Description
Sept. 14 1926.
F. D. POWELL VISIBLE CARD SYSTEM Filed July 16 Patented Sept. 14, 1926.
UNITED (STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK D. POWELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR. BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS. TO
ACME CARD SYSTEM COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLI- NOIS.
Application filed July 16,
7 ticularly to that type of system in which a plurality of overlapping cards are mounted 6 in a frame in such a manner as .to expose the lower edges of the cards which contain the identifying data.
1. am aware that heretofore, overlapping cards have been mounted in a frame by means of detachable carriers or hangers as for example, in Anthony Patent No. 1,327,936, dated Jan. 13, 1920. 1 am also aware that a plurality of cards have been supported in a pocket member suspended from a carrier or hanger, which is itself mounted in a frame. In addition, heretofore a plurality of cards has been threaded on a hanger, which cards however cannot be removed from the hanger without first removing the hanger from the frame.
The present invention is distinguished from the above constructions and has advantages thereover, as will appear in the description hereinafter set forth.
In addition, there are conditions under which it may be desirable to provide each hanger with a plurality of cards, as for example, where it may be necessary or advantageous to have a maximum amount of data for any given subject and have such data immediately available. It may also be very convenient and desirable to have the data-containing slips removable or detachable from the hanger without removing the hanger from its frame member. -Where easily soiled data-containing slips or papers are used, it will of course, be desirable to keep them clean.
The present invention afiords all of the above advantages without necessitating an expensive or complicated structure and in fact without radically departing from the general type of structure to which the public using these devices is accustomed.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front view of my device with the central portion broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view (but showing the channel portion of the frame in dotted lines) of one of the units.
Fig. 4 is a View generally similar to Fig. 3, of a modified construction.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1'
single sheet of paper.
VISIBLE CARD SYSTEM. 1
1920. Serial No. 396,760.
designates the channel frame member, provided at either side of the body portion with channels 2, to receive the wireliangers 3. These wire hangers 3 are detachably sprung into the opposed channels of the frame members, as shown in the drawing and are provided with return bends 4. Detachably and movably supported from the return bonds at of the hangers are the carriers 5. These carriers 5 may take the form of relatively stilf cardboards or they may be made of other material or may be transparent in whole or in part. The carriers are detachahly mounted on the hangers by means of clips (1, which are preferably fixedly secureil to the upper edge of the can rib! and are provided with eyes 7, whereby' they may he slipped on the :inturncd ends 4 of the hangers 3. The arrangement is such that these carriers can be mounttl on the hangers either while the hangers are in the frame or are out of the frame. They can also be detached from the hangers in the same way.
Detachahly mounted on the carriers are 'one or more datz-i-containing the cards.
'rier 5 is supported adata-containing member 8, which is aperturcd or notched as shown at 9, 9, the arrangement being such that the notches readily slip over the eyes of the clips 6. Each of these men'ibers 8 comprises a front portion 10, and a rear portion 11, preferably in the form of a It is to be particularly noted that the fhont portion 10 may be somewhat shorter so that the card 5 (Figs. 2 and 3) extends below and exposes identifying data placed thereon. tion, by mounting the member 8 in the man ner just described, it will be entirely concealed from view and also protected from being soiled in the event that the carrier of the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 is used.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a modified construction which is exactly similar to the one" previously described, except that the card carrier 5 does not extend down so as to cover up the data-containing member but extends In addionly sufficiently to form an effective support from which the data-containing papers can be suspended. In this modified construction, it. is not necessary to have the indexing or identifying; data applied to the exposed lower margins of the card carriers as is the case in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. In this modified form, the exposed edges of the overlapping data-containin; papers will contain the necessary identifying information.
I have heretofore stated that the carriers 5 in F 1 to 3, may be made transparent in .WllOlG or in part. This can be accomplished by maliing the members 5 of transparent celluloid and different colored carriers may be used, if desired or the carrier may hare a transparent window which can be accompl shed by cutting an aperture in an opaque card and closing said aperture ith transparent celluloid.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the character described, the con'ibination with a frame member, of a phirality of hangers detachably mounted therein, a card-simulating carrier detachably suspended fromeach hanger, and one or more data-containEng members folded across i and supported by each carrier.
2. In a device of the character described, the con'iblnation with a frame n'ien'iber, of a plurality of resilient metal hangers detachably mounted therein, a card-simulatingcar-- rier detachably suspended from each hanger,
. and one or more data-containing members folded across and sumiortcd by each carrier,
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member, of a plurality of hangers dcta chably mounted therein, carriersdetachably suspended fromthe hangers, taking the form of flat card members, and one or more data-containing members folded across and supported by .each carrier.
1-. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member, of a plurality of hangers detaehably mounted therein, a card-simulating carrier detachably suspended from each hanger, and one or more separate data-containing members of relatively thin paper folded across andsupported by each card-sinuilating carrier.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a. frame member, of a plurality of hangers detachably mounted therein, a card-simulating carrier detachably suspended from each hanger, and one or ,moredata-ctmtaining members folded across and supported by each card-simulating carricr, sald card-simulating carriers With the data-containing members being detachable from the hangers, either While the latter are in the frame or removed from the frame.
6. In" a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member, of resilient metal hangers detachablv mounted therein, individual carriers detachably suspended from individual hangers taking the form of flat card members and one or more data-containing members taking the form of relatively thin paper folded across and supported by each carrier, said carriers with the data-containing members, being detachable from the hangers, either while the latter are in the frame or removed from the frame.
7. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a. frame, of resilient the card-simulating carriers.
9. In a visible card index, the combination with a flanged frame, of resilient hangers supported by the flanges of said frame and held adjacent to each other,.carriers taking the form of relatively stiff cards detachably supported by the hangers and folded substantially flexible index sheets supported at their folded margins by the carriers.
10. In a device of the character described the combination with a frame, of resilient spacing hangers removably supported in the frame, card-simulating carriers attached to the hangers, folded sheets supported at their folded margin by the cardsimulating carriers and removable therefrom Without removing; the hangers from the frame.
11. In a device of-the character described the combination with a frame, of resilient hangers removably supported by the frame, cards hinged to the hangers, folded data sheets supported alone their folded edges by.
the cards and removable therefrom Without removing the hangers from the frame.
