Description
Aug 31 9 19261 G. B. BARTLETT INSIDE AWNING ADJUSTER Filed Jan. 26, 1926 Patented Aug. 31, 192 6.
UNITEQ STATES GEORGE IB. BARTLETT, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
INSIDE AWNING ADJ USTER,
Application filed January as, 1926. Serial no. 33,929.
The object of my invention is to provide a device adapted for clamping or attaching to window screens or to window sills or to any suitable part of a building to operate awnings from the inside of the screen or from the inside of the building where the device is attached and to provide an opening through which a cord may travel to operate the awning from within the building; to provide a device especially adapted for conveniently raising or lowerlng an awning in tall buildings or where it would be dangerous for a person to lean out of the window to operate the awning. I attain these and other objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front plan View of my in vention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. l and showing the invention in top plan; and
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-8 of Fig. 1 showing the invention in side elevation.
Like characters of reference indicate like 3 parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I provide a suitable outside clamp plate 9, preferably bent at right angles at its bottom portion to readily engage the screen frame or in any other suitable manner to engage a window sill or any suitable part of a building and I also provide an oppositely positioned inside clamp plate 1 having a U- shaped portion 2 of suitable size to lit over the window frame 3 to which both clamps are affixed by suitable means. I further provide a cleat hook or other cord fastening device 10 affixed to the upper portion of the inside clamp plate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Screen 11 and the plates 9 and 1, which are oppositely positioned, are provided with alined slots 4 forthe passage of the cord or cords 5 by means of which the awning is raised or lowered. It is within the contemplation of my invention to provide a similar or corresponding slot in the window sill or any other part of the building through which the awning cord 5 may pass to permit of operating the awning from within the building, the cord being passed over pulleys similar to pulleys 7 of any suitable or preferred size, the pulleys be ing mounted on a suitable bracket such as bracket 6. I may provide one or more cords 5 which ride on the pulley or pulleys 7 which are mounted in a housing r bracket 6 affixed in some suitable manner, as by bolts 8, to the plates 9 and 1. The cord or cords lead to an awning pulley above (not shown in the drawings) and by pulling on the cord or cords the awning may be raised and the cord or cords readily clamped around the cleat hook 10 to prevent the awning from being lowered until desired. Cleat hook 10 may be made of any suitable size.
It is within the contemplation of my invention to use a clutch pulley attached to the inside plate 1 in a position corresponding to and in place of the cleat hook 10 and for the purposes of this invention said construction is considered equivalent to the cleat hook 10. With the clutch pulley a single cord will be used and the cord may be pulled to either right or left to frictionally engage the cord and hold the cord stationary and thus hold the awning at the desired position.
The pulley housing or bracket 6 may be used separately or unattached to the plate 9 whereby the device may be attached to any frame or material at any place where its use is desired for the purpose of raising or lowering the awning, permitting of in side adjustment'of the awning which is a distinct convenience over the old pulley which is in use today.
What I claim is:
1. An inside awning adjuster, comprising a pair of plates fastened to a suitable portion of a building element such as a screen frame, a pulley housing mounted on the outside plate, a pulley in said housing, a cord operatively connected with the awning and running over the aforesaid pulley, each of the plates and the screen having alined slots for the cord to pass through to the inside of the screen, and means ailixed to the inside plate for firmly securing the cord in adjusted position.
2. An inside awning adjuster, comprising a pair of plates fastened to a suitable portion of the building such as a window sill, a pulley housing mounted on the outside plate, a pulley in said housing, a cord operatively connected with the awning and running over the aforesaid pulley, each of the plates and the screen having alined slots for the cord to pass through to the inside of the screen.
GEORGE B. BARTLETT.
