BRUSH FOB VACUUM CLEANERS.
Application Jed June 22, 1925. Serial No. 88,610.
My linvention relates to an improvement The suction inlet D extends from t-he nozin vacuum cleaners and particularly to zle to a substantially cylindrical projection vacuum cleaner casings or nozzles having E from the center of the fan casing, the axis fixed brushes attached thereto. One object of the said projection E being upwardly inis .the provision of a nozzle, adapted for use clined in relation to the horizontal axis of 60 with a fixed brush, which is shaped for conthe motor and fan casings. venient 'insertion into corners and beneath G G are a pair of brush elements, each of overhanging furniture. Another object is which is formed of a strip of wood or any the postioning of the brush for maximumA other suitable material into which are set a te convenience of insertion and; removal. plurality of bristle groups G2. G6 is te ings whereina'metal sheath for the brush body. The 70 Figure l is a side elevation of the casing arcuate spring yokes are secured to the brush with the supplemental suction inlet in place; elements G, for example by the hollow Figure 2 is a view from below of the sucrivets G4 and rotation of the yokes in relation nozzle with the brush secured thereto; tion to the spring elements is prevented by I0 Figure 3 is an enlarged section on the line the additional pins or securing means G5. 75

The use and operation of my invention A is a motor casing adapted to contain a are as follows: motor rotatable on ahorizontal axis, the I provide a vacuum cleaner casing comaxis being substantially perpendicular to the a prising the usual three elements, inlet no z- 30 Suction nozzle. v A1 is a handle bail and A2 zle, fan casing and motor casing. I project the handle vwhereby the vacuum cleaner may the inlet nozzle substantially forwardly be moved across the floor. from the fan casing, of which it is, how- B is a bracket supported at the bottom ever, an integral part. The fan casing and of the rear of the motor casing A. Pivoted suction nozzle form preferably, but not necto it is the roller supporting lever B1 tofthe essarily, a unit casting. I mount support- 9o opposite end of which is rotatably secured ing rollers -beneath the fan casing and an the supportin roller B2. Bs is an adjusting adjustable rear supporting roller 4beneath screw adapte to adjust the heighty of the the motor. The nozzle projects substanroller B2 in relation tothe motor casing. tially forwardly from both fan casing and r C is a fan casing to which the motor casroller supports and the ends of the nozzle 95 ing is secured, for example by the screws project laterally far beyond the rollersand C1. C2 is a peripheral exhaust outlet to the casing. The resultant nozzle is formed which is secured the dust bag C". d C4 is any and positioned forl easyy insertion into the suitable lbracket toward the bottom of the very corners of a room and may easily be passed beneath furniture. The relative po- 100 the fixed supporting roller C?, it being unsition of the inlet nozzle, the xed fan casderstood that there is a bracket and a roller ing rollers and 'the adjustable rear roller is at either side of the bottom of the fan casing. such that a relatively small movement of D is a suction inlet terminatin in an exthe rear adjustable roller is sucient to ef- 50y tended 'suction nozzle D1 with t e slightly fect a substantial upward or downward 10.5

The brush odies 110 G of wood or fiber may be surrounded by a metal casing and the springs G3 are gripped to and through brush body and casing, for example by the eyelets G4. Since ll use two of the arched supporting springs, and since the brush is likely to be tilted or rotated about the one or the other of the two springs, l provide a supplemental fastening G5 to hold the spring arches against rotation about the securing eyelets.
l claim:
1. ln combination with a Vacuum cleaner having a comparatively open elongate suction nozzle, a detachable brush comprising a pair of narrow brush bodies `adapted to be positioned one in front of the forward lip of the nozzle, and one to the rear of the rearward lip of the nozzle, a plurality of gripping members joining the two brush bodies, each such member comprising in monete part an arcuate spring portion adapted to penetrate the interior ofthe suction inlet, and to be compressed between the opposed walls of the inlet, and to direct a gripping pressure outwardly thereagainst, and means for preventing the rotation of said spring portions in relation to said brush bodies.
2. The combination with a vacuum cleaner casing having a narrow, laterallyl extended suction nozzle, of a brush, adapted to be secured to such nozzle, securing means therefor, comprising springs formed and adapted to penetrate the interior of the suction inlet, and to be compressed between the opposed walls of the inlet and to direct a gripping pressure outwardly thereagainst.
