Divided and this application filed December The form of my invention hereinafter described is embodied in a revolutioncounting and stop mechanism which is claimed in my original application Serial No. 39,160, of which this case is a division.
Said mechanism was designed for use in the manufacture of coated webs, such as carbon paper for billing, duplicating and adding machines. Such fabrics are sold in units of seventy-five lineal feet, but in rolls containing from one to twelve pieces, arranged as parallel plies, in accordance with the kind of machine in which they are to be used, but the length of each piece should be aliquot to such unit length. Therefore,
it is highly desirable to have means to limit the cutting of such fabrics to the precise aliquot lengths required, to avoid waste of the materials; and the object and effect of my invention are to provide such means.
As hereinafter described; a convenient- I enibodiment of my invention is accessory to a roller, hereinafter termed the measuring roller, over which such fabric 1s so progressed as to revolve that roller in accordance with the length of the fabric passed thereover. That accessory device includes an index dlal, connected with said roller,
by suitable gearing; so that the passage ,of
each such unit length of fabric effects one revolution of said dial. Said dial is arranged as the terminal of one side of an electric circuit and provided with. a plurality of concentric circular series of electric contact pins; for instance in the'form illustrated, there are twelve such series, re-.

dial, in accordance with the position to. which-said slide bar is set. In said embodiment of my invention; said electric circuit includes a source of current and an electromagnetic tripping device for a clutch, herein claimed, which is part of the mechanism for progressing saidfabric over said measuring roller and between shears so that it may be cut the proper length, when stopped, each time the circuit is closed as aforesaid.
That form of my device also includes convenient means enabling the operator to readily reset the tripping mechanism and clutch to their normal operative positions,
and my invention includes the Various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.

In said figures; the measuring roller 1 is mounted to rotate in a suitable frame of respective series. Each contact pin 9 on said contact dial 7 is arranged to cooperate with the single spring terminal 10 which is arranged as the terminal of the opposite side of said circuit with which it is connected by the conductor 12. Said terminal 10 is conveniently mounted on the slide bar 13 which carries the insulating base 1% to which the upper end of said terminal 10 is rigidly connected. Said slide 13 is vertically adjustable and may be secured by the set screw 15, in the bearing 16 which is supported by the machine frame 2, in any convenient manner. It is to be understood that the arrangement is such that said-terminal 10 may be presented in registry with any one of the twelve series of pins so that said device is operative to close said electric circuit by contact of said terminals 9 anal 10, any number of times from one to twelve, during each revolution of said dial T, in accordance with the position to which said slide bar-13 is set, in the radial guide bearinf; 16. As shown in 1, said slide 13 is set in its uppermost position, with the upper edge of the bearing 16 in registry with the graduation 12 on said slide, which thus presents said terminal 10 in registry wi'h the twelve terminals 9 in the outermost circular series on said dial 7, so that, as thus adjusted, said device is operative to close said electric circuit by contact of said terminals 9 and 10 twelve times during a single revolution of said dial 7.
Said electric circuit, comprising said conductors S and 12, includes the source of current 18 and the electromagnetic tripping device 19, as diagrammatically indicated in Fig. i. As iiu'licated in Fig. 111; said tripping device 19 comprises the electronnignet '20 which is rigidly mounted in the casing 21, below the armature which is pivota ly connected with said casing at its left hand end and conveniently by cone pointed screws in the opposite walls of said casing 21, which are parallel with the plane of section of Fig. III, and said armature is normally upheld in the position shown in Fig. 111 by a suitable spring 23. armature 22 is engaged by the movable latch 25 which is pivoted at its upper end to said casing and has a suitable notch engaging the pin 26, projecting from the tripping lever 27 which is fulcrumed at 28 in said casing 21 and normally upturned to the po sition shown in Fig. 111 by the spring 50.
In the normal position of the parts shown in Figs. III and IV; said tripping lever 27 extends beneath the hook link 31 which then engages, in its notch 32, the stop pro jection 3% on the frame 2. Said link 31 is carried by the clutch shifting yoke 35 which is fulcrumed at 36 and operatively connected with the grooved hub 38 of the cone clutch member 89. Said clutch mem- In that position; said ber 39 is connected with a suitable electric motor or other means for driving the fabric feed roller 10; which latter may be either directly or indirectly connected with the complementary conical clutch member 11; so that, when the parts are in the position shown in Ill and 1V; said roller 40 is rotated to progress the fabric -12 which is to be measured as aforesaid.
The construction and arrangement above described are such that whenever said electric circuit is closed to energize said electron'iagnet 20; said armature 22 is drawn down below the end of said latch thus permitting the latter to be swung to the left by said pin 26 on the tripping lever 27 as said lever 27 is drawn down under tension of said spring 30; thus said tripping lever 27 is tilted by its spring 30 to trip said hook link 31 out of engagement with said projection 32, shown in Fig. IV. Thereupon, said clutch member is axially shifted, to the right in Fig. IV, by the spring 43 connected with the arm 15 on said yoke 35, to thus disconnect said feed roller it) from its driving mechanism and stop the progression of the fabric 11 through the machine after a predetermined length of such fabric has been passed over said measuring roller 1; such length being variably predetermined by the adjustment of said terminal 10. That is to say; each measured length of the fabric l1 may correspond with from one twelfth of a revolution of said dial 7, up to a complete revolution thereof. However, the dimensions specified are merely convenlent to satisfy the trade demands for the multiple carbon paper rol s aforesaid, and it is obvious that the relations of the measuring roller and dial may be differentin accordance with the units of measurement desired.

