rasant.
rllhis invention relates to certain improve-4 ments in barrels and it. primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this lrind including a metal hoop constructed in a manner to effectively protect the bottom of the` barrel and especially whenused for handling` vegetables or the like in fields7 cellars or warehouses.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this `f j'eneral character coinprising a metal hoop constructed in a inanner to effectively maintain the barrel staves in applied position and also to prevent the bottom of the barrel beingforced out of applied position by the weight of the barrel content and thus avoiding a disadvantage encountered in connection with barrels having the general type of wooden hoops.
in additional object of the invention is to provide a metal hoop adapted to be applied to the bottom of said barrel and which is constructed in a manner to materially facilitate the rolling of the barrel on said noop. j Y
rlhe invention consists inthe details of construction and in the combination and 'arrangement of the several parts of my improved barrel whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, i
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be denitely claimed.
ln order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying` drawings, wherein Figure l is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating` a barrel constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the lbot- `tom hoop as herein disclosed unapplied;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the hoop as illustrated in Figure Q, the line of section being substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 5;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in bottom planv of the structure illustrated in Figure l.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, S denotes the staves 0f a barrel each of which being provided adjacent its lower end with the croze or transverse Vgroove i to receive the chamfered peripheral portion 2 of the bottom head B. Each of said staves S outwardly wf the croze or groove l has its inner end edge also provided with a chamfer orl bevel 3 for apurpose to be hereinafter moreparticularly referred to. The bottom hoop H is formed of metal and initially has a fixed formation of desired radius. rThe inside surface l of the hoop is disposed on an outward or upward slant ori incline from plumb of substantially six degrecs to conform to the outer surface of the staves S inthe assembled barrel structure and the inner portion of the top edge of the hoop H is grounded or otherwise formed to provide an upward andcoutward bevel 5 to facilitate the application ofthe hoop ll; in applied position, said bevel 5 eliminating a sharp corner which would have a tendency to bite into the staves and thus materially hinder or obstruct the desired application of the hoop. Y
The lower marginal portion of the hoop H is defined by an inwardly disposed flange or lip 6 which materially strengthens or re-` inforces the hoop and is also of a size to extend inwardly beyond the adjacent eXw tremities of the staves S. The' flange or lip 6 through the medium of the members or Strips 7 interposed between the flange 6 and the head B provides an effective meansto prevent the head B being forced out from the barrel structure andparticularly under the influence of the weight of the barrel content. Each of these members 7 are nailed or otherwise anchored or attached to the head B and the outer margin 8 of each of said members 7 disposed on a bevel to have substantially closjJ contact with the chamfers or bevels 3 of the adjacent staves S.
The remote outside corner of the hoop H is grounded or otherwise formed to provide therearound a continuous bevel 9 upon which the barrel structure is adapted to be rolled in the well known manner7 said bevel 9 `materially facilitating such rolling` action and more particularly in view of the fact that it prevents the hoop under the weight of the barrel structure and its contents from cuttinginto the Hoor or other surface upon which it is traversing.
The lower portion of the hoop H is provided therearound with a series of equiiCal dstantly spaced openings l0, said openings being preferably fourteen in number, through each of which is adapted to be disposed a nail ll to penetrate a stave S and the peripheral portion of the head B to provide means for maintaining the hoop H in applied position and also the head B. The upper portion of the hoop H is also provided therearound with two concentric series of openings l2 the openings of one series being staggered or odset with respect to the openings of the other and the'openings of the inner Series staggered or offset with respect to the openings lO. Disposed through each of the openings l2 is a nail 14 of a length to penetrate an adjacent stave S and to be clinched to the inner surface of the stave.
The particular arrangement of the openings l0 and l2 as herein disclosed has a particular advantage in view of the fact that it does not weaken the hoop H to any great extent and furthermore provides means whereby the nails disposed therethrough are not liable to split the staves S.
It is also to be understood that the bevel 5 will permit the hoop H to beA readily placed on a barrel that may be slightly oversize or wherein the coacting extremities of the staves S have knots or other irregularities. It is also preferred that the bevel 9 be on substantially an angle of forty-five degrees.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a barrel constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly 4well adapted for use by reason of `the convenience and facility Vwith which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangementand formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A barrel structure comprising, in combination, staves each having a croze extending thereacross adjacent its lower end, each of said staves outwardly of the croze having its inner edge beveled, a hoop disposed around the lower portions of the staves, the outer margin of the hoop being provided with an inwardly disposed flange extending beyond the staves, a bottom head having a ohamfered peripheral portion engafring within the crozes of the staves, and mem ers secured to the peripheral portion of the outer face of the head, said members having their outer margins beveled to snugly engage within the beveled portions of the staves, the inner marginal portion of the Hangeof the hoop having direct Contact with said members.
2. A barrel structure comprising, in combination, stares each having a croze extending thereacross adjacent its lower end, each of said staves outwardly of the Croze having its inner edge beveled, a hoop disposed around the lower portions of the staves, the outer margin of the hoop being provided with an inwardly disposed flange extending beyond the staves, a bot-tom head having a chamfered peripheral portion engaging within the croze of the staves, members secured to the peripheral portion of the outer face of the head, said members having their outer margins beveled to snugly engage within the beveled portions of the staves, the inner marginal portion of the flange of the hoop having direct contact with said members, and attaching members disposed through the hoop and through the'staves, said attaching members also penetrating the bottom head.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my signature,
JOHN HOLT.
