SAFETY RAZOR.
Application filed February 27, 1924. Serial No. 695,529.
The present invention relates particularly to an index'adjusting device for use in connection with safety razors of the Gillette type wherein a Kflexible and elastic blade is provided with cutting edges that are adjustable toward and from the guird member of the razor. This adjustment of thel cutting edges of the blade is accomplished by turning the handle of the razor to the desired position with relation to the head of the razor. The present invention is an improvement upon the invention disclosed and claimed in my lprior patent, Reissue No'. 16,264, dated February 16, 1926, and has -for its object to simplify and improve'- the construction of theindex adjusting device of that patent.'
j In the accompanying drawing Iv have illustratedA one complete example of a physical embodiment of my invention,
wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application ofthe principles of my invention. It
will be understood however that changes and alterations may-be made in the device as shown without departing from the spirit of my invention, and within the scope of my appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a safety razor embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a view at right angles to Fig` ure 1, showing certain parts in section; Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation of the top portion of the handle, withV certain parts removed; and Figure 5 is a top plan view of the part shown in Figure 4.
In the preferred form of the linvention as illustrated in the drawings a safety razor of the Gillette type is shown havin the `rotatable handle 1 and flexible, elastic lade 2 provided with the opposed cutting edges l5 6, 3, the blade being detachable for cleansing 'or replacement, and adjustable with.
relation to the guard plate 4 against which said blade is clampedby the clamp plate 5 which has a central screwl or threaded C bolt 6 that passes through an opening 6 in the guard plate 4, and also has appair'fof spaced posts 7 which pass through guide openings 7 in the guar plate. Such parts may be of the usual and vwell' known form.
L r i portion of the razor which will' now be described. The handle 1 is recessed axially to provide a central cylindrical cavity 8, theupper or inner end of which thus forms a thin walled tube 9, the upper end 10 of which is preferably slit at 11 and somewhat expanded in diameter at that point for a purpose which will 'be hereinafter referred to. The tube 9 may be integral with the handle 1 or separate therefrom, and securely fastened thereto.
Vithin the tube 9 and fitting snugly therein is a bushing 12, the upper or inner end of which is preferably iianged at 13 and centrally recessed with a central threaded opening 14 adapted to' receive the central threaded bolt 6 of the clamp plate 5. The bushing 12 is pinned at `15 to the handle 1 so as to be rigid therewith.
The tube 9 is surrounded by a rotary sleeve 16 held againstaxial movement by the flange 13 of bushing 12 and the shoulder 17 onthe handle 1. The upper or inner ianged end 18 of the rotary sleeve 16 carries on its outer periphery a graduated series of indicia marksas 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-which arewadapted to successively register with a p fixed mark v19A on the guard plate 4,' when the sleeve 16 is rotated.
- It will be apparent, from the foregoing description, that the sleeve` 16 is rotatable on the handle 1 between the iiange 13 and the shoulder 17, and that'said sleeve is frictionally retarded in its rotary movement by its engagement with the slit and the j expanded end 10-of the tube 9 extending from the upper or inner end of the handle 1. Said sleeve 16 will,therefore, rotate with the handle 1 when the latter is screwed on 95 to the bolti, but may" be rotatably ad- Ajusted independently yof the handle, during dex marksI and an index on sain sleeve\and a fixed "part ofthe razor. The invention is embodied n the handle ,2. Iii/,a razor of the Gillettetype having a ard, a clamp plate having a threaded boi?,1 a handle having a thin walled tube at one end, said tube being slit and expanded, a bushing located in said tube, said 5 bushing having a flanged end and a central threaded opening adapted to receive the threaded bolt of said clamp plate, a rotatably adjustable sleeve swivellcd on and in frictional engagement' with' said tube and retained thereon by the flanged end of said I bushing, and cooperatingv index marks and an index on said sleeve and a fixed part of the razor.
