Description

Oct. 5 ,1926. 1,601,718
- J. R. BUTTWEILER S NOW PADDLE Original Filed May 18. 1925 I am Patented Oct. 5, 1926.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. BUTTWEILER, OF MELROSE, MINNESOTA.
SNOW PADDLE.
Application filed May 18, 1925, Serial No. 31,022. "Renewed March 5, 1926.
The device formingthe subject matter of this application is a rotary member adapted to be used upon snow plows, for instance, as a part of the snow plow shown in my Patent No. 1,521,172, issued to me in the year 1924. The invention aims to provide a rotary member, the arms of which are flexible and weighted, so that they will be peculiarly eflicient in removing snow, a
knocking effect being produced upon the snow, which enhances the efliciency of the device greatly.
It it within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that sortto which the invention appertains.
lVit-h the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combinaion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the in vention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figurel shows in elevation, a device construced in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a fragmental plan disclosing one of the arms; Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a cross section on the line 4--4 of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the operation of the device; Figure 6 is a fragmental elevation showing a modification.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a rotatable member 1. The rota table member 1 includes a hub 2 whereby the rotatable member may be mounted on a shaft (not shown). radial arms 3. The outer end of each arm 3 is disposed between resilient members 4. The members 4 are secured to the outer end of the arm 3 by attaching elements 5. Be-
The hub 1 has rigid tween the outer ends of the members 4 a weight 6, preferably made of metal, is disposed. The weight 6 is spaced from the outer end of the arm 3. The weight 6 is held between the out-er ends of the members 4 by securing elements 7.
In practical operation, when the member 1 is rotated, the elements 4 will flex, as
shown in Figure 5, one of the members 4 being elongated as at 8, and the other of the members 4 being compressed as at 9. Owing to the fact that the members 4 are flexible and resilient, and since they carry the weight 6, a beating or paddling effect will be produced on the snow, and the snow will be loosened and driven to one side. I
In Figure 6 of the drawings, parts hereinbefore described have been designated by numerals previously used, with the suflix a. In the modification delineated in Figure 6, the weight 6 is provided with a brush 10, preferably made of steel, and possessing some resiliency, the brush 1O adding a sweeping effect to the beating or paddling function.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is '1. In a device of the class described, a rotatable member including rigid arms, weights aligned with the arms, and flexible resilient connections uniting the weights with the outer ends of the arms.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a rotatable member having a rigid outstanding arm, a weight spaced from the outer end of the arm, flexible resilient members between which the outer end of the arm and the weight are disposed, and means for ture.
