METAL VALVE FOR BORED-WELL BUCKETS.
Application fded. January 19, v1926. SeriaLN'o. 82,372.
The invention relates tovalves for buckets for drawing water from bored wells and discharging water from-the bucket and has for its obj ect the provision of a valve as applied to such buckets the valve being arranged in the bottom of the bucket and adapted to unseat when lowered into the well to fill the bucket, said valve having a stem to which is hingedly secured a rod eX- tending to the top of the bucket for actuating the valve to open it to discharge the contents thereof, said stem being also threaded and having adjustably mounted thereon an interiorly threaded tube that is adapted to be adjusted to enable moving the valve by pressure against the bottom of the container into which the contents of the bucket are to be discharged.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly in section, of a bored well bucket, sho-wing the improved valve applied thereto,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional View on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1, the valve being shown in elevation,
Figure 3 is a similar view, the valve being shown in section, and
Figure 4, a bottom plan View.
In the drawings similar reference char* acters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved valve is shown in connection with a conventional bored well bucket comprising a casing 1 that is, as shown, relatively long, and of a restricted diameter to fit a well boring, and having a bail 2 to which a cable or other flexible member may be secured for lowering the bucket into the well.
The bottom 3 of the bucket is spaced upwardly from the lower edges of the side walls of the bucket by means of a cuff or sleeve 4 secured to the bottom 3 and the lower edges of the side walls of the bucket, thus forming a recess 5 in the bottom of the bucket to receive the cage of the valve, to be hereinafter described. The bottom 3 is provided with an opening 6 with the edges of the bottom surrounding the opening bent downwardly as shown at 7. The valve for closing the opening 6 comprises a disk 8 carrying packing 9 and a cage 10 seated in tube or sleeve 16. The lower edge of the. v
cage 10 has an outwardly directed flange 17 that is adapted to engage the inner edge of the 'downwardly inclined portion 7 to limit. the upward movement of the valve in opening.
In use it will be apparent that when the bucket 1 is lowered into a well., the valve 8 will open because of the weight of the bucket and admit water to the interior of the bucket and the pressure of the water in the well, and that when the bucket is raised the valve will close to hol-d the contents of the bucket therein. In discharging water from the bucket the valve may be opened by pulling upwardly on the rod 15 or when the tube 16 is .adjusted in the position shown in Figure 3, the contents of the bucket may be discharged by seating it on the bottom of a receptacle to receive its contents, the valve being opened by pressure of' the lower end of tube 16 against the bottom. It will be apparent that by having these two means for discharging water from the bucket that the bucket may be used by stockmen and others desiring to discharge all of the contents at one time when the tub-e or sleeve 16 is in the position shown in Figure 8, while for household use where only a portion of the contents of the bucket is to be discharged the use of the rod 15 will accomplish this purpose.
Vhat is claimed is A bored well bucket comprising a casing, a bottom on said casing and having an opening therein, a valve adapt-ed to -close said opening, a cage on said valve slidably engaging the walls of the opening, a threaded stem 0n the valve, .a rod hingedly engaging said stem, and an interiorly threaded tube engaging the stem and adjustable thereon for' the purpose stated.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
