My invention relates to sound reproducing determined by the distance between the ends apparatus and ceivers. I
One object of my invention is to -provide a new embodiment of a loud speaking device, wherein signal currents are faithfully translated into sound Waves, and vice verse, Without distortion.
Another object of my invention is to provide an extrernelysimple loud speaking receiver having readily adjustable parts and particularly to telephone resusceptible of inexpensive quantity produc-.
tion in existing automatic machinery.
According, to my invention, 1 provide an instrument for accomplishing the aboverncntioncd dcsiredrcsults comprising apermanent magnet having divided magnetizable polar rejections extending from one end thereor, the ends of the extensions being disposed in spaced relation. A vibratory magnetiznloic armature member has one end so curedto the remaining end of the permanent magnet and the other end interposed between the ends of the polar projections in bclencedrelation thereto. A magnetizing winding is provided for disturbing the balanced condition 'n "the armature in accordence with the signal currents, and a dia phragm of comics shape is mechanically associeted vvith the armature member, whereby the armature vibration may be translated into sound Waves.
Wit 1 these and other objects in view, my invention further consists in the details of v construction and o eration hereinafter described and claimeu and illustrated in the accompanying druw'ing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan View of one embodinient of my invention, the diaphragm being Fig. 2 is a verticalloirg'itndinal sectional view of the device shownin, Fig. 1 taken on the line II-H thereof;
Fig. 3 is a similar view, the sectional plane being indicated by the line HL-Hll of Fig. l.
in the illustrated form of embodiment of my invention, ll provide a soundwvave translstingdevice 1 comprising a substantially circular permanent magnet 2 having its end portions or poles 3 and 4; dis osed in lat erally and vertically spaced re ation. The permanent magnet 2 thus forms a magnetic circuit having an air gap 5 therein which is thereof. 1 din electromagnet 6 is provided compris mg a core member *2 and anenerglzing Winding 8. Secured to opposite ends of the core.
member '2', ere pressed steel members 9 end 11 which areas bent as to arrange tree end portions 12 end 13 thereof in spaced role tion' with a relatively small sir gap l4: there,
between, thereby causing the portions and 13 to serve as poles for the electrrimng net 6. The magnetic circuit of the electro magnet thus includes the core '5, the steel member 9,.the air gap i l and the steel memher 11.. The electro-magnet 6 may he se-.
cured to the top side of the end portion 3 of the permanent magnet 2 by means of an extension 15 o the upper steel frame 9.;
till
A vibratory magnetizable armature cbn-.
struction 16 comprises an ermature member 17 which is vibratably positioned in the air gap 14.- by means of a spring member 18 having one end secured to the armature member 17 and having the other end secured to the end portion l oi the permanent magnet 2. Perellel paths are thus provided for the ma netic circuit of the permanent magnet 2 by t; e ac-= tion. of the steel members 9 and 11, the parallel paths being reunited in the armature c onstruction 16. It is understood that my invention is not to be strictly limited to the armature construction 16, just described, and that the same may be replaced by a single resilient armature member consisting of magnetizable material. 1
The free end of the armature member 1? may be rigidly secured, by means of a connecting link 22, to the midpoint 23 of a diephragm 24 of conical shape. Adiephragm of the shape stated is provided because of its greater rigidity inpom arisen to the ordinary flat diaphragtm.- further distinguishes"from the ordinary design in that the periphery thereof is not rigidly secured to a sup orting member and hence may vibrate with substantially the same intensity as the center Attention is directed to the tact thst the di e diaphragm Qt.
portion thereof.

When the armeture l7 'is'positioned substantially midway between the' two end porice ' the same. I
tions 12 and 13, which are of the same polarity, substantially no force is exerted on the armature member 17, tending to move the same. The armature 17 is thus under the effect of balanced opposing forces.
When a current, however, is caused to traverse the exciting Winding 8 of the electromagnet 6 in one direction, a force is ex erted on the armature member 17 by the pole meu'ibers 12 'and- 13 of the electromagnet '8 tending to move the armature 17 in one direction, and thus the balanced condition oi thearmature 17 is disturbed in one direction. When a current is caused to traverse the exciting Winding 8 in the opposite direction, the magnetic forces exerted on the armature member '1'? by the pole members 12 and '13 are reversed and the armature 17 moves in an opposite direction.
It can thus be seen that when the magnetizing Winding 8 is supplied with vibratory electrical energy, as found, for instance, in currents modulated in accordance with sound waves, the armature member 17 or armature construction 16 is caused to vibrats in accordance with the variations in the currents. The vibratory motion of the armature member 17 being translated to the diaphragm 24, sound waves of corresponding rib ation frequency ensue. In order to simplify the description of my invention and to facilitate a clear understanding of have eliminated from the do scription and drawings such portions of the general structure as are Well known to thoseslzilled in the art.
Among the several advantages characteri; is of my invention are simplicity in arrai c-ment, economy in manufacture and ellicicncy of operation. At no time is the diaphragm under tension, thereby simplify ing the construction as Well as increasing the efficiency of operation of the apparatus as a Whole, inasmuch as the possibility of distortion, resulting from harmonics in the diaphragm vibration, is eliminated. The light construction of the armature makes l'ltipailllfl the attainment of a high resonance pitch for the several vibratory elements as a whole and hence substantially no distortion .15 introduced by the same within the audible frequency 'range.
magnet comprising a coil with a magnetizable core disposed Within the horse-shoe magnet in an axis substantially perpendicular to the plane oftlre horse-shoe magnet, a magnetizable supporting member connecting one end of the alternating-current magnet to one end of said horse-shoe magnet. pole pieces connected to the respective ends of thealternating current magnet and hav ing; parallel sp'aced pole faces substantially parallel to the plane of the horse-shoe magnet, a resilient magnetizable armature construction securedto the other end of the horse-shoe magnet and extending between said pole faces, a diaphragm disposed in spaced substantially parallel relation to said horse-shoe magnet, and a connecting means between said diaphragm and said armature construction.
2. Ina translating device, a magnet of approximately ring shape, the ends of said magnet being spaced apart in a direction at an angle to the plane of the ring, a winding having its axis approximately parallel to the axis of said ring and a core of magnetic material for said winding magnetically connected to one end of said magnet, magnetic members extending from the ends of said core into proximity with each other and a vibratory magnetic arm extending from the other end of said magnet into the space between said magnetic members, said members and being Within the periphery of said ring. p
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th day of August ALEXANDER NYMAN.
