UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS LEONARD, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
SAEFTY RAILWAY GATE.
Application filed March 24, 1924. Serial No. 701,327.
This invention relates to a safety gate for railway crossings, and has for its object to provide arms adapted to be coincidently swung; as signal warnings to prevent a move- 5 ment of vehicles or pedestrians across the tracks of railways, and thereby prevent injuries from moving trains, the parts provided for these purposes to be few so that the construction will be cc and will he durable and practical in use.
With the foregoing objects in view the invention presents a novel and useful construction, con'ihination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanyii'ig;
wherein,-
.Fig. 1 is a side view of the c is a plan view of the same.
tain mechanism employed particular description, the
housing a railway track 8.
Numeral 9 indicates a shaft havingr bearn, ings in the sides of the housing. At 10 is indicated a signal arm having side strips 11 disposed outwardly of the sides of the housing and rigidly secur-edto the shaft 9, said strips 11 preferably being constructed of light-weight material and provided at one of their ends with counterbalances 12 having flanges 13 and secured to the side strips 11 by any suitable means.
Any suitable means may be provided for and simple levice.
Figs. 3 and et are side views showing a housing; for cer for moving the signal. arms, the arms shown in Fig. 3 being in horizontal positions, and the arms shown in Fig. i being disposed vertically.
Referring now to the drawing for a more invention is shown and described in connection with a disposed between a road bed or hi gh way (3 and a sidewalk 7 extending across degrees to the upright position shown in Fig. 4: as a signal and permitting travel on the highway 6 and sidewalk 7, or for moving said arm downwardly to, approximately, a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 3, as asignal to prevent travel across the railway tracks. 7 I
I claim as my invention A safety gate for railway crossings, comprising a housing, a shaft journalled therea road. crossing gate composed of side strips each provided with a counterbalance and secured upon opposite ends of the shaft, a side walk gate composed of a pair of side strips journalled on the sides of the housing, and a link connecting each of the last named strips with a side strip of the first named gate between the counterbalance and the shaft.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature.
