IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-PACKING IMPLEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,929, dated February 16, 1875; application filed December 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND JAOOBY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packing Cigars, of which the followin g is a specification:
This invention consists in the combination, with a cigar-box, of a peculiar funnel or topless and bottomless frame, which fits the sides of the box nicely, and though which the cigars can be readily introduced into the box and compressed therein, so that, when a sufficient quantity of cigars has been introduced and compressed in a box and the funnel is withdrawn a small space is left between the cigars and the sides and ends of the box, and the cigars, particularly those adjacent to the ends of the box, are not liable to become injured.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a cigar-box, which is made of sheet metal, with a cover, B, which fits the body of the box nicely, and which is connected to said body by a hinge-joint, a, so that a firm and durable box is obtained.
For the purpose of filling this box with cigars I use a funnel or topless and bottomless frame, 0, which is, by preference, made of sheet metal, and which fits the interior of the box A, but which is made about twice as high as the body of the box in which the same is to be used. After this funnel has been placed in the empty box I introduce a quantity of cigars sufficient to fill the box, and then I compress these cigars by a follower or plunger which fits the funnel, the power applied being such that the bulk of the cigars contained in the funnel is reduced, so that when the funnel is withdrawn the box can be closed.
By these means I am enabled to compress the cigars in each box without danger of spoiling any of them, and after the funnel has been withdrawn a small space is left between the sides and ends of the box and the cigars,
and thereby the cigars are preserved against injury.
My funnel or topless and bottomless frame gars against moisture or against the influence of the outside atmosphere, and consequently the flavor and aroma of the cigars are fully preserved. At the same time a metallic box is not liable to get broken, and it can be used over and over again without difficulty; and even if the first cost of the metallic boxes is greater than that of wooden boxes, the use of the metallic boxes will in the end he a saving.
I am aware that four separate and independent plates have been adj ustabl y connected to blocks attached to a rectangular base-plate, in order to pass the said adjustable plates, one at a time, along the inner surface of the sides and ends of a cigar-box, and then said plates being tightened by set-screws for compressing the cigars, for the purpose of removing them from the box to examine them; but such is not my invention, nor can it be used for the same purpose.
I/Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The implement described for packing cigars in boxes, the same consisting of a rectangular frame constructed to fit within a cigar-box, said frame being open at top and bottom, whereby the cigars may be introduced at the top and compressed in place, preferably by a follower, within the cigarbox, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal. I
SIGMUND JAOOBY. LL.
