LOCK.
Application filed: January This invention relates to improvements in loeks, one objectof the invention being to provide means operable by a thumb-turn ap plied to the inside face of a door which carries the look, so that when the thumbturn is employed to project the dead bolt, the said means will, at the same time, be set to shut-out or prevent the use of a, certain key or keys to retract the bolt from outside the door, but permit the use of another key or other keys to be operated to retract the bolt.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a lock (with the cover plate removed) showing an embodiment of my invention, the parts being in the positions which they assume when the bolt is retracted.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing positions of the parts when the bolt has been projected with the use of the thumb-turn on the inside of the door.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the lock.
Figures 1, 5 and 6 are detail views, and
Figures 7, 8 and 9 are views showing modifications.
Figures and 11 are views of keys of different lengths,'and
Figure 12 is a view showing inside key operated means in lieu of the inside thumbturn.
The casing of the lock is represented at 1 and the cover plate thereof is shown at 2. The dead bolt 3 is mounted to slide in the casing and has mounted thereon a springpressed tumbler 4. The parts are of usual construction. with the exception of the free end portion of the tumbler 4 which, in the present instance, is provided with a projection 5 for a purpose which will be hereinafter explained.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the casing is provided with an opening for the accommodation of a disk or plate 6 which is provided with radial lugs 7 to enter seats 8 in the casing adjacent to said opening and with lugs 9 to seat on the casing. The disk or plate 6=may also be notched as at 10 for the accommodation of a holding dog 11 mounted in the 29, 1925. Serial No. 5,866.
casing,--said holding dog being also operable to engage a lock cylinder 12 supported by the cover plate of the casing.
Instead of securing the removable plate or disk 6 in the casing in the manner above described, the wall of said casing may be provided with an inward projection 13 under which one of the lugs 7 may enter and the said disk may have an arm 14 to be engaged by adog 15 mounted in the casing to prevent the disk or plate from turning, as illustrated in Figure 9.
The disk or plate 6 is preferably made dish-shaped and carries a roll-back 16 which is revolubly mounted, said roll-back hav-- mg a slot 17 to receive the operating stem or bar 18 of a thumb-turn 19, the latter being adapted to be mounted at the inner side of a door. The roll-back carries rollback arms 20 for cooperation with the bolt and in order that the roll-back devices shall be retained in or returned to normal position, said roll-back devices are provided with flat faces 21 for the engagement of the arms of a spring 22, said spring being located in the dished plate or disk 6 and engaged at its central portion by a lug 23 in said dished plate or disk.
A slide 24 is mounted on the roll-back arms and provided with elongated slots 25 through which pins 26 rigid with the rollback arms pass. When the dead bolt is in its retracted position or when it has been projected by the use of a proper key (said key being operable to turn the plug of the cylinder lock and said plug being provided with a roll-back cam 27 to cooperate with the bolt in the usual manner), the slide 2% will be in the position shown in Figure 1. When the thumb-turn on the inside of the door is operated to project the bolt, the roll-back arms 20 will be moved from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in slide 2 1 will be engaged with the projection 5 on the tumbler a and be thereby moved so that when the rollback arms and slide reach the positions shown in Figure 2, a part of the slide will be so disposed as to be in line with the key slot of the lock plug and will be held in such position by the engagement of said projection 5 with the slide as shown in Figure 2. Should a long key a: be now inserted in the plug of the cylinder look, its forward end would engage the slide 24 and Figure 2 and during such movement, the
thus be prevented from being inserted far enough into the cylinder plug to permit the latter to be rotated and therefore the bolt could not be retracted with the use of such a key, but it a shorter key y be inserted into the plug so that it could fully enter the same without reaching the slide, the plug could be turned and the bolt retracted. It will be seen therefore that with my improvements certain keys may be. shutout from use to retract the bolt when the latter has been projected with the use oi the thuml turn and that other keys may be employed under such conditions to retract the bolt.
In the embodiment of the inventionshown in Figures land 2, the shut out devices operable by the inside thumb-turn are mounted on a removable disk as previously explained but if desired these devices may be mounted directly in the wall of the casing as shown in Figures 7 and 8.
If desired, a cylinder lock 19 to provide inside key operated means, may be employed in lieu of the thumb-turn as illustrated in Figure 12.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a lock, the combination with a cas ing, a bolt, outside bolt opera-ting means, and inside operating means, of bolt operating means operable by the inside operating means to project the bolt, and a part operable by the last-mentioned bolt operating means to shut out the use of a certain key or keys to retract the bolt and permit the use of another key or other keys to retract the bolt.
2. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a bolt, outside key controlled bolt'operating means, and inside bolt operating means, of means operable by the inside bolt operating means to shut out the use of a certain key or keys in the outside key controlled means and permit the use of another key or other keys in the said outside key controlled means to etfect retraction of the bolt.
3. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a dead bolt, and key operated means for operating the bolt, of means operable by an inside thumb-turn to project the bolt, and a part carried by said means and'operable to shut out the use of a certain key or keys to retract the bolt and permit the use of another key or other keys to retract the bolt.
4. In a lock, the combination with a casing, a dead bolt, a dead bolt tumbler, key operated means, and thumb-turn operated means, of a slide mounted on said thumbturn operated means, and a part on the dead bolt tumbler to engage said slide and more the same so that a part thereof will become disposed in line with the key slot of the key operated means.
orin-a lock, the combination with a casing, a dead bolt, a dead bolt tumbler, and key operated means for operating the bolt, oit roll-back arms supported by the casing and adapted for operation by an inside thumb-turn, a slotted member mounted on said arms, pins connecting said slotted memher with said arms, and a projection on the dead bolt tumbler to engage said member and move it so as to dispose a part thereof in line with the key slot of the key operated means when said arms are operated by a thumb-turn to project the bolt.
6. In a lock, the combination with a carin a dead bolt, a dead bolt tumbler, and
key operated means for operating the bolt,
of a disk removably secured to the casing, a roll-back mounted in said disk, rollback arms carried by said roll-back, spring means for holding said roll-back and its arms in normal position, a slide mounted on and carried by the roll-back arms, thumb-turn means for operating saidroll-back, and a projection on the dead bolt tumbler to engage said slide and move the same so that a portion thereof will be disposed in' alignment with th key slot of the key operated means when said roll-back is operated by a thumb-turn to project the bolt.
7. In a lock, the combination with a cas ing, dead bolt, a dead bolt tumbler, and key operated means for operating the bolt, of a disk removably secured to the casing, means for preventing lateral and rotary displacement of said disk, aroll-hac'k mounted in said disl roll-back arms carried by said roll-back, spring means for holding said roll-back and its arms in normal position, a slide mounted on ililfl carried by the rollback arms, thumb-turn means for operating said roll-back, and a projection on the. dead bolt tumbler to engage said slide and more the same so that a portion thereof will be disposed in alignment with the key slot of the key operated means when said roll-back is operated by a thumb-turn to project the bolt.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
