Most of the cheap I are imported in rough hat form from foreigncountries, such as Island of Java, Mexico, Dutch West Indies-,1 and other countries, and said hats are usually already made up when received in the United States from the manufacturers. In viewv of the foregoing, any device for printing on said hats must be capable of printing on a convex surface. 7 v
For many years cloth caps have been distributed on which advertisements were printed, but the difficulties encountered in connect-ion with printing on straw hats were not met with in printing said caps for the reason that the cloth from which the caps were formed wasprinted in flat form before the caps were made. In connection with straw hats, however, it is not possible to print on the material before the hats are made up.
Attempts were made prior to this invention to flatten the curved walls of straw hats and print on said walls while they were so flattened, but this method resulted in failure for the reason that after an impression had been made and the type was being withdrawn the wall of the hat would immediately return to-its original curved condition, said hat wall following the type, and consequently the impression would be smeared. In thev drawing, A designates my improved apparatus for printing on straw hats which comprises a base member 1 which supports a front plate 2 and a rear plate 3, said plates 2 and 3 being secured to said base member 1 and being extended upwardy therefrom. The plates 2 and 3 are secured together by means of. a' pair of brackets 4 whereby said plates are given the required rigidity to support the mechanism of the apparatus.

The printing member 14 and type 15 may be formed of any suitable material, such, for instance, as rubber, and the type holder is so arranged with respect to the block 7 that when the shaft 8 is rotated I the type 15 will move along a curved line which passes a very slight distance from the periphery of the block 7; 16 designates an operating handle by means of which the V shaft 8 may be conveniently rotated.
In the use of my improved hat printing apparatus the type supporting member and the handle 16 associated therewith are moved to the position in which they are shown by dotted lines in Fig. I of the drawing, after am hi h a hat B is drawn over the block 7' as shown in Figs. I and II, the brim B of said hat being located adjacent to the front plate 2 and the block 7, which is so shaped that it will fit closely within the crown of said hat, being located within said crown of 7 said hat. When the hat B has been arranged in place as described, the shaft 8 is rotated by moving the handle 16 until an end of the printing member 14 contacts with the crown of the hat B. The movement of the type supporting member is continued after this contact is made and this continued movement will cause rotary movement to be imparted to the hat B and block 7 ,whereby impressions of the type 15 will be made.

I claim:
An apparatus for printing on a hat which comprises a rotatable member adapted to re-;
ceive a hat, said rotatable member being of such shape that it will fit relatively closely within the crown of said hat and a second rota-table member having arcuate faces on which printing type are arranged, the second mentioned rotatable member being capable of being rotated while varying portions of the type thereon are in contact with the hat on the first mentioned rotatable member;
whereby said hat is rotated and impressions of said type are placed on said hat during the rotation thereof.
