This invention relates to a combined door check and holder, and is con'cerned particularly with certain features which tends to inprove the operation and simplify theassembly ot its several parts. U
The de'vice of our invention makes use of springnieans which act conjointly with a fluid to -govern the door movements. It includes an improved Valve for controlling the flowof liquid consequent upon movement of the door. Such a valveis leak-proo'f and is readily adjustable, e as desired. The door check'proper includes a cylindrical body 5 from which are extended ,br'acket arms 6 for 'attachment to a door A. Within the body are upper and. lower chambers 7 and 8 respectively, separated by an annular shoulder .9 wherein is a threaded seat for accomnodatinga partition plate 10. Extending centrally through a hub in the partition plate is a spindle 11 which is surrounded by' a suitable packing so as to prevent leakage of fluid along 'the spindle from onechamber'to the other. A recess i& extends longitudinally along an inner faceof thewalls surrounding the lower chamber. As shown in Fig c, this recess is sub tantially 'semi-circnlar in cross section so as to receiveapproximately onehalf of a tubular stem 15; At its lower end this stem is rested npona shoulderl tormed at the lower reeess end, the upper end of the stem being proXim-ate to the partition plate; There is also a transverse bore 17 nearthe upper stem end which intersects the longtudinal bore' thereof, the purpose of whichwill presently appear. Fitted within the lower chamhers a hollow plunger 18 having exteriorly thereof a groove or recess for accoinmodating substantially onehelf of the'stem. In this manner the stem serves as a keyto prevent the plunger from rotating within the chamber, while permittng free vertical movement thereof. Between the plunger bottom and the bottom of the check' body is a compression spring 19 `which tends always to `raise the plunger. Through the plunger bottom we have also provided a port 20 wherein is a ball check valve 21, as shown. i
The interior of thei plunger in its upper region is provided with a spirally arranged shoulder 22 forming one element of a cam. (lo-Operating therewith is a second element ccnsistingof a collar 23 which'is pinned or otherwise made fastto the spindle, and disposed upon the under side of the partition plate Extending laterally from this collar is a head 24: adapted to rest upon the 'spiral shoulder22 of the plunger, its vertcal relaton theretoybeing determinedby i the rotatve position of the spindle.
, Within the upper chamber of .the casing we have provided a coiled spring 25 con nected both with its walls and with a thimble 26 upon which is eXerted a rotary force. This thimble which extends through the cover plate 12 carries on its outer end a ratchet disk 26 engaged by a dog 27 which 'is mounted on an' arm 28, One end of which is pivoted 'to the spindle end, as shown. Upon the spindle eXtremity is threaded a nut 29 which assures retention of the parts in the assembled relation just described. At
30 with a second arm' 31 withwhich is associated an extensble' rod 32, having one the opposte arm end is a pivotal connection end pivotally connected' as at 33 with a jamb i B or other stationary support adjacent the door. i i Exteriorly of the check body, we have .provided an annular shoulder 3& whereon is rested' a split collar 35 whose ends are outturned to provide lugs 36 which may be drawn together by a screw 37 as shown in Fig. 1.4 Inthis manner, the' collar maybe -rearwardly a shank clamp'ed tightly upon the easing in any desired rotative position. It is pi'e'ferred that the cover plate 12 should overhang the casing slightly so as to project into an annular recess 38 ot' the collar, whereby to confine it in place. Only by removing the nut 29, may the cover piate be removed to perinit disassembly of the collar 35 *froni the easing. Extending laterally from the collar and preterably at a point which is opposite the lugs 36 is 'a boss 39 wherein is a vertically extendin'a chamber 40 (see Fig. 2) closed at one end y a screW-threaded plug il. At the other chamber end an annular shoulder 42 may extend inwardly to confine in place a head 43 having a fiange 4:5 which receives thrust froni one end of a compression spring 455 whose opposite end bears against the plug etl. By this means we have provided in ettect a spring button which projects normally froni the boss, as shown. Preterably the outer 'face ot' the button is beveled as at 46 for yieldable engagement with a beveled abutment l? which is carried on the under side 'of the arm St. On account ot the cooperation between this button and the abutinent, we are able to Swing the door to a point where the abutment member passes over the button to assume a position on 'the 'opp'osite side thereof. The door may not then be closed under the action ot the spring;` and do or check unless an extra pressure be applied suliicient to overcome the retarding eitect 'of the button. The point in the door movement where the button will serve to resist closing` movement thereof may be adjusted at will by loosening the screw 37 and then shitting the collar 35 around to a new position. i
' In order that closingmovcments of the door may be re'tarded desirably a fluid agent isemployed. This is confined wholly within the ;lower chamber 8, and may flow freely through the opening *2 0 from the upper to the lower side ot the plunger, but not re- Versely owing to the presence of the check valve 21. Liquidmay also flow through the tu'bular key 15 except as prevented by a valve which presents a beveled stem 50 with in the lateral bore 17. This stem is 'ormed as an extremity upon a cone shoulder 51 carried on a head 52 from which is extended 53. the cone shoulder rests within a seat 54; formed in the wal s ot the check body adjacent which we have provided a recess tor receiving` a gasket -Bearing against the gasket and screwthreaded into the recess is a tubular nut 56 wherein is mounted a bushing 57 *having* a screw-threaded connection therewith. The inner bushing' end abuts the proximate end of the valve head 52 whereby the shoulder 51 is held against its seat. e provide means, however, foradjusting the rotary position of the valve, the same consisting ot' a crown 58 which is connected to the outer end ot the shank Manitestly the clean ance in the passage 17 will depend upon the rotative position ot' the valve which, as above indieated, may be adjusted at will. By screwing in the bushing 57, the valve will be held against any accidental displacement 'from the position to which it has once been adjusted.
