Description

Patented Sept. V`2l, 1926.
UNITED sTArSI-:s
PATENT @FFI-cnf AUGUST HABENICHT, or BAILEYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
RAILROAD TIE.
Application led October'S, 1925. Serial No. 61,408.
This invention relates to improvements` be coated by galvanic processes or heat treatments that anticipate and largely prevent corrosion between relatively close adjustment of parts.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of means whereby rails of conventional type may be rigidly secured to metallic ties adapted to be -securely embedded in the roadway.
Another object is to provide means Whereby rails may be expeditiously aligned and prevented by iXed abutments from side movement. Y
A further object provides means whereby water or moisture will be conveyed away from the point of contact between the rails and the ties.
And a still further object is the means provid-ed for mechanically clamping the rails to the ties.
These and other objects are .accomplished by the novel and practical construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railway tie made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is an enlarged side view of the clamp member.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the same member.
Referring now in detail to the figures, the numeral 10 designates a pair of track rails,
transversely disposed across a metallic rail tie, comprising a rectangular platebody 11, having gradually widening end elements 12,
Vangularly down-turned and adapted to be securely embedded in the roadbed material.v
Formed transversely of the body 11 are depressedrchannel elements 13 spaced apart at predetermined distances, and adapted to receive therein the base elements14 of the rails 10.
Rectangular raised locking lug elements 15 integral with the plate 11 and in line with the outer ledges of the channels 13, are produced by partially cutting through the base plate and forcing the lug upward.
A space 16, shown in Figure 4, provides an opening through which water may pass from the channel to the road bed. A further means for permitting accumulated moist-ure to pass frombetween the rail base 14 and the channel 13 is th-e tubular integral element 17 formed through the tie, central with the channel sides, as shown in Figure 3.
A rail clamp, shown in Figure 5, comprises a body 18, a segmental clamp el-ement 19, a screw threaded element 20, and a head .21 adapted to receive a wrench for tightening.
Referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that the thread-ed el-ement 2O of the rail clamp unit, engages suitable threaded openings formed through the tie, and that las the unit is turned by the head 21, the segment clamp 19 will engage the rail base 14 forcing it downward and rigidly securing it within the channel of the tie.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a practical, efficient railway tie has been disclosed and that it is applicable to any gauge or weight of track and that substitution of the old type of wooden tie for the type described can be readily accomplished.
It will also be seen that objections to metal ties in general has been overcome by providing means for disposing of accumulated moisture between abutting surfaces of the rails and tie elements.
Having `thus described and illustrated my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letter-s Patent, is n 1. A railway tie comprising a metallic .plate having broadened downturned ends,
right-angled rail base receiving channels lOO form-ed transversely in the face of said plate7 square hooks integral with said plate .at the outer edgesvo said channels, and means n -saicl channels for draining the same.
2. A railway tie Vcomprising ,a inet-allie plate, the ends of said plates being widened.
to approximately twice the Width of their main portions and bent angularly Clown- Warcl, with spaced transverse channels having vertical Walls and means nterme- 10 Cliate said Walls for draining the channels.
In Witness whereof I have aiX-ed my sig nat-ure.
AGUST HABENIGHT.
