SHARPENING DEVICE.
Application filed October '17, 1925. Serial No. 63,070.
This invention relates to an improved device, particularly adapted for sharpening knives, scissors, and the like, the same having particular reference to a device of this kind which is constructed to permit it to be supported on a kitchen table, shelf or the like, so that it may be readily accessible and conveniently used from time to time to keep the knives in good order.
My principal object is to generally improve upon inventions of this kind by provid ng one of comparative simplicity and durability, which may be readily placed in position for use, one which is convenient and easy to manipulate, and which is such in constructionas to permit it to be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the fol lowing description and drawing.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in whioh like numerals are employed to deslgnate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a knife sharpening device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same showing the approximate manner of mounting the device upon a table top or similar support.
In carrying out the inventionl provide a single metal strip, the same being adapted for vertical disposition as shown in the drawing and being bifurcated at its top to pro vide a pair of outwardly diverging guide fingers 1. These fingers are substantially duplicate in design and have their inner opposed edges bowed longitudinally as shown plainly in Figure 1. These fingers are of a size to serve as effective mountings for a pair of rotary sharpening discs 2. It is understood, of course, that these discs are not in any sense freely rotatable, but as they wear from constant use, the constant pressure of the knife blade thereon turns them with respect to each other to bring into playnew and unworn sharpening surfaces.
The strip of metal referred to is bent to form novel means for mounting the device upon a table, or the like, 3. More specifically, the strip is bent as at 4 below the sharpening means, being directed at a right'angle, bent upon itself as at 5, and then down at a right angle as at 6, thus forming a clamping jaw 7. The lower end of the strip is bent inwardly on a horizontal line as at 8 to provide the lower complemental jaw. Through this part 8 a thumb screw 9 is threaded, and a swiveled head is carried by the inner end of this screw and is adapted to engagethe bottom of the table as shown in Figure 2. In this way the device may be firmly clamped on a table, shelf, or other equivalent support, after which the knife blade will be placed between the peripheral edges of the two discs and drawnback and forth to put a sharp cutting edge upon the same.
From the foregoing description and drawing it is obvious that I have evolved and produced a simple and inexpensive device for sharpening scissors and knivesin an efficient manner. The construction is quite simple as it is believed that by considering the description in connection with the drawings, a clear comprehension of the invention will be had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is deemed unnecessary. While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described it is to be understood that minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired. V
l-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim as new is As a new article of manufacture, a, sharpening device for knives, scissors and similar articles comprising a stamped metal strip provided at one end with a pair of outwardly diverging guide fingers, said fingers being gradually decreased in width from their innor toward their outer ends and having curved edges opposed to each other, the intermediate portion of said strip being bent at right angles to the body portion, being returned to provide superposed plies forming a clamping jaw, the lower end portion of the strip being bent downwardly to extend in alignment with the aw carrying portion, and
terminating in a laterally bent end disposed in parallelism with said first named jaw, a pair of turnable sharpening discs mounted for rotation upon the intermediate portions of the fingers at points opposite each other with their peripheral edges in abutting relation, and a clamping screw carried by the laterally bent lower ends of said metal strips.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
LAWRENCE w. ANDERSON.