A valve answering to the above description is particularly e'tl'ective in an environment oi? the kind here con'ten'plated. Because of the manner in which its cone shoulder is held tightly against its seat, there can be no escape of liquid from within the casing. Also in case ot any overhauling, the valve may be demountod by simply unscrew ing the nut 56 following which the tubular ley may also be pulled out, should this operation be desired. F or reasons such as this, the door check of our invention possesses special advantages from a manutacturing` and asscmbly standpoint.

A door check having a 'chambered body in which is a movable plunger, a key fitted between the body and plunger 'to prevent relative rotation therebetween, the key having a longitudinal passage comnmnieating with opposite ends of the chamber, cam means associated with the plunger whereby to advance the same within the ehambe'r, spring means for opposing 'such plunger movement, and a valve operatively associated with the' key passagefor controlling the flow ot' fluid therethrough, substantially as described.
4-. A door check having a chainbered body in which is mounted a plunger, a t'ubular key removably fitted between the plunger and body to prevent relative rotation therebetween, and a valve demountably associated with the body and having an Operating portion thereot disposed within the key to control the passage of 'fluid therethrough, substantially as described.
5. A door check having a chamb'ered body in which is a movable plunger, a key fitted' with opposite ends of the chamber, and&
means for securing the key against displacement comprising a valve which is .extended in part within the key passage, and a valve mounting removably fitted to the body, substantially as described' y 6. A door check having achambered body 'with a plunger movable therein, a by-pass permitting liquid to flow from one chamber end to the other past the plunger, a valve associated with the by-pass comprising a rotatable stem therewithin, a cone shoulder adjacent the stem, there being a cone seat therefor in the body wall, and means providing a mounting for the valve consisting' of a tubular nut having a screw-threaded connection with the body wall adjacent the seat, a bushing` threaded into the nut, a head on the valve adj acent the cone shoulder, and
a shank rearwardly of the head extending through thebushing, one bushing end being engaged with the. valve head to 'force the shoulder toward its seat, and means on the rear end of the shank operable for rotating the valve stem, substantially as described.
- 7. A door check having a chambered body inwhch is mo-unted aplunger, there being a by-pass through which liquid may flow past the plunger from one chamber end to the other, a val've associatedwith the bypass, including' a rotatable stem which is disposed therein, a cone shoulder adjacent the stern, means in the check body providing 'a cone seat for the shoulder, and a pair of screw elements having their threads interengaged, one of said elements having a v screw-threaded connection with the valve body in a manner to support the v'alve in position and hold the shoulder against its seat, substantially as described.
8. In a door check, the combination with spring means tending therefron to a fixed support, and means for arresting action of the spring means comprisinga fixed beveled abutment 'carried 'on one arm, a movable springpressed button engageable therewith, and a mounting for the button located to the side of the check body consisting of a collar surrounding the check and having clamping means for holding the same fixedly in a desired position of rotative adjustment thereupon, substantially as described.
9. A door check having a body within which is spring means, a pair of arms acted upon by the spring means and co'mecting the body with a fixed support, a collar slidably fitted around the body and having clamping means for' holding the same in a fixed position of adjustment thereupon, a chamberedboss carried by the collar to the side of the check body and provided at one end with an inturned shoulder, a fianged button confined partly within the boss chamof a pair of pivoted arms eX- ber, a closure plug removably fitted to the faces for alternate engagement by the button in a manner which tends to arrest action of the spring means within the check, 'sub e stantially as described.
