'UNTITED STATES PATE FFHCE- GU'NARD 'O. CARLSON, OF EAS'I'ON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM WHAR-,
TON, JR. & COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORA- TION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
' Application filed February 27, 1926. Serial No. 91,167.
My invention relates to metal containers mainly intended for the transport and storage or ammonia and other gases. .Heretofore it has been usual to form ammonia cylinders of lap-welded tubing with separate heads welded to place. Welded cylinders are objectionable for a number of reasons aside from the high cost of production.
The nature of my invention consists in forming the cylinder and its heads as a unit constructed of seamless drawn metal, the heads being guarded by end flanges or skirts which are symmetrically inturned or convexed. In achieving this result I may'start with'a billet or with a section of seamless drawn tubing.
In the accompanying drawings;-
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic illustration'of the relationship of the parts in the initial operation of piercing when starting with a billet t 3 Fig. 2 is-a sectional view of the product Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the elongated by drawing, V
Fig. 4 illustrates the product after the operation of swaging or necking,
Fig. 5 illustrates the product after conv tinned swaging operation on the necked end to provide the end flange or skirt, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the finished product According to my invention, the billet 5 is pierced andextruded to form the cup-shape member 6, asin Fig. 2. It is then elongated by a drawing operation to substantially the form of Fig. 3, in which form the closed end 7 is in its finished state except for the convexing of the flange. The openend of or flaredjby swaging, to impart the general dome-shape, indicated at 12 in F ig.'6. The converging or flaring end walls not only serve to protectthe heads of the cylintier but afford a purchase for grappling hoo s.
Having described my invention, I claim z- 1. The method of forming cylindrical con tainers, which consists in providing a cylindrical blank having a flanged closed end, swaging the other end to close it and toform a re-entrant portion having a neck, and im- "parting an inward flare to both end flanges. product 2. The method of forming cylindrical containers, which consistsin providing a seamless drawn cylindrical blank having a flanged closedend, swaging the other end of the blank to form a corresponding flanged closure having a central boss, and boring and tapping the boss. .2."
3. The method of forming cylindrical containers, which consists in providing a cylindrical blank having a flanged closed end, swaging the other end of the blank to form a flanged neck, and swagingboth sets of flanges to give them a dome-shape or inwardly directed flare.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. GUNARD O. CARLSON.