Said chain has the branch 51 connected its upper end with the arm 52 of said yoke I35, and is of such length that the first effect of depressing said pedal 17 is to reset said yoke to the position shown in Fig. IT with its hook lever E1 engaged with said frame projection 32, so as to detain the clutch device in position to rotate said roller 1, until the tripping operation aforesaid is repeated. Although I have found it convenient to employ my improved magnetically controlled clutch mechanism with the contact dial mechanism aforesaid; it is to be understood that it may be used in conjunction with other means for initiating its operation.
Therefore, I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement heerin set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In revolution counting and stop mechanism; the combination with a measuring roller; of driving mechanism for said roller, including a clutch mechanism comprisinga spring normally tending to release sa d clutch, and a hook arranged to hold said clutch in operative position until tripped; an electromagnetic tripping lever; and a resetting device, including a pedal lever and a chain extending from said pedal lever; a spring normally upholding said lever by said chain; and two branches of said chain respectively operatively connected with said clutch hook and with said tripping lever; said chain branch connected with said tripping lever being slacker than said branch connected with said hook, and including a its initial normal position shown in Fig-V spring; whereby downward movement of said pedal lever first resets said clutch and its hook, in operative position, and thereafter resets said tripping lever.
2. In revolution counting and stop mechanism; the combination with a measuring roller; of driving mechanism for said roller, including a clutch mechanism comprising a spring normally tending to release said clutch, and a hook arranged to hold said clutch in operative position until tripped;
an electromagnetic tripping lever; and a resetting device, including a flexible connector; two branches of said connector, respectively operatively connected with said clutch hookand with said tripping lever; said branch connected with said tripping lever being slacker than said branch connected with said hook, and including a spring; whereby resetting movement of said connector first resets said clutch and its hook, in operative position, and thereafter resets said tripping lever.

including a clutch mechanism comprising a spring normally tending to release said clutch, and a .hook arranged to hold said clutch in operative position until tripped; a tripping lever; and a resetting device, including a flexible. connector; two branches of said connector; respectively operatively connected with said clutch hook and with said tripping lever; said branch connected with said tripping lever including a spring; whereby reset-ting movement of said connector first resets said clutch and its hook, in operative position, and thereafter resets said tripping lever.

The combination with a clutch mecha nism comprising a spring normally tending to release said clutch, and a hook arranged I to hold said clutch in operative position until tripped; of an electromagentic tripping lever; and a resetting device, includ ing a pedal lever and a chain extending from said pedal lever; a spring normally upholding said lever by said chain; and two branches of said chain respectively operatively connected with said clutch hook and with said tripping lever; said chain branch connected with said tripping lever being slacker than said branch connected with said hook, and including a spring; whereby downward movement of said pedal lever first resets said clutch and its hook, in operative position, and thereafter resets said tripping lever.
5. The combination with a clutch mechanism comprising a spring normally tending to release said clutch, and a hook arranged to hold said clutch in operative position until tripped; of an electromagnetic tripping lever; and a resetting device, including a flexible connector; two branches of said connector, respectively operatively connected with said clutch hook and with said tripping lever; said branch connected with said tripping lever being slacker than said branch connected with said hook, and includ-' ing a spring; whereby resetting movement of said connector first resets said clutch and its hook, in operative position, and thereafter resets said tripping lever.
6. The combination with a clutch mechanism comprising a spring normally tending to release said clutch, and a hook arranged to hold said clutch in operative position until tripped; of a tripping lever; and a reset ting device, including a flexible connector; two branches of said connector, respectively operatively connected with said clutch hook and with said tripping lever; said branch connected with said tripping lever including a spring; whereby resetting movement of said connector first resets said clutch and its hook, in operative position, and thereafter resets said tripping lever.
7. The combination with a clutch mecha nism comprising means normally tending to release it, and a detent arranged to hold it in operative position until tripped; of movable tripping means; and a resetting device, including aconnector having two branches respectively operatively connected with said detent and with said tripping means; whereby resetting movement of said connector resets said clutch and its detent in operative position, and resets said tripping means.
