SHOE AND PROCESS OF MA KING SAME.
Application filed October 2, 1925. Serial No; 60,014.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements ina shoe and the process of making the same, and has for its primary object to provide a shoe of unique and novel construction.
Another object of the invention is to produce a shoeor other piece of footwear, having the upper laced or braided to the sole thru the medium of a braided flange. A furtherobject of the invention is to provide a process for producing a shoe which consists of 'first slitting the sole around its edge to produce a relatively thin lip, then perforating the lip, then lacing or braiding the strips of material to make a plaited-like flange around the sole, then attaching the upper by lacing or braiding strips of material thru the upper and the braided flange.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a shoe or similar piece of footwear having a braided flange plaited to a lip carried by the sole, and an upper laced or braided to said flange.
-With'these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which thisinvention appertains may under stand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings 5 forming a part of .this application, in
WhiCh:-
Fig. l is a fragmentary edge view of the sole, showing the perforated lip.
. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary transverse sec- 40 tion thereof.
. a E ortio n of an upper fastened to the sole.
ig. 6- is a side elevation of a complete shoe on a reduced scale.-
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 1 0 represents the sole of ashoe, the material of which is slit around its edge to provide a lip 11' and a channel "12,
and said lip is provided with a number of perforations 13. this lip may be formed entirely around the sole or around any portion thereof, according to the type of shoe to be manufactured.
Next, a strip or'braid of material 14 is placed in the channel 12, so as to partially cover the outer face of the lip 11, and there- It is to be understood that fore said braided strip of material 14,
should be slightly above the perforations 13 1n said lip, and if found desirable, the strip of material 14 may be fixed to the lip by an adhesive, so as to be permanently or temporarily held in place during subsequent operations.
Two braids, laces or strips of material 15 and 16 are then braided, woven or plaited about the edge of the lip 11 by first inserting one of the strips, as 15, thru one of the perforations 13;in the lip 11 carrying it across the strip 14, then over the edge of the lip, and again threading it thru the second succeeding perforation, leaving alternate perforations unoccupied, and thru one of these latter is threaded the other braid or strip of material 16, which is then threaded thru the loop or stitch made by the other braid or strip of material, and then carried over the edge of the lip and thread ed thru the next succeeding unoccupied perforation. This operation is continued until a braided or plaited flange 17 of any desirable length is produced. For instance; this flange may extend entirely around the sole or it may extend around only that portion which makes the toe of the shoe, according to the desires of the manufacturer or the style of shoe which is to be produced. j
After the braided or plaited flange is formed an upper 18 is fastened in place by passing a braid, lace or strip of material 19 thru perforations 20 and thru the loops or plaits of the flange 17. I
In actual practice the several braids, laces or strips of material may be of the same color as the upper or of some other contrasting color, and all of the braids may be of the same or different colors, so that numerous color combinations can be provided, but where the braids that makeup braided flange 17 are of one color, then the strip or 'braid 14; should be of a similar color, as this is merely utilized for covering the raw or unfinished surface of the lip','-so that said unfinished surface will not be visible between thedifl'erent strands of the braids'or laces.
While the stripsv of material, braids or laces are generally of leather, and whlle this is preferable, I do not wish to be limited to this particular material.
From the foregoing description it will be particularly noted that I. have provided a shoe of unique and novel construction which eliminates the use of all ordinary stitching for attaching an upper to a sole. Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be variediwithin the limits of the ,appendedclaims without de-- parting from t e spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. A shoe comprising a sole, said sole being slit around its edge to provide a lip, said lip having perforations therein, two
strips of materal laced about the lip and thru the erforations therein, and woven together to provide a braided flange, an upper having perforations therein and a strip of material laced thru the perforations in the said li upper'in' place. 2. A shoe including a sole, therefrom by slitting the edge, thereof,
having perforations therethru, a
upper and the loops of the braided flange to fasten sai I 4 a lip produced two other strips of material threaded thru the loops" of the braided i.
flange and thru the perforations in the upper to secure the later in place.
3. The process of making a shoe which consists in slitting the'edge of a sole so as y to form a thin lip, then braiding two strips 'of material on said lip by interweaving them and passing them thru perforations in the lip, and then weaving a strip of material thru the first mentioned woven stri'p and thru perforations on an upper.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aflixed my signature. 1
