This invention relates to surgicalinstrir ments and particularly what are kn wn sponge holders; and the object of. the invention is to provide an instrument of the class specified with improved means for supporting a sponge or other body and for retaining the same against displacement when supported in connection with the instrue ment; a. further object being to provide means for retaining the sponge supporting body permanently in connection with the instrument; a still further object being to provide an instrument in connection with which supporting bodies of diller'ent shapes. or forms may be mounted; and with these and other objects in view, the invention con purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efiicient in use and which-is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a side view. of an instrument made according to my invention and indicating the method of its use.

In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have shown one form of instrument made according to my invention and comprising two handle members 10 and 11 pivoted together as shown at 12 and provided at their free ends with loops 13 to receive the fingers of ahand, and the handle members are adjustably interlocked as shown at 1st in the usual manner in instruments of the class under consideration. The handle members 10 and 11 project beyond the pivot 12 in the form of aw members .10 and 11 said handle members being crossed at the pivotal connection in the manner shown and said jaw members are Fig. 3 but trum m,
provided with inter-meshing jaws 10 and ll 'at their free ends.
A sponge supporting member 15 com prising a rod 16 and an elliptical cylir ical body 17 is coupled with the tool the Q0 ling being formed by passing the pivot pin or screw 12 through a loop or eye 18 one end of the rod 16. In the construction shown in 1 and 2, the attached end of the rod 6 16 is located between separate handle members 10 and 11 where pivoted together and said rod extends in subs antially parallel relation to the longitudinal plane of the instrument as does also the body 1?. In. Fig. t. of the drawing, I have. shown another modification in which the jaw members 1O and 11 are curved rather than .110 straight as shown in Fig. 1' of the drawing, and with this construction the rod 16 or the member 15 is curved to correspond with the curvature of the jaw members and 11 and the body 17 and neck 17 are curved to correspond with the curvature of the rod 167 In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have shown a modification of the construction of the member 15, in which a flat disk shaped body 17 is substituted for the elliptical, cylindrical body 17. The shape of the body 17 is preferablyl elliptical in form but any shape of body may be employed other than those herein shown and described, to suit specific uses of the instrument.
The instrument is designed for use by surgeons and others in stopping the flow of blood during surgical operations and primarily for use insuch operations asthe extraction of tonsils and adenoids and as herebefore stated, a body of predetermined antiseptic material such as cotton, gauze or the like is mounted on the supporting body 17 or 17 and retained in position by the jaws 10 and 11 It will be noted that the member 15 by reason of its pivotal mounting is capable of movement relatively to the separate aw members to facilitate the centralizing thereof between said jaw members, and itwill be understood that while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, that I am not neces sarily limited to these details and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An instrument of the class described comprising relatively-movable aw members having gripping jaws at their freeends, a sponge mounting member supported on the pivot of said jaw members and positioned therebetween, said sponge mounting member being provided beyond said, jaws vith an enlarged body on which a sponge is adapted to be mounted,'the jaws of said jaw members being adapted to engage said sponge supporting member adjacent the enresponding larged body thereon, and said sponge, to retain the sponge against displacement from said body.
2. An instrument of the class described comprising relatively movable jaw members having gripping jaws at their free ends, a sponge mounting member supported on the pivot of said jaw members and positioned therebetween, said sponge mounting member being provided beyond said jaws with an enlarged body on which a sponge is adapted to be mounted, the jaws of said jaw members being adapted to engage said sponge supporting member adjacent the enlarged body thereon, and said sponge, to retain the sponge against displacement from said body, and said jaw members and sponge supporting member being curved. 3. An instrument of the class described comprisin relatively movable jaw members having gripping jaws at their free ends, a rod mounted on the pivot of said jaw members and positioned therebetween, the free end portion of said rod projecting beyond the jaws of said jaw members and provided externally thereof with an-enlarged sponge supporting body, and the jaws of said jaw members being adapted to engage that portion of a sponge encircling said rod adjacent said body to hold the spongeagainst displacement from said body. 7

An instrument of theclass described comprising relatively movable jaw members having gripping jaws at their free ends, a rod mounted on the pivot of saidjaw members and positioned therebetween, the free end portion of said rod projecting beyond the jaws of said jaw members and provided externally thereof with an enlarged sponge supporting body, the jaws of said jaw members being adapted to engage that portion of a sponge encircling said rod adjacent said body to hold the sponge against displacement from said body, and the circumferential dimensions of the jaw end portion of said jaw members being less than the cordimensions of said enlarged body. i T -I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as -my invention I have signed-my'name this 14th day of March, 1924;.
