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation taken as on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and generally similar to Figure 7 of my former patent with a modification in the form of the cam for actuating the pin in the vibrating block.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation taken as on the line 33 of Fig. 1, which View is generally similar to Fig. 7 of my former patent but shows the new adjustable cam and its connections with the mechanism for actuating the pin in the vibrating block.
Figure 4 is an elevation generally simipatent so far as the concerned.

Nhile, asI have before stated, my present invention is partly an improvement on the mechanism shown in my former Patent 1,461,428, in some details of the illustrated mechanism I have varied the modification of the said patented machine shown in my other prior Patent 1,483,185 of February 12, 1924, and so far as the illustrated parts of my improved machine are the same as those of the last mentioned patent, I have used the index letters applied to the same parts in my said patent of February 12, 1924.

F is a gear wheel engaged by the gear D and secured to a shaft F to which is also secured a cam F which engages the forked end F of the vibrating block, more fully described in my Patent 1,-i6l, i28, and here indicated by the symbol r G is a rock shaft carrying at its front end the needle guide G and at its rear end the actuating lever G which is slotted, as indicated at G and has a curved end G which is pivotally connected with a lever arm H, extending out from the rock shaft H which shaft, as described in my former patents, imparts a vibratory movement to the loopers.
T is a shaft to which an intermittent rotary movement is given by mechanism described in my former patents. To this shaft are secured a cam indicated at I, the function of which is described in my former patents, a cam indicated at I which is generally similar to the earn as illustrated in my Patent 1,483,185, except that it has but two operative sections, one here indicated at i which corresponds to the position when a zip; motion given to the needles and loopers for stitching of the sides of the button hole, and another portion, here indicated at 2", which corresponds to the position iven to the needles and loopers when padding stitches are being formed. in my present construction I provide anew cam section on the shaft 1, as shown at T, T, Figure 1, and in detail in i' igures 5, 6, and 7. This cam is made up of two concentric disks T and T, the one secured to and the othe" rotatable on the shaft T. From the disk T extends a pin T which passes through a segmental slot T in the disk T and by means of which, and nut, the two disks can be clamped together in any posi tion that the slot permits them to take. The two disks are similar in conformation, having long and short circular portions indicated at T and T, between which occurs the two depressed portions indicated at T, T.
K' is a lever pivoted at K provided with a cam roller K which engages in the cam l and K is a rod connected with the free end of the lever K and adjustably connected at its upper end with the slot K of the lever arm K which carries on its free end the pin moving in the slot in the block F and extending into the slot G of the lever G K is a pivot on wh a the arm K moves,
which pivot, in the machine described in my former patents, was not adpistable but 1n my present in chine is made adyustable by being attached to a supporting link U and connected at one end of lever U the other end of which is pivoted at K; U is aspring acting to press the lever U downward and U is a cam roller attached to the end of the lever U and resting on the cams T, T, against which it is pressed by the action of the spring U L is a rock shaft actuated as described in my former patents and connected to actuate tic knife holding bar If holding the knife L at its end.
M is the longitudinally movable stop shaft having the buffer stops M and M as described in my Patent l,4:83,185, and carrythe arm list to which is secured the stop ger M which operates in connection with disk D as described in my said patent. is a belt shifting arm attached to the shaft M by which the belt m is shifted between the fast and loose pulleys D and D Pivotally secured on theshaft' M is an arm 1-? carrying the pin N and having an extension N all as described in my said former patent. O is a pivot carrying the locking hook O which is normally pressed to engage the pin N" 7y the spring 0 N as in my former patent, is a support for the spring I? whichv acts to press the arm N upward.
The operation of the described parts of my machine is precisely the same as described in my Patent 1,483,185, except that the cam 1 has inmy present machine only the duty of shifting, the pin K from a-point where it coincides with the pivot of the vibrating block F to a point at the proper distance from said pivot for the making of the stitches formed in the sides of the button hole. Thus, so long as the cam roller on the link K is in contact with the cam surface 2'" the needles and loopers will be held stationary while they form the padding stitches indicated, at Vi in Fig. 8, and while the cam roller is in contact wi h the cam. surface 2', the zig stitches at i in Fig, 8, will be formed. The duty of shifting the pin K to a position in which the needles and ioopers will be vibrated to form the barri stitches indicated at N and W in Fig; 0, is, in my present machine, imposed on the cams T, T which, at properly timed intervals with regard to the sewing or the button hole-,permit the spring U to move the lever U and the connected pivot supporting link U downward so as to depress the pivot K turning the arm fi on its pivotal connection with the link K as a fulcrum and shifting the pin K in the vibrating block to a point more distant from its vibrating center.
The number of bar stitches to taken at p the ends of the button hole is determined by the relative adjustment or the cam disks T, T, which, when adjusted as shown in Figure 7 are not operative as cams. In this adjustment there will be no barring stitches formed while, as adjusted in Fig. 5, it will be seen that the barring stitches will be formed.
The button hole, as illustrated in Fig. 8, has first "formed the row 01" padding stitches indicated at W On the completion of these stitches the cam I is turned to a point where the cam roller will rest on the cam surface 2', shitting the pin K from the vibrating center of the block F and, at the same time, the cam roller U is permitted to move down into one of the depressions T of the cams T, T, thus, by the mechanism described, shifting the pin K still further away from the vibrating center of the block F so that the group of barring stitches indicated at W in liigure 8 is formed. As the cam made up of the disks T, T, revolves to a point where the cam roller U is raised on to the surface T the pin K is shifted back to the position determined by the cam I and the rows of zig zag stitches indicated at Vi are formed and as these stitches reach the end of the button hole the cam roller U passes into a recess T of the cam disks T, T, again shifting the pin 1 7 to a point more distant from the vibrating center of the block F so that the barring stitches inclicated at W are formed, after which the machine is automatically stopped.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. In a sewing machine adapted to form zig zag stitches having a vibratory guide for the needles and a vibratory device for shifting the loopers and means for operating said vibratory mechanism including a pivoted cam actuated vibratory block and a pin movable in said block to and from its pivotal center by means of which, when it is moved from said center, vibratory motion of greater or less extent is given to the needle guide and looper shifting mechanism, the combination therewith of means including an actuating cam for shifting the pin to and from the pivotal center of the vibrating block and means including a separate actuating cam for shifting the pin to a point in the vibrating blockmore distant from its pivotal center.
2. In a sewing machine adapted to form Zig zag stitches having a vibratory guide for the needles and a vibratory device for shitting the loopers and means for operating said vibratory mechanism including a pivoted cam actuated vibratory-block and a pin movable in said block to and from its pivotal center by means of which, when it is moved from said center, vibratory motion bf greater or less extent is given to the needle guide and looper shifting mechanism, the combination therewith of means including an actuating cam for shifting the pin to and from the pivotal center of the vibrating block and means including a separate actuating cam, adjustable as to its period of operation, for shiftin the pin to a point in the vibratory bloc-k more distant from its pivotal center.

