My invention relates to improvements in receivers for the ashes and butt-s of cigarettes and the like', and particularly to a device provided with means for extinguishing burning butts prior to delivering the same into the receiver.

The primary object of my' invention is to provide an improved cigarette ash and butt receiver.

Another object is to rovide an improvedl receiver provided wit means for extinguishing burning cigarette butts.

A further object is to provide an improved device of the character described wherein are fed between a pair of proximate rollers adapted to extinguish said butts if burning and to deliver the same into a tray.

Another object is to provide an improved device provided with strippers 'adapted to automatically strip the extinguished butt from the extinguishing means.

A further object is to provide an improved receiver adapted to facilitate the emptying and cleaning thereof.

A still further object is to provide an improved device of the character described which is simple and positive in its action and which can be economically manufac-A tured.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 general a receiver housing having an opening 2 extending 1ongitudiiially across the upper portion there- 'of and provided witha drawer 3 slidably mounted within the lower portion of the vhousin and removable through one en'd lthereo A pair ofrollers 4v and 6 are mounted in parallel proximate relation upon shafts 7 and 8 respectively, the proximate surfaces of the rollers being arranged opposite the opening 2 in the upper portion of the housing 1. The roller 4 is provided with a longitudinally disposed groove 9 arranged to receive a cigarette butt or the like, and the roller 6 is provided with a rib 11 adapted to match with the groove 9 and to move into and out of the groove in a manner hereinafter more fully explained.

An actuating lever 12 is mounted upon an outwardly extending end of the shaft 7 whereby the roller 4 may be rotated within the housing 1. Gear segments 13 and 14 are mounted in meshing relation at the ends of the rollers 4 and 6 respectively whereby the rotation of the roller 4 will cause an egualrotation of the roller 6 in the opposite direction. A spring 16 is mounted upon -tlie shaft 6 in engagement with the lever 12 to return the lever and the rollers to normal position after the rollers are rotated to deliver a cigarette butt into the receiver as hereinafter explained.

'Fhe roller 4 has a plurality of circumfer-` ential grooves or openings 17 extending partially around the roller. and arranged to receive strippers 18 secured upon the back of the housing 1 and extending forwardly into the openings 17. The ends of the grooves or openings 17 are arranged to engage the strippers 18 to limit the movement of the rollers, said strippers operating as stops limiting the movement of the rollers in both directions.

AIn operation the rollers 4 and 6 are normally held in cigarette receiving position by the spring 16 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the groove 9 and rib 11 being positioned opposite the opening 2 so that a cigarette butt may be placed within the groove immediately above the rib 11. The lever 12 is then pressed downwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. thereby partially rotating therollers to thc cigarette delivering position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. As the rollers are rotated, the cigarette butt is pressed between the rib 11 and the back of the groove 9,

and causing the butt to be carried between the rollers and delivered into the drawer the cigarette butt from the groove 9 and insure the delivery of the butt into the rcceiver drawer 3. To accomplish this the Strippers 18 are formed with curved snrfaces upon their lower and forward edges so that as the rollers are moved to the delivering position the groove 9 will be caused to pass the end of the strippers and the curved surface of said strippers to displace the butt from the groove. lVlien the lever 12 is released the levers and rollers are moved back to the normal cigarette receiving position by the spring 16.

Sufficient clearance is allowed between the roller 6 and the front of the housing 1 to permit ashes, burnt matches, and the like to drop down into the drawer 3 without operating the lever 12. Thus ashes or other substance introduced through the opening 2 in the housing onto the forward side of the roller 6 will roll off into the drawer 3 while substance dropped in back of the rib 11 will be delivered when the lever is operated.

The ashes, cigarette butts and the like are substantially enclosed within the receiver so long as the drawer remains in place, thus preventing the scattering of ashes and refuse in the vicinity of the receiver. T he drawer 3 may be readily removed from the housing for emptying and cleaning.

The device, while of general utility and adapted for use at any place where a receiver of the character described isdesired, is of particular utility and value for use in automobiles and the like. In this connection, the device may be secured in any convenient manner upon the dash or other portion of the automobile so as to be conveniently accessible to the driver and passengers. Vhen so mounted the receiver forms an efficient receptacle which will prevent the scattering of ashes and which will receive and extinguish cigarette butts in a convenient manner so that the same may be disposed of wit-hout throwing the hot ashes or burning butts out of the automobile thereby avoiding the possibility of starting fires along/the roadside.

While I have shown and described only one embodiment of my invention, the device is of course subject to modification in various ways as to form, Construction, and arrangement. I therefore do not wish to restrict myself to the specific details disclosed; but desire to avail myself of all modifications which rnay fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Leters Patent is- 1. An ash receiver for extinguishing cigarette butts comprising a pair of parallel rollers, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove to receive a cigarette butt to be extinguished and the other being provided with a projection to fit into the groove and press a cigarette butt there-in.

2. An ash receiver for extinguishing cigarette butts comprising a pair of parallel rollers, one of which is provided with a. longitudinal `groove to receive a cigarette butt to be extinguished and the other being provided with a projection to fit into the groove and press a cigarette butt therein; and means for 'actuating the rollers in unison.

3. An ash receiver for extinguishing cigarette butts comprisinga pair of parallel rollers, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove to receive a cigarette butt to be extinguished and the other being provided with a projection to fit into the. groove and press a cigarette butt therein; and means for actuating the rollers in unison; and means for partially rotating the rollers in unison to move said projection into and out of the groove of the other roller.

4. An ash receiver for extinguishing cigarette butts comprising a pair of parallel rollers, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove to receive a cigarette butt to be extinguished and the other being provided with a projection to fit into the groove and press a cigarette butt therein; and means for actuating the rollers in unison; and means for partially rotating the rollers in unison to move said projection into and out of the groove of the other roller; and means for stripping a butt from said groove after it has been pressed therein by the projection of the opposite roller.

5. An ash receiver for extinguishing cigarette butts comprising a pair of parallel rollers, one of which is provided with a longitudinal groove to receive a cigarette butt to be extinguished and the other being provided with a projection to tit i'nto the groove and press a cigarette butt therein; and means for actuating the rollers in unison; and means for partially rotating the rollers in unison to move said projection into and out of the groove of the other roller; and means for stripping a butt from said groove. after it has been pressed therein by the projection of the opposite roller; Land means for normally returning the roller to a butt receiving position.

6. An ash receiver for extinguishing cigarette butts comprising a pair of parallel rollers geared together, one of which is provided with a longitudinally disposed groove vand the other with a longitudinally disposed projection arranged to match with the groove and to move into and out of said groove when said rollers are partially rotated; means for partially rotating the rollers to move the projection into and out of the groove to press and extinguish a cigarette butt therein; means for stripping a pressed cigarette butt from said groove and also arranged as a stop to limit the movement of rotation of said rollers to a receiving and stripping position; and means for normally returning the rollers to a'receiving position.

7. An ash tray com rising a receiver; a pair of proximate rol ers mounted in connection with the receiver to receive a cigarette butt; -and means for rotating the rollers to. feed the butt therebetween and into the receiver, said rollers being adapted to extinguish the cigarette butt if burning; and i0 In Witness whereof I hereunto set my sigl5 nature.
