ADJUSTABLE seen-n SUP-PORT;
A plicationfll'ed Jane 6,
The invention relates to adjustable-shade supports, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprisin "weight members slidably mounted on para lel rods on opposite sides of a window frame, and provided with means forreceiving pintlesof a shade. One of the parallel rods of one side of window is rotatablymounted within the. adjacent weight member, and has its upper end provided with'a gear connection with a horizontally disposedidrum carrying shaft, which shaft is provided with; drums over' the weight members; and with' flexible connections between the drums and weight members whereby upon rotation of the rotatable parallel rod, the weight members will be simultaneously raised or'a'llowed to-lower.
A-furth'er object is to provide a rotatable bevelled gear'in a casinga'dj acentthe lower end of the rotatable p'arallel'ro'd' and which bevelled gear meshes with a bevelled gear carried by said rod; said first mentioned bevelled gear being provided with means-for receiving a Wrench forrotating' the same.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts asherein'a'fter set forth shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes 1n the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an enlarged front elevation of the device, showing the same applied to facings of a window frame, andthe covers removed from the casings of the device to better illustrate the structure.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of one of the weight members.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device showing the same applied to a conven tional form of window frame.
Figure at is a detail sectionalview taken on line 1-4: of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a modified form of gear drive for the horizontally disposed drum ishaft, showing worm gears. I
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of window frame and 2 the facings at opposite sides thereof. Secured to the facings 2 adjacent their lower ends are casings 3 and 4, which casings are connected to casings 5 and 6 1924'. serial No; 71812491 adjacent the upper end's'of the facings'2 by I means of parallel rods 7 and 8, which are vertically disposed; The rods 7 have their ends provided with nu'ts9 for rigidly hol din'g the sa'ine, however the rod 8 is rotatably mounted in bearings 10 of the casings and 6, and has its lower end provided with a bevelled gear 11, with'whi'ch a bevelled geal- 12' carried by fa horizontallydisposed shaft 13 meshes. It will-be seen that when a socket wrench is placed inthe socket 14: in
bevelled gear '17 carried by the upper end of the rod 8', consequently when the rod 8 is rotated the shaft 1 5=is also rotated. Secured to the shaft 15are drums 18, which drums have secured thereto as at 19 flexible menubers 20 which extend downwardlythrough 2'}:
theunde rsides of the casings 5'and .6 andare secured at 21 to rings 22 carried by the upper ends of .slidable weight members 23, which are slidably mounted on the rods 7 and 8. However it will be seen that the rod 8 is rotatably mounted within one of the weight members, but at the same time it vertical movement, therefore the use of a separate operating shaft is obviated' Weight members 23 are provided with arms forms a guide 'for weight member in its 24 for the reception of the pintles 25 of a shade roller 26, and consequently when said weight members 23 are simultaneously raised by the rotation of the drums 18 or allowed to lower under their own weight, the shade roller maybe positioned at various elevations, and particularly to a position where the upper sash of a window may be lowered and a free passage ofair allowed to a room without interference fronr the shade 27.
Referring to Figure 5, the device is substantially the same as shown in Figure 1, with'the exception that the casing 6 has dis posed therein helical or worm gears 28 and 29 instead of the bevel gears 17 and 16, and
this form is particularly adapted where the casings 6 are secured to the inner face of a window frame, otherwise the construction and operation is the same as shown in-Figure 1.
From the above it will be seen that an adjustable shade support is provided, which is simple in construction, positive in its operation and provided with gear operating mechanism, which gear operating mechanism will require sutlicient power to operate the same,
which will be greater than the powerof the weights23 and therefore the weights will stay in any position to which they may be moved. The various casings and weights are preferably formed in sections so that they may be easily and quickly assembled on the rods, and access may be easily and quickly had to the casings.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 7 '1. An adjustable shade supporting means comprising casings secured to the opposite sides of a window frame adjacent the upper and'lower ends thereof, parallel vertically disposed rods connecting said casings, weight members vertically siidable on said rods, shade pintle receiving members carried by said weight members, a horizontally disposed shaft rotatably mounted in the upper casings, drums carried by said horizontally disposed shaft, flexible members extending around said drums, said flexible members having their ends secured to the weight members, one of said vertically disposed rods being rotatably mounted in the casings and in the weight member, gear connections'between said last named rod and the horiprising vertically disposed parallel rods at opposite sides of the window frame, weight members slidably mounted on said rods, a horizontally disposed rod at the upper end of the frame and rotatably mounted, cable connections between the weight members and the horizontally disposed rods, of means for rotating the horizontally disposed rods, said means comprising gear connections between the horizontally disposed rod, and the upper end of one of the parallel rods and bevel gear means cooperating with the lower end of said last named rod. I
3. The combination with an adjustable shade roller supporting device, said device comprising w'eight members slidably mounted on parallel rods, a drum rod, flexible connections between the drum rod and the weight member, of operating means for the drum rod, said means comprising one of the parallel. rods, gear connections between the drum: rod and last named parallel rod and means for rotating said last named parallel rod. 1 i
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
BEVILL'W. WHITWORTH'. I