In a sewing machine adapted to form zig zag stitches having a vibratory guide for the needles and a vibratory device for shifting the loopers and means for operating said vibratory mechanism including a pivoted cam actuated vibratory block and a pin movable in said block to and from its pivotal center by means of which, when it is moved from said center, vibratory motion of greater or less extent is given to the needle guide and looper Shifting" mechanism, the combination therewith of means for shifting the pin in the vibrating block comprising a pin supporting arm, an adjustable pivot for said arm, means pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of said arm to ac tuate it to move the pivot from the pivotal center of the vibrating block including an actuating cam, and means for independently shifting said pinin the block including an independent cam connected to shift the pivotal support of the arm and thereby turn the pin carrying arm on its intermediate pivotal connection.
4. In a sewing machine adapted to form zig za stitches having a vibratory guide for the needles and a vibratory device for shiiting the loopers and means for operating said vibratory mechanism including a pivoted cam actuated vibratory block and a pin movable in said block to and from its piv otal center by means of which, when it is moved from said center, vibratory motion 0t greater or less extent is given to the needle guide and looper shifting mechanism, the combination therewith of means for shifting the pin in the vibrating block comprising a pin supporting arm, an adjustable pivot for said arm, means pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of said arm to'actuate it to move the pivot from the pivotalcenter of the vibrating block including an actuating cam, and means for independently shifting said pin in the block including an independent cam, adjustable as to its period of operation, connected to shift the pivotal support of the arm and thereby turn the pin carrying arm on its intermediate pivotal connection.
5. In a sewing machine having the features of claim 2, the construction of the adjustable cam made up of two concentric and relatively rotatable cam faced disks by adjusting which the periods of dwell of the pin in its more distant position in the vibrating block can be varied in duration.
