UNITED sr ROSCOE G. JONES, OF JEFFERSON NEW YORK. v
NEEDLE.
Application filed March 4, 1926. Serial 1\To. 92,391.
. 5 The general object of my invention is to provide a. novel needle for the indicated purpose which can be produced cheaply and whereby'the threading of the needle isfacilitated and a form given the needle to adapt it for useas an advertising novelty.
' More specifically, the invention has for its object to form needles from a flat metal strip;
' Reference is to be had to the accompany- 1 ing drawings forming apart of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a threaded needle formed in accordance with my invention; 7
Figure 2 is a plan view 'of the needle somewhat enlarged;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section onthe line 33 of Figure 2. r
In practice the needle is formed with a flat body 10 the front end of which is tapered to provide a point 11.
The rear end of the needle is formed with concave flanges 12 at the sides, said flanges convergent toward the extreme rear end of the needle to produce an eye 13 through which a sewing cord 14 may be passed rearwardly. In practice, after the cord has been passed rearward'ly through the eye 13 y a suitable knot as at 15 is formed in the cord which knot wedges in the needle beneath the convergent flanges 12. i I The making of the needle from a flat strip of metal in the manner described lends 40 itself to quantity production. The flat sides a of the body '10 are adapted in practice to rejceive any suitable advertisement.
I would state furthermore that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of -my'invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention.
7 Having thus described my invention, I claim: :7 or As a new article of manufacture a needle formed of a flat body having one end pointed and having its longitudinal edges at the other end curved upwardly and inward- 1y to form flanges, saidv flanges meeting at the end of the body to form an eye andthen diverging continuously from their point of meeting to the edges of the body forming a tapering passage with a V- shaped opening in its top, whereby the. threading of the needle is facilitated and a surface free from abrupt projections is imparted to the needle to facilitate its passage through the fabric being sewed oscoe c. JONES. I
