Description

cnARLRs W. KINNR, oF coRrLAND, NRW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BODIES..
Specicaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,825, dated February 16, 1875; application led August 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. KINNE, of Cortland, county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented an Improved Wagon- Body, of which the following is a specification:
rIhis invention relates to that class of Wagonbodies having perpendicular or slightly-darin g sides and rounded corners 5 and the object is to make the bodies without joints at or near the corners, the pieces forming the sides and end sbeing so bent as to form the corners, also.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view ot' the body, and Fig. 2 represents a section of the body when looking directly down upon it.
A A and B B are pieces forming the entire sides and ends ofthe body, bent at the corners in the direction of the grain ot' the wood, and joined by lapping the ends at h h in front and rear. E F is the bottom frame of the body. D D is the seat-rail, but carried completely around upon the inside of the body, and bent at the corners correspondingly with the side pieces, but the joints in the rail made at different points from those of the sides.v This rail is supported by ribs or standards resting on the bottom frame. The joints in the sides and rail should be at one of these standards, that the laps may be bolted or screwed thereto, and so strengthened. These joints may be upon the sides instead of the ends, but I prefer them upon the ends.
Vhen a tail-board is made in the body there will, of course, be no joint in the rear of the body, the side pieces and rail stopping at suitable standards at each end of the opening.
I thus make a body-corner which is light and cheap, and cannot fall apart.
I do not claim making a bent corner for a wagon-body, as bent corners have been made by inserting a piece the grain of which runs transverse to the grain of the wood in the sides and ends of the box; but
I do claim- The combination of the bent piece A A B B and the correspondingly-bent rail D, forining the sides and ends of a wagon-bodypsubstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof` I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES WV. KINNE.
