Application filed Deccmh er My present invention relates to a manner of mounting the gearing employed in connection with a railway car brake, and it has particular reference to the structure that is adapted to support the gear and its housing in a dependable manner without havin to alter the construction and disposition of the component elements of the underframe of the ear.
Frequently in underframes the end-sill of angular section is positioned with a. flange extending outwardly and when it is required to place the operating mast of the brake outside the plane of the end-wall oi the car the overhang of the gear housing is such that a poor installation would be made unless the structure were suitably braced. I successfully overcome this by providing a diagonal or oblique strut that connects longitudinal and transverse members of the underframe and T secure the housing to the end-sill by means of a specially designed top-casting and position said casting so that it extends back of the sill to the brace and is secured thereto.
I prefer to carry out my invention and to accomplish the objects thereof in substantially the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan of a portion of the end of a car-underframe showing my improvements applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the endsill and the gear housing, the end-sill being broken away to disclose the center-sill and connected parts.
Figure 3, is a longitudinal side elevation of the gear housing with the end-sill in transverse section.
The drawings, which are schematic, illustrate a typical or preferred embodiment of mv invention and I have employed the same reference characters to designate like parts wherever they appear throughout the several views.
The housing for the gears consists of a bottom casting 5 having upstanding side flanges 6 that are secured to the depending side flanges 7 of the top casting 8 and the gears are preferably journaled between the to 3 and bottom castings.

frame is represented as having acomposite or built-up center-sill 9, upon which there is a lateral horizontally projecting top flange 10, and at the end of the underframe there is an end-sill 11, of channel section which is so mounted that its flanges project outwardly from the under-frame. The top flange 10 of the center-sill is in a horizontal plane intermediate the plane of the flanges of end-sill 11.
The top casting of the gear housing is preferably secured to the bottom flange of the end-sill and extends upon both sides of said sill, so that the operating mast 12 will be suitably spaced outside the wall of the car. The top casting is provided with an abutment having a vertical member 18 that is fitted against and is secured to the front face-of the web of the end-sill and said abutnient member 13 is braced by tapered ribs 14 that extend from said member around the bottom flange of the sill to the upper surface of the top plate or casting of the gear housing. In order to support and brace the inwardly extending portion of the top casting 8, there is provided an oblique brace in the form of an elongated plate 15 that extends diagonally from the end-sill to the center-sill adjacent the corner formed by the juncture of the sills. This plate, at its outor end, is provided with an upturned flange 16, that rests against the inner face of the end-sill and is riveted or otherwise secured thereto, while at its opposite end the plate is provided with an upwardly disposed eX- tension of substantially L-shape the horizontal portion 17 of which rests upon the top flange 10 of the center-sill and is secured thereto. This arrangement disposes the underneath surface of plate 15 in the same horizontal plane as the underneath surface of the bottom flange of the end-sill, so that when the top 8 of the top masting is placed in position upon the end-sill its inner portion will be disposed flat against the plate 15 to which it is secured by the rivet 18. This arrangement provided a very dependable mounting for the brake gear housing so that when a longitudinal pull is exerted by the brake mechanism the accidental displacement or tilting of the housing is effectively prevented.
What I claim is 1. Means for mounting a brake gear comprising a car end-sill a sill connected to and extending transversely thereto, a Z-shaped member extending between said sills adjacent the juncture thereof, one end of said member secured to the second-mentioned sill and a horizontal portion of said member disposed in the plane of the lower flange of the end-sill, a vertical element secured to the end-sill for connecting said horizontal portion thereto, and a gear housing including a top member disposed against the underneath surface of the bottom flange of said end-sill and the horizontal portion of said means and secured thereto.
2. Means for mounting a brake gear comprising a car end-sill, a sill connected to and extending transversely thereto, a plate having lateral flanges at its opposite ends that are secured to vertical portions of said sills whereby to connect the latter adjacent their juncture with each other, said plate disposed in a horizontal plane and extended from sill to sill in an oblique direction, and a gear housing including a top member extending upon both sides or" the end-sill and secured to a flange thereoi, the inner portion of said top member extended to an intermediate portion of said plate and secured thereto.
3. Means for mounting a brake gear comprising a car end-sill of channel section with its web vertical, a longitudinal sill extended transverse to said sill and having a lateral flange, a plate disposed oblique to said sills, said plate having a lateral flange at one end secured to the web of the end sill and having an L-shaped flange at its opposite end secured to the flange of the longitudinal sill, and a gear housing a portion of which is secured to one of the flanges of said end-sill and the inner portion of which is secured to said plate.
4:. Means for mounting a brake gear comprising a car end-sill of channel section with its Web vertical, a longitudinal sill extended transverse to said end sill and having a lateral flange, a plate disposed oblique to said sills, said plate having a lateral flange at one end secured to the web of the end sill and having an L-shaped flange at its opposite end secured to the flange of the longitudinal sill, the lower surface of said plate being in the same plane with the underneath face oi the bottom flange of the end-sill, and a gear housing having a top member that extends upon opposite sides of the vertical plane of the end-sill web and is secured to the bottom flange of said end sill and to an intermediate portion of said plate.
5. Means for mounting a brake gear comprising a car end-sill extending transversely thereto and disposed longitudinally of the car, means extending from sill to sill the inner end portion of which is Z-shaped, one of the members of which is connected to the second before mentioned sill, a lateral member at the opposite end of said means connected to the end-sill, and a gear housing a portion of which is connected to said end-sill and extends to said means and is connected thereto.
6. Means for mounting a brake gear comprising a car end-sill, a sill extending transverse thereto and disposed longitudinally of the car, means extending from sill to sill the inner end portion of which is substantially Z-shaped a horizontal member of which is engaged with and secured to the top of said longitudinal sill, the opposite end of said means having an upstanding member connected to said end-sill, and a gear housing a portion of which is secured to said endsill and extends beyond the same to said means and is secured thereto.
