This invention relates to desks or that type designed primarily for ofilces, one of the objects or the invention being to provice a desk which can be converted readily either into a flat top desk or a desk having an upstanding section with pigeon holes readi y accessible.
A further object is to provide a desk having a movable section which can be easily secured in depressed positionwhile the desk is in use as a fiat top desk.
A. further object is to provide simple and ancient means whereby the raising of the movable section can be effected readily.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the prelerrcd form of the invention has been shown.
in said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the desk, the movable section being raised, a portion of the desk being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the desk on line 22, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the desk, the movable section being in lowered position.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one or the locking levers.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the body portion of the desk, the drawers 2 of which are extended only part way toward theback of the body so as to leave sutlicient space in the rear portion of the body to receive the movable section of the desk. In front of this space the body 1 is provided with a stationary top 3. The movable section of the desk has been indicated at 4-. and is adapted to fit snugly between the top 3 and the back of the body 1. This movable section is divided into compartments 5 which can be used as pigeon holes and also for the reception of drawers as shown. l i hen the section 4 is in its lowermost position the top 6 thereof lies flush with the fixed top 3 so that the entire desk is thus provided with a flattop as shown in Fig. 2.

movable section near the sides thereof are hangers 7 and each hanger is pivotally at tached atits lower end to one end of an arm 8. The two arms 8 are fixedly secured to and rotate with a shaft 9 extending transversely between the side portions or pedestals of the desk and this shaft has an operating handle 10 extending therefrom to a point where it can be reached readily by the user or the desk. Springs 11 are attached to the arm 8 and also to the fixed top 3 of the desk. These springs serve to yieldingly support the arms 8 and hold the movable section elevated as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Pivotally mounted under the fixed portion 3 or the top at the sides thereof are levers 12, each of which is provided, at its inner end, with a lateral extension 13 constituting a locking bolt. The other end of the lever has afinger piece 14 which projects beyond the side of the desk. A slot 15 is provided in eachside of the desk in which the levers can Work.
Secured to the bottom of the top 6 of the movable section close to the front edge thereof are keepers 16 so located that when the movable section is in its lowermost position, these keepers can receive the bolt 13 which will thus lock the movable section in its low ermost position as shown in Fig. 2. lVhen it is desired to elevate the movable section the finger pieces 14 are pressed rearwardly. This will cause the levers 12 to swing and draw the bolt 18 from the keepers 16. Con sequently springs 11 will operate to lift the movable section 4 so that it will assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When it is desired to use the desk with the movable section depressed, this section is pushed downwardly oris forced downwardly by pulling upwardly on the handle 10. As soon as the top 6 comes into line with the top 3 the finger pieces 14 are shifted so as to move the bolt 13 into engagement with the keepers. Thus the movable section will be held securely in lace. p What is claimed is In a desk the combination with a body having a fixed top extending partly thereover and drawers arranged side by side beneath and close to the top, of a transverse shaft journaled beneath said top and below one of the drawers, arms secured to and movable with the shaft, a desk section mounted for up and down movement between the back of the body and the fixed top, the top of said section being flush with the fixed top when the section is in its lowermost position, springs connecting the arms with the fixed top, said springs being extended back of one oi the drawers, hangers connecting said arms with the movable sections, said springs, arms and hangers cooperating to hold the movable section normally extended above the fixed top levers fulcrumed upon the bottom surface of the fixed top back of the drawers and extended laterally beyond the respective sides of the body but below the top, extensions upon the inner ends of the lever, and means upon the top of the movable section for engagement by said extension when said section is in its lowermost position thereby to hold the movable section against elevation under the action of the springs.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 20 my own I have hereto afiixed my si nature.
