A CORPORATION OF GERMANY.
STEAM surnnnnnren,
Application filed November 4, 1924, Serial No. 747,721, and in Germany January 30,1924.
This invention relates to a superheater,
and, more particularly, to that type of superheater in which two semi-circular coils are housed in an annular chamber usually, in the case of locomobile, locomotive and similar boilers, Within the smoke-box.
It is a well-known practice to locate a superheater in the smoke-box of a locomobile or locomotive boiler and to direct the flue gases from the boiler through the superheater, through a front inlet opening atthe top and a rear outlet opening at the bottom of the superheater chamber, by closinga centrally mounted damper. As heretotore constructed, however, it has been impossible to provide any means for closing the inlet and outlet openings of the superheater chamber.
The object 01. my present invention is to obviate this defect; and this end I have at-' tained in my new superheater by providing control means whereby the combustion gases may be positively directed from or to the boiler either wholly through Y or wholly its inner endto the boiler and to its outer end is fixed the endplateb which is fitted with a door 5 removably secured thereto by the usual turn-buckles or the like, having formed therein a centrally located passage 4 for the exhaust gases. Vithin the smokeboX, the superheater 3, comprising two semicircularly disposed coils, is mounted on the smoke-box walls in the annular chamber which is formed by these walls and an inner and controlled from outside the casing. The cyllndrlcal wall 6 is provided at the top, on the boiler side of the transverse wall,
'with the opening 11 which is controlled,
from without, by the two dampers 11 and 11 mounted therein and which serves as the inlet opening to the superheater chamber and at the bottom on the exhaust side of the transverse wall with a corresponding outlet opening ,10 which in like manneris controlled by the similarly mounted dampers l0 and 10?. 1
-Thus, when the dampers 10 10 and 11 11 are open and the damper "9 is closed all the flue gases from the boiler will pass through the superheater on their way to the exhaust. It, on'the other hand, the
positions of these dampers are reversed so as to close the openings '10 and 11, and open the opening 8,;the flue gases will flow di reotly from the boiler to and out through the exhaust. And by suitably manipulating the dampers a greater or lesser part of'the flue, gases, as desired, can be directed I the purpose of cleaning, adjustment, or re- It is evident that my improved superheater may alsobe used, without substantial change, in connection with boilers'of the type in which it is desirable to so locate. the superheater that the combustion gases can be passed through it before passing through the boiler. I
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf
