CALFY wnannR.
a lication med October 14., 1925. Serial Na-f 62,401.
Myinvention relates to calf weaners and more particularly to one of'fthat type adapted for engagement in"the"nostr1lsof the animal to which 'it-is applied, theprincipal' object of the invent-ionbeing' toprovide an improved latch 'mechanism" for facilitating application ofthe weaner to the animal. 7 p
In accomplishing this object I have provided improved details of structure, the pre-.
ferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a perspectiveview of a weaner.
embodying my invention and showing, the weaner in open position ready to engage an animals nose.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the weaner in latched position.
Fig.3 is a sectionalview on the line e e, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a fragmentary perspective view of the opposite side of the latch members. 1
Referring morein detail to the drawings,
12 designate ring members having extended, overlapping inner ends 3 and 1 pivoted together as at 5, and having ball shaped knobs 6 and 7 at their'outer ends for engaging in the. nostrils of an animal to which the weaner is to be applied, the members 1 and 2 beingprovided with radially extending prongs or spikes 8 and with prongs 9, the latter paired to extend vertically in front of the nostrils when the weaner is in'place.
To facilitate application of the weaner to an animal I have provided the overlapping ends 3 and 1 with automatic latching mechanism, and with limit stops for controlling the opening and closing of the ring members 1 and 2.
The latch comprises a flat spring 10 attached to the ring member 2 by the rivet 5 which pivotally connects the two ring members, and having a slightly. lip-curved central portion 11 forming a finger grip and a shank 12 at its free endbent at substantially a right angle to the flat portion of the springto provide a pintle that extends through an aperture 13 in the member 1 into an aperture 14 inthe member 2 when the parts are in latched position.
The overlap ed. end 4 of the ring member 2 is provided with an integral and out-.
tion, fso.that when the members 1 and 2 are wardly extending lip 15 for supportingthe pintle when theniembers are in open posiswungtogether to engage thenostrils of the. I animal, the'pintle '12 will slide along the :lip as the parts are closing, and when closed 1 will drop into-theaperture 1 1 of the extension'of the ring member to lock the weaner in place. 7
To effect overlapping of themembers 3 and 4.; without increasing thickness of the ring and also to form a stop shoulder to limit opening of the ring members, I undercut the end 8 of the member 1 and overcut the end 4: of the member 2, so that when the end members 3 and 4: are lapped they meet on flat faces and a shoulder 16 is formed on the member 2 to be engaged by the end of the member 1 (Fig. 1), theend of the member 3 being bevelled as at 17, so that when the ring is opened a sufficient distance to permit entrance to the nostrils the'parts will engage and prevent further opening. The outer edge of the member 4 is cut. atsuch an angleas to engage the shoulder 18 of the memberl and limit closing movement. of the ring at a point which will prevent the balls 6 and 7 from pinching the animals nose, and at which the apertures 13 and 14 of the extensions of the ring members are in registration, so that the pintle may be projected to latch the parts together.
In applying the device, the latch spring is raised to lift the pintle out of the opening shoulder 18. The pintle is then in line with the aperture, and is forced thereintounder tension of its spring, latching the members 1 and 2 in closed position When the ring is open the lip 15 holds the pintle in position for projectioninto the aperture inthe under ring projection, so that it is only necessary to locate the free ends of the rings in the animals nostrils and press them closed, the latch automatically closing to lock the members together and hold the device in place.
When the weaner is to be removed, it is' only necessary to lift the latch and spread the ring members to enable the knobbed ends to be removed from the nostrils.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A calf weaner comprising ring members having ofiset, lapped extensions, pivotally connected to permit the members to open and close, the offsets forming stop shoulders, and the ends of the extensions forming stops engageable with the shoulders to limit opening and closing movement of the members, and a latch on one of said members automatically projectible to en'- gagement with the other member to lock the members in closed relation.
2. A calf weaner comprising ring members having lapped extensions provided with latch apertures, a pivot member connecting the ring members, a flat spring at tached to one of the ring members by the pivot member, and a pintle on the spring housed in the aperture of one of said members and projectible into the aperture in the other member when the members are closed 3. A calf weaner comprising a pair 01 ring members having offset, lapped extensions provided with latch apertures, one of the extensions having a transverse lip, a pivot member connecting the ring members, a leaf spring attached to one of said members and having a pintle housed in the latch aperture of one of the members and normally supported by the lip on the other member, the pintle being automatically projectible'into the latch aperture or" such other member as the members'assume closed rela tion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
